You know that there are two types of dogs. One is a street dog that keeps running non-stop and the other is an Alsatian well-bred dog that watches the house stealthily.
Our unfocussed mind is always on the move like a street dog embracing one thought after the other non-stop. An ability to focus is to have one ‘thought-process’ which means one thought continuing until its execution.
Let us take the example of a tiger. We can observe the way it focusses before it charges after its prey. What it does before it attacks its prey is a typical example of ‘focus’! It watches the prey by holding its breath, stealthily positioning itself solely fixing its eyesight and hearing on the prey. It will have only one thought at that time that is of prey, its movement, its ability to run and plan to catch it in its spirited sprint.
How does a tiger get this focus?
It has no other thought at that moment except its prey. This focus has come to it because it is hungry and if it loses this chance it does not know when the next opportunity is going to be open for it.

Motivation behind focus
We have a built-in motivation centre in the limbic lobe. It is also called a reward centre. Have you observed dolphins in the water wold? The trainer always tosses in a fish as soon as the dolphin completes its feat. As soon as the fish is tossed into its mouth, dopamine is released in its reward centre called ‘Nucleus accumbens’. A sudden spurt of this chemical will activate a series of connections which motivate the dolphin to take up another task with zeal.
Extrapolating this to a human being, it is very essential to positively motivate youngsters to successfully undertake the job that stimulates the inner fire of triumph and success. It becomes the focus the mind. Focussing the mind means activating that particular set of connections in the brain synchronizing with grit and determination to achieve the set aim.
First let us see, what is this focus?
One thought and resolve to complete it successfully is indeed the focus.
For the focus, as I described above, motivation is necessary.
To have a strong motivation, one must have actually experienced the pain of the absence of that obxt or condition. I gave the examples of hunger motivating the tiger and poverty motivating a boy to become rich.
Hunger, poverty and social discrimination are the natural stimuli of ‘proper focus’. Motivation is not a routine habit but a burning desire to achieve something as the pain of not having it is too much to bear. Take the example of freedom fighters of India. They were oppressed by a foreign rule. They had suffered too much. They wanted to get out of that situation at any cost. The oppression was motivation. They went to jails and they suffered too much. Many of them sacrificed their lives in the process. They had the right cause which motivated them.
Modern youth are so abnormally waylaid that they don’t even care their nation which got independence after so much of sacrifice. It is because the sense of reality is buried under the debris of the obxtive ocean. Corruption has become so rampant because our focus on permanence is replaced by temporary pleasures. No corrupt person is permanently happy.
Becoming corrupt has become a habit. Buying something on loan is a habit.

Anything repeated good or bad becomes a habit.
Media is playing with our brain connections
The brain has got certain special features. One of them strangely is the belief in that which is repeatedly presented to it. Even if it is detrimental to his interest, it does not matter. It believes in that which is presented to it endlessly. That is what our media is doing now in India. They are spreading the unreal facts such as India is no longer secular. The whole world has started believing it. I can bet you that there is no other religion in the universe which is as democratic as Hinduism. If you want to go to the temple, you can go and if you don’t want, that is fine. It has material for every person of every walk of life. There are religions which convert Hindus into their religions. Hindus simply don’t bother because their religion has told them to see God in every being. Other religions want Hindus to remain ignorant and docile until all Hindus are converted. A small assertion from Hindus that we also want to exist like others has caused all this hue and cry. It is not their fault. It is the habit that is ingrained in their brains by their religions. Be sure, let it be anything, if we repeat it, it is encoded as a habit in the brain. (I will agree that there are some social discrepancies in Hinduism due to the caste system. This is because of the brain synaptic plasticity of habit enforced on simple people by some petty selfish individuals who thought themselves to be intelligent) We have to fight it out but not dubbing the Hindu religion as intolerant. The word tolerance will disappear if Hinduism were to take a back seat. This is the only religion and the other one is Buddhism which do not convert others into their religions. They are the most human-loving religions. The humanity comes under the dominations of false beliefs from time to time which is ingrained as a habit in the races.
Habit is due to the connections of neurons coming together by the constant repetition of the same act. It is something like walking in the woods. Keep walking in the same path, a footpath is formed and later you will never leave that path and never dare to walk through bushes again. The formation of such paths among the neurons of our brain is the mechanism of habit formation.
Same thoughts which are repeated become our desires ( because of strengthened neuronal connections in the brain). These desires become our actions. Repeated actions become our habits. (Habits are very strong connections developed in our brain and it becomes almost impossible to beat the habits.
We are habituating ourselves to material possession and temporary repeatable pleasures. This has taken away our focus. Even as one thought process stops the other one is ready to take over. it is said that about 62000 thoughts appear in our mind. How can we focus on 62000 things in a day? It has robbed our focus.
Democracy which is such a beautiful evolution in human life has led every citizen to a life of circuitous intrusive thoughts and not thoughts of higher aspiration.
To have a focus, we should have a burning desire to achieve the aimed destination. That destination should be permanent. If the aim is to enjoy the temporary physical pleasures, the focus can never be generated because there is no end to these pleasures. They come and go and they never come and stay with us.
How to increase the focus?
Every individual should be exposed to severe military training and nationalistic attitude. They should know how difficult it is to have freedom. Misuse of freedom is the doorway to anarchy and death.
False Education System
Our education system is false. We have to introduce the science of ‘subject’ in schools. Who are we? Even a child should be able to discuss. Every child has to work in a hospital and render service to patients. Corrupt officials, if proved beyond doubt, have to be executed. There should not be any mercy and this will make others scared. Nothing works if fear is not there. The teaching of basic tenets of every religion has to be presented to all students so that they come to know about other religions. A strong national feeling has to be inculcated among the students and teachers. These changes bring about changes in brain connections. This has to be taught to children. It takes at least 25 to 40 years for social reformation.
Focus is there with those who are happy with what they have, and who have developed a sense of gratitude for their possessions. People with simple living and high thinking have to be respected which motivates the youngsters to emulate them.
Thank you

