Found my cat as a little kitten (about 6 weeks old) left to die in a box near a container. I warmed her up with my own body temperature on the way home, she was almost half dead. When I got her home and dry (because it was rainy October and I live in cold Scandinavia), she had a stable and semi-strong pulse.
I took her to the acute vet, I'm a student and I didn't have much money, but I would rather eat oats for two-three weeks than let another living creature die. I ended up bottle feeding her every 2 hour every night and rushing home to bottle feed her in my school breaks.
That little thing is my child, all that bonding in the night when I bottle fed her. I have PTSD, and because of her, I don't suffer from nightmares anymore.
When it was bad, she would panic and wake me up so I didn't have to suffer through them. Even a year after I had my last nightmare, she still sleeps with her nose on my neck or cuddles with my hand and keeps her nose on my wrist to check my pulse so she can wake me up the instant she detects any distress.

I have had dogs since I was a child. Some dogs are dogs. They do doggy things and interact with you in the manner we typically associate with dogs. The two dogs I currently have act like children. Their behaviours and how they interact with me and persons they come into contact with call to mind a toddler. If I lift one and put him to bed, the other stops what she’s doing and waits for me to pick her up and put her to bed too. If I step on a paw by accident they will put out that paw to be kissed and cuddled and expectantly wait for me to rub imaginary balm on it. They throw stones across the floor and hop to the spot like they’re playing hopscotch. If I have to leave them at my mom’s house they sit in her rocking chair, help her garden, and bolt out the door when I come back to collect them, wrapping their paws around me and putting their head on my breast. People are free to treat their dogs anyway they want, so long as that treatment is responsible and loving and healthy. Btw, Polar Bear is on the left and Salty is the fluffy one on the right

I’m going to tell you a little story.
For my entire life, I studied Dogs and worked with Dogs. I was entirely of the opinion Dogs should be treated as such and not like a baby.
Fast forward a good couple of years. I was completely miserable, quite honestly life had chewed me up and spit me back out again. I didn’t want to be here anymore.
Then, 7 days before my Birthday a literal ball of sunshine came into my life. He was 3kg and terrified. He was abused, broken, miserable, and terrified. I knew exactly what to do with him because I had studied Dog behaviour all my life. Well, turns out all my studying and knowledge was entirely useless because this tiny soul was so broken that nothing seemed to work with him. The Vet even advised me just to put him down, twice.
I had absolutely no idea what to do with him. Until, I realised I was abused, broken, miserable, and terrified too. I opened my heart to him, there were nights he was too afraid to sleep so I would sit up until 5am crying to him. It was almost as if we shared each other’s whole life and became as one.
Not once did he say ‘Get over it’ ‘Everything will be fine’ or ‘It doesn’t matter’ he just listened, with a paw on my leg and his soft eyes watching me.

You would think, that Dog has done more than enough, I can see why he’s special but oh, there is so much more.
I have 5 different chronic illnesses that are currently eating away at my body and not getting any better.
In the beginning no one believed me. My family, friends, and even Doctors were adamant it was all in my head and I had to get on with things. My boy was the only one who could see my intense flares of pain and would come right to my side and keep me grounded when the pain consumed me.

I have PKD and one of the largest cysts on my kidneys had burst in the early hours of the morning. All I remember is trying desperately to drag myself to the toilet but constantly blacking out. I blacked out once and completely bashed my face open, I was now bleeding on the outside as well as the inside.
Eventually I gave up, I couldn’t keep crawling towards my phone it just wasn’t an option and then I noticed right by my side was my boy. He was standing there looking horrified and waiting to be told how to help, I blacked out again.
When I woke up again he was running towards me my iPhone in his tiny mouth and then nudging it under my hand. I was in complete shock, even through my pain I couldn’t believe it. He never picks anything up and yet here we was bringing me what I needed most. I held him close and began to phone an ambulance. My phone was dead.

After waking up in the Hospital I was told that not only was my cyst causing internal bleeding, one of my falls had caused another bleed on my kidney.
His name is Jamie. Jamie saved my life.
For all those reasons, I will never treat him like just a Dog. If I had just treated him like a Pet do you think he would have saved my life twice? We share such a close bond that he actively picks up on a sudden change in my mood, temperature, blood pressure, and pain levels. He is my best friend and my World.
He is my Angel.

I have lived with 14 dogs over the years. I never thought of dogs as children until the last two.
I was taking my older two dogs for a hike on Méxican farm roads. One of them found these two on the brink of death intentionally left out in the Sun to die. I poured water on them to cool them immediately and brought them home determined to keep them alive.
I made them dog milk formula and fed them every two hours and that included through the overnight. Visits to vet, long walks as they grew older, housebreaking and more.
These two are my babies.

