Three years ago, Sri Lanka teetered on the edge of economic collapse. Three years on, the country appears to be on the road to recovery. Though the island nation still has many obstacles ahead, one bright spot is the revival of its tourism industry. Tourism has been a key source of foreign currency, and a way for the government to show that Sri Lanka is stable, investment-friendly destination. It hopes to attract 3 million visitors this year, an increase of about 30% from 2024 numbers.
Is it a sustainable pathway out of its economic doldrums? And, while most locals welcome the opportunities that tourism brings, in some pockets, friction with foreigners has left Sri Lankans feeling unwelcomed in their own homes.

I'm Asian American from NYC and Sri Lanka is my #1 favorite vacation spot in the world. I go to Mirissa beach every year and eat at my favorite restaurants in Colombo. From Palmyrah to Ministry of Crab, Sri Lanka has my favorite food in the world (tied with Trini). They made Indian curries much lighter, with delicious coconut pol sambol, egg hoppers etc. Plus it's not teeming with tourists like in Thailand, Bali, Vietnam, Japan etc. It still feels undiscovered. I know it's greedy to want to keep it to myself, but I'm sure eventually the world will discover it.

Sri Lanka MUST HAVE the Department of Motor Vehicles LOCATED in the AIRPORT for tourists to get their licence converted in order to rent a vehicle on arrival. It must operate 24/7 with helpful brochures and friendly staff bringing in the revenue, but most importantly giving the tourists a quick and easy experience right on arrival.

Tourism is alright in the short term, but it isn't something you can rely on for sustainable revenue generation given the volatility as discussed in the video. Hi-tech manufacturing is what will provide a steady income stream over time. To attract investment for this, SL needs strong institutions to safeguard investors and reduce red tape.

As much as I like being a tourist myself, I would love for any country to not depend too much on tourism. Tourism can be boom or bust. Sri Lanka should invest heavily in science. Instead of kids wanting to do diplomas in tourism or hotel management, they should be encouraged to take up basic elemental subjects such as physics and chemistry. With subjects such as physics, any country can advance into sectors of immense importance such as manufacturing components for aerospace or medical electronics etc. This is the path that countries like India and Vietnam are taking, which is helping them with scalable innovation.

Tourism in Sri Lanka needs to be completely restructured. Better facilities at cultural sites, such as bathrooms, adequate roads, signage, information sites, trash clean up. Getting rid of illegal vendors who harass and scam tourists to buy mass-produced souvenirs. Emphasizing a cultural approach by showcasing temples, traditions, rituals, history to highlight Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage to make the island a cultural destination like Thailand and Bali. And also by rerouting the mainstream route to also hit places like Maskeliya, Hatton, and Sinharaja, which are so beautiful but unknown by tourists. They should also improve the country’s infrastructure and beautify the coastline by doing a massive trash pick-up campaign and prohibiting such activities which contribute to pollution.

Sri Lanka was the second richest country in Asia, only second to Japan, when the British left the island. It’s a pity what the successive governments have done to the country, in terms of policies as it was meant to be an open economy like Singapore. The government should reform its economic policies so that trading can take place and uplift then services industry.

sri lanka has a very strong education, healthcare system and been a importer of talents, it is important to diversify the economy. tourism alone is not the healthiest option to sustain economic growth.

After seven years, I am visiting my home country. Locals still struggle with day-to-day living with the high expenses. The Sri Lankan government and the world know that Sri Lanka depends on tourism as a major contributor to the economy and infrastructure of Sri Lanka. But my suggestion is that the Sri Lankan government should build luxury apartments around Sri Lanka for tourists to come and stay in a standard, secure, peaceful environment. Local government should monitor and regulate reasonable accommodation payments for tourists' stay. This way, the Sri Lankan government can attract more tourists to the nation.

Tourism is a hidden danger: fickle, unreliable, corrupting society, no permanent benefit to the people, no improvement of valuable skills, trains our people to flee abroad without making the effort to develop our own motherland! We must not become overly reliant on tourism. Everything must be done in moderation with balance and good judgment on the long term impact on the nation!

Sri Lanka has amazing natural landscapes, but when you’re constantly surrounded by dishonest scammers trying to take advantage of tourists, it leaves you feeling very uncomfortable.

