When that man said "I hope the foreigners who come here don't take advantage of women in need" it crushed me.
@misubi
I'm fascinated how they mix 50% english and 50% tagalog like it's 100% one language.

As the cost of living continues to rise in the west, places like Thailad, Vietnam, and the Philippines, are becoming more known for places to migrate to for retirement.

As someone who doesn't want to go there for sex tourism, it makes me feel awkward if people think I am. It's such a beautiful country with alot of culture to explore, i'd really like to go someday.

13:22 "If there is no poverty, no one would work for sex". Truer words were never spoken. Hoping the government or even just fellow filipinos will correct this injustice to our people especially our women. They deserve better.
@somerandomfella
No different to Thailand. The big problem though is the sick men going there for minors and worst of all some parents willingly selling them.
@OfficialF3d
Nice to have this kind of video since the Department of Health declared a state of emergency for the rising number of HIV cases at an alarming rate.
@MrHereugo
It's has been a famous sex tourism location for decades. My old co-workers (white male) in Melbourne Australia used to brag about going there every few years for this reason.
@jasatx2024
Hispanic here. My best friends here in the states are Filipino. When I think about the Philippines, I simply relates my experiences with great friendship, tasty food, beautiful beaches, very affordable and welcoming country for tourism. Pretty sad that the gov there doesn't acknowledge this issue.
@sarailustre8131
The common reasons is poverty and lack of opportunities to find job in our country and also the mindset of Filipino women to earn the easy way. I blame the parents to be part of the reasons using their child to support the family is wrong and immoral. Those parents should be in jail for allowing this kind of thing.
@downtomars6268
Asked how the Philippines got started and became dependent on sex tourism and the response: "American military bases introduced a culture of foreign soldiers seeking local companionship, sometimes transactional. The presence of large U.S. naval and air bases created demand for bars, clubs, and brothels catering to servicemen. Olongapo and Angeles City became hubs."
@Chawaniii
Just look at westerners expat YouTubers in Thailand. Their video content is mainly focus on women. Bar girls, interview of western owning a bar, shady business. recommendation on which streets, provinces , women are the easiest to get. tutorials on which applications to use , price range for local girls. ranking and categorizing women like they are animals. Isan girl, central Thai, northeast etc.
@GetOutsideYourself
Thank you for finally posting this. It's a needed perspective on this not-so-simple issue.
@alanguages
I knew Thailand and the Philippines were known for it in South East Asia.
Edit: Just like both countries are known for their heavy traffic.
@rolandmueller7218
Many foreign men, and women, come to the Philippines for completely different reasons than sex tourism.
To find a place to live that costs them less.
To find a filipino spouse.
To tour the cultures, islands, mountains, and beaches.
@christineruste
Thank you for featuring this topic. It is very confronting but also rampant. A lot of prostution, paedophilia, and sex and human trafficking is happening yet people turn a blind eye to them due to poverty, lack of opportunities, and lack of laws that protect people from the sex industry. For most Filipinos, the sex industry is an "easy" way to get ahead: to provide for daily needs, to get ahead among peers, and to keep up with the Joneses. For those who are in absolute poverty, this is their only recourse as they have no educational nor job opportunities available to them. To others who want to get ahead, prostituting themselves is a way of affording a better education or to fund a holiday or the latest accessories. The fact that prostitution is illegal does not provide any protections for these women, men, and children.
Educating people about the law, their options, and giving people more opportunities for education and jobs will most likely help them steer away from this path. The Philippine government should do better to protect its people.
@AaronOlafson
This is a cool documentary. Although it doesn't go into great detail of how the industry operates, it's interesting to get the local's perspective on it. I'm out of Vegas and we have the same reputation and reason why so many tourists flood the city on weekends.
@Pinay010.
As a Filipina but born in Europe, i always felt ashamed and annoyed about this. But as a i grew older, I also understand the reality of it and what it made it come to this point. Hoping the country will keep developing so it can be known for all the amazing other things it has to offer.
@saulspanco854
I think of Thailand and Holland personally. Although there are places all over the world such as Germany and Japan that also have these places, but the girls are trafficked from poor countries. It is low and demeaning whether it is legal or not.
@rafaelm3523
girl in white with a van cleef necklace is a representation on how ignorant/disconnected rich people is to the society. saying "its not that common and only when she's in a specific area" means she hasn't seen the real issue
@kikaykimy
Blame it on poverty. Desperate times, calls for desperate measures. And who's to blame for poverty? We all know the answer to that. We would've been one of the richest countries in the world, if only we're not plagued by corruption.
@andri7589
Many single mothers in the Philippines have Korean babies. In many cases, the Korean men lied to them, and after the women got pregnant, the men returned to Korea.