Originally Answered: What can we do to increase our concentration?
Story Time:
Last Friday, I was playing with a needle and I accidentally pricked my thumb.
I went to the office. My manager assigned me some task. The moment I started typing from keyboard I felt the pain in my thumb.
Even though it was a minor injury, it was enough to divert my concentration from my work.
After lunch, my manager asked about the progress of my work (which was almost zero).
He said, “It is urgent, Ashish”. I need you to complete it by the end of the day, so that we can deliver it to our onsite team.
In the three hours prior to lunch, I hadn’t done anything. But by the end of the day, I completed my work and delivered my code to onsite team.
So what just happened here?
Suddenly I forgot my pain and I concentrated only on my work.
Pain was there.
Work was there.
Initially my priority was my pain.
And then, priority shifted to my work.
This is what happens with concentration.
It is all about priority.
When you start studying and then suddenly you open Quora, Youtube or Facebook, you get diverted because study is not your priority for that moment.
Concentration is nothing but a disease inside our brain, which keeps reminding us our priorities.
How to increase your concentration?
Increase your priority.
If it is important to you, you will find a way.
If not, you will find an excuse.
Focus is directly proportional to the ‘want' of doing work.
Focus will automatically be created if you stay calm.
Don't try to do things fast.
Studying for a lot of hours won't work, if you lose focus in couple of minutes.
Try to study in gaps rather than for long hours.
Always keep your surroundings clean and minimal which helps in focusing one thing.
Make a list of things you want to day in a day and try to do one thing at a time, don't do multi-tasking.
The best and the most important thing we should do to increase focus and discipline as well is to meditate meditate and meditate. Don't think about anything just empty your mind and meditate. It will increase focus from time to time, ofcourse it won't increase focus just in a day or two but it will work if you be consistent.
These were some.of the points which can take a note on to increase your focus in studies or anything else you want do it at a time.
This is somethings everyone knows, but not everyone follows.
Stop Social Media: Either control your usage or dexe them. Choice is yours.
Wake up Early: I know this is too tough at times, but at night we might tend to waste time too instead of studying. Try this, you will develop the habit.
Keep your phone away while studying. Keep it on silent or switch it off.
Find your motivation from within. For long term exam preparation, you need to find your motivation within you, otherwise it will burn out sooner or later.
Stop binge watching Netflix. It does not help.
Stop chit-chat for long long hours on WhatsApp, calls, etc
Do it right now, do not wait for tomorrow to come
Keep good company. Don't talk to people who give you the wrong idea about life or demotivate you in your quest.
Keep learning and keep growing.
Do not compare, healthy competition is good, but everyone has their own pace of learning. Stick to yours.
Doing anything consistently requires consistent work toward the goal. If you are looking to improve your focus you first have to understand what your distractions are. I am easily distracted so I have to silence as much as I can such as turning off notifications and closing down apps on my laptop when I am trying to focus.
Even without external distractions, your mind will help fill in the gaps. I journal and also log thoughts in Evernote. I try to log everything, even if it’s a pointless thought or embarrassing. It’s where my mind went and getting it out helps.
The big issue is redirection. You will never be free of distractions whether internal or external. You have to become a master at handling the thought or the interruption and redirecting yourself back to what you were working on without losing whatever flow you had.
You have to prepare for focus, focus doesn’t happen on its own. You have to figure out where your focus breaks down and work to recover from those distractions.