Tourism is a great solution, as long as its sustainable! We have very little respect for our natural resources as we love showing them off to people outside of Sri Lanka. Unfortunately, politicians seem to think it's the (easy) answer to economic prosperity because of its high ROI. But, tourism is temperamental, as we saw in the past. So, hopefully, we will look towards self-sustaining means to develop the country without continuing to brag about tourist numbers as if it's the only way towards everlasting economic prosperity.

Tourism shouldn't be the focus and it's just pocket money and fragile income. Better to attract more FDIs. I am Sri Lankan and I don’t want my country to go down the wrong path. The current government is messing up with their priorities.

Balance of economies is the key without relying too much on tourism instead many consumer products are of international standards and should earn export revenue! This is where it will warm steady export revenue and fix the trade balance. I had pointed out from Ranil’s time to the current Prez Anura and PM Harini on sm platforms; as I walk into the grocery stores on past visits, see so many products worthy of export! Ex: biscuits chocolates, juices coconut tea (already on top) coffee spices I am sure some do! For garments it is a hub, mainly to the U.S.! (ex garment trader) Not sure how that is affecting with tariffs but still so many crafts and arts to be explored. Also, farming should be given priority to self suffice and bring prices down as find the groceries unless bought at farmers markets were on the rise.
The electricity billing is outrageous!
 
经济平衡是关键，不能过度依赖旅游业。斯里兰卡的许多消费品已经达到国际标准，应该创造出口收入！这才是获得稳定的出口收入、改善贸易平衡的途径。从拉尼尔时期到现在的阿努拉总统和哈里尼总理，我都在社交媒体上指出：每次走进杂货店，我都能看到许多值得出口的产品！比如饼干、巧克力、果汁、椰子茶（已经是顶级产品）、咖啡、香料，我相信有些已经在出口了！斯里兰卡也是一个服装业中心，主要出口美国！（前服装贸易商）不确定关税的影响如何，但还有很多手工艺品和艺术品可以开发。此外，应该优先发展农业以实现自给自足并降低食物的价格，因为我发现除非在农贸市场购买，否则杂货的价格一直在上涨。

Sri Lankan government has no any intention to improve tourism. The tourism board and the minister has no idea the meaning of tourism. No any plan towards tourists. We do have plenty of natural assets that we can earn billions dollars. This remarkable country has plenty of places can build the economy stronger. To build good tourism in the country the main responsibility is in the government hand. I do believe people in the tourism board and the minster never visited any country as a tourist get real torsim plan that other country providing. as a Sri lankan that I visited 30 countries in the world, but I did not see any basic tourism plan being existing in Sri Lanka. Our tourism still exist manly of sri lankans hospitality. Other than that no upgrade plan or any attempt to upgrade plan came out tonthe table so far.

Sri Lanka does not have the infrastructure to become a manufacturing economy like Korea. So Its economy should be geared to cater for the service sector not just tourism but education care gibing medical treatment etc. because we have a large educated population in such fields.

A country thats very beautiful with a very dark past. I visited the country a few months ago. Although it is beautiful in the south. It is just as beautiful in the north. I have witnessed on a few occasion some unfortunate incidences and stories local by the people in the north. The tamils continue to face undue hardship. It is sad that nothing is done and I hope this new government takes a holistic approach and is truly united as one country with many races. Please fix your internal issues and not mask them with such tourist tactics. Many people go visit Sri Lanka but not truly see for what it really is.

Along with so many positives of tourism sector, the government shall really look into safe guarding female travellers and solo travellers. There should be strong punishment for misbehaving with women in public and taking advantage of the modesty of women.
There should be a way for the tourists to stay away from street scams, Tuk tuk scams, know what to pay and keep themselves protected.

Sri Lanka has the same sets of problems as Grenada it's just on a larger scale. Tourism has its benefits and it has some disadvantages, as with many things in this life there is a ceiling, a stage where growth will halt.

A lot of people from India are skipping local spots like Goa and heading to Sri Lanka which offers a much conducive tourism environment as against Goa with hostile locals, High taxes, and government who doesn't want Indian tourists.

Sri Lanka is a prime candidate for green energy projects. Imagine the country running on renewable energy. Solar, EVs.... They can start with solar panels/new tech nuclear power, then manufacturing electric rickshaws, busses, scooters and finally cars.

Mistake of Asian countries- running after luxuries for reach tourists and ignore other tourists . Thailand did it already , prices rises and 2025 tourism drops significantly. High profit from a few thousands reach tourists absolutely can’t cover profit from millions of other tourists. They are going to Cambodia, Vietnam and … so far Sri Lanka.