@ExploreEstate
I feel so bad for Filipinos they truly are some of the most hospitable people in the world, and they deserve an economy that protects them from being associated with images like this.
@biancafelton6087
to be honest ive never known this to be true until ive read an article bout this like child trafickers etc and prostitution rings disguises a golf tours orchestrated by koreans as said in articles ive read.
I like all the answers given bu the interviewwees. They are all articulate and their answers have depth. Which area did you go around to ask?
@bieragaino440
Wow, I never thought of that. have worked with Filipinos , been in Philippines many times.
Surprising because I thought it was known for gorgeous nature, beaches...
@SalvadorSupremacy
I don't know if I'm privileged, ignorant or both cause I don't know something like this is going on in my dear country Philippines. I thought Philippines is famous for its beaches, natural wonders, and hospitality.
Wa man koy nadunggan nga ingani aris amo. Maong makaguol kaajo paminawn nga naa diay ingani.
@MeanAndy
What many people don’t seem to realise is that it works both ways. I (white male) visited the Philippines a few years ago for the food, culture and natural beauty as a normal tourist to visit a friend. I was constantly being approached and propositioned, to a point where I was just wanted to leave.
@beeniewithabeard
I'm an American who loves and appreciates other cultures. This is a great topic and about time was mentioned. I know if say my home town was full of bloggers walking around filming everything and especially if our women turned to freelancing and it was like the Philippines I would be enraged. Life is hard everywhere even here in the US. By the women doing this it shames the country the culture the people and especially the men. If you see the difference responses you get from the older generation and younger generation. To the point it's corrupting the generations. I don't know just upsets me to see. I personally blame the men.
@Rusty_Hill
Allow for some exceptions that not all tourists are here for such things. I'm old and white, but I'm here for the beauty, the low cost of living and the experience of living among such a great culture. I love it here. I don't pass judgement on others from my country, but I don't like being put in the same category just because i look like them. That said, I don't let it bother me either. Poverty is something we should all be aware of and try to improve wherever we lay our heads. Thank you for the insight to local thinking.
@BradGrayable
I'm middle aged and my wife is from the Philippines. When we first met, started dating, and on my visits there... there are some places where some of these street walker/bar types don't care at all even if you have a wife/gf. They will yell(advertise themselves) or try to put their arm around you(Sometimes multiple of them).
I'm not sure where the blame should be because I'm sure after a few old gross men encourage that behavior it ends up being learned, becoming a habit for money, and continuing.
@Razear
This is a phenomenon that's fairly common across SE Asia. When you have women who are destitute and see an opportunity to rake in a quick payday, you can't really blame them for being tempted when they could be making enough in one encounter to sustain themselves for weeks or even months. That's just the sad reality of contending with poverty. Another aspect is probably the hope of getting a green card so that they could leave their predicament for a better life.
In a just world, any parent using their children as a vehicle to make money should be imprisoned. The Philippines needs to impose harsher legislation to crack down on this stuff.
If a woman wants to engage in it as a consenting adult, that's one thing. But it's a totally separate conversation when it involves minors and those who do it out of sheer economic desperation.
The merits of this (or a lack thereof) shouldn't be judged purely on financial grounds. What good is the money if it erodes the social fabric and stains the country's image on the world stage?
@twilightincosmos
I had a Filipino friend in the past...we worked together on a project in an IT field though we lived in separate countries..but the bond that we formed was so beautiful...she was my first friend from a foreign land and she was lovely human being and a wonderful friend.... though we have drifted aparted...life happens ..but the memories will be cherished forever..and it's true Filipinos are hardworking , talented and very friendly...bless them
@Livestream9_9
It adds up to the increase of American military bases in the Philippines, I witness some area where many young women took part in prostitution for money of this foreigner (mostly americans), it happens in beach resorts it's so alarming that as a tourist(from mindanao) myself witness it.
@BlueLanternH
Meh. The Philippines has been a modern destination for sex tourism for decades. Angeles City had the US' Clark Air Force base as a major hub since World War 2. It literally has the reputation of being the "Sin City" of the Philippines. There's also red light districts located in Makati in Manila or Mango Ave in Cebu City. That being said, it's no different than other countries that are sex tourist destinations like Thailand, Vietnam, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, etc. I'd love to see similar Asian Boss interviews in some of those other countries.
Rather than policing what adults decide to do behind closed doors, IMHO the Philippines has more serious issues like predators targeting minors, the lack of divorce in the Philippines, and the lack of education in general and more specifically sex education which has lead to rising rates of HIV/AIDS.