There was a point in my life, after my divorce, when I was living alone. I didn’t get contact with my child during the week. And I didn’t see any point in going home to a dark, silent, empty apartment alone. So I started just staying at my office until I was exhausted every night, then going back to the apartment to sleep for 4–6 hours, shower, put on clean clothes, and eat something. And I realized that if something didn’t change soon, I would stop bothering to do any of it. There wasn’t any point in doing anything. Not working, not eating, not sleeping.
So I went to the shelter and looked at cats (because a cat can stay in an apartment all day, if food and water and a litterbox are available). And most of the cats there were extremely wary of people, hugging the back walls of their cages and watching us. Except mine. She up to the front, to ME specifically, and asked, “There you are. Where have you been? I’ve been waiting for you. Can we please go home now?” (People don’t choose cats; cats choose people. If a cat didn’t choose you, it won’t stick around you.) So I adopted her, or she adopted me, and I was able to take her home after she was spayed a few days later. I think the fee was $27, something absurdly cheap like that. That was in the spring of 2005.

She died this February, she had an intestinal blockage or cancerous mass (the vet said she would not have survived surgery).
She needed me and loved me and kept me alive and never judged me. No human being has ever loved me so purely.
My friends had never thought of me as a cat person and they will probably never know her story.
If someone else treats an animal like a child, I don’t know their story. But I have no reason to think such treatment is unjustified.

I am nearly 50. I have no children. I live alone.
Frankly I've had a shit adult life. Working over 25 years at a menial job while suffering a severe and until recently, undiagnosed mental illness. Since leaving my last job 8 years ago I've had a complete breakdown and since struggled to get work unsuccessfully. Against me counts my age, a worsening disability known as Essential Tremor, lack of societal normalisation (husband, kids, car, mortgage) and indeed my mental illness.
I have no pleasures in life but my cat. No responsibilities but my cat. Nothing to pour my heart into but my cat, damn it.
Would you deny me my cat, too?
Just to clarify, I treat my cat like a cat not a human child. However I love her as if she was my child. She is a vulnerable living thing for which I have taken full responsibility. I pay for her care. I care for her. If she is sick I take her to the vet. I speak for her because she has no voice and I love her unconditionally even when she's a naughty girl.

I adopted my Blanche from a Korean couple in October 2018. She’s a 4 year spayed female Khao Manee with beautiful differently colored eyes. But honestly, I wasn’t that kind of cat person or cataholic at the beginning until I finally have one in my life. She’s more than just a pet but more likely to be a close friend, a real family member who always keeps me company during my gloomy days. You can’t imagine the joy that cats can bring to you, even when they’re being obnoxious, and the feeling of being needed while your furry friends begin to purr and roll on their backs, exposing their vulnerability to you…
But if you ask me why people treat their pet as their own child, I would say because they need us just like a little kid, you need to provide them with the proper and precise amount of food every day, to take them to the vet when they’re sick, to hire a pet-sitter when you’re out of town, to learn how to deal with their behavior problems… just the way you look after your kids.
Some pet parents choose to give up their animal companions because they can’t live with those problems, aka, responsibilities. I don’t know if it’s appropriate for holding this opinion but I literally think those people who buy animals from pet stores or kennels then abandon them on the street won’t be good parents if they have or will have a child. After all, for you, they’re probably just pets or playmates; But for them, you’re their whole world.

但如果你问我为什么人们把宠物当作自己的孩子，我会说，因为它们需要我们，就像一个小孩一样，你需要每天给他们提供适量的食物，当它们生病的时候带它们去看兽医，当你不在的时候请一个宠物保姆，学习如何处理它们的行为问题……就像你照顾你的孩子一样。
一些宠物父母选择放弃他们的宠物伴侣，因为他们无法忍受这些问题，也就是责任。我不知道这种观点是否合适，但我真的认为，那些从宠物店或狗舍购买动物，然后把它们遗弃在街上的人，如果他们有或将要有孩子，就不是好父母。

I never had a dog growing up, just cats. Our sweet baby, her name was actually Baby, and she would follow me all the time, like a child. It bothered me until I realized she was learning me/us as a child so I talked to her as if a child. The eyes speak, the perked ears, the wagging tail and just the sweetness she exhibited. Baby was an extension of our family, a four-legged child.
Baby lived a long, spoiled life being rescued off the streets. I still miss her looking at me with those beautiful eyes, tilted head like she understood everything I was saying. Baby left us two years ago. I hugged and held her tight of her last breath, knowing she was loved and felt love.
This photo was her looking at me, like c’mon mom, let’s go. How could I not? Baby soon had me trained.
