Beijing has just held a half-marathon with a difference - with human runners left standing by a record-breaking robot. Humans and humanoids ran in separate lanes to avoid accidents or collisions. The winner, the aptly named Lightning, put in an astonishing performance. DW spoke with Ravinder Dahiya, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at Northeastern University in Boston, and also a specialist in robotic touch sensing.

In February 2026, Galgotias University faced significant backlash after a professor claimed a Chinese-made robot dog was developed in-house at a major AI summit in New Delhi.
During a televised interview at the India AI Impact Summit, Professor Neha Singh presented a robot dog named "Orion.
stating it was developed by the university's Center of Excellence under a ₹350 crore AI initiative.
Social media users quickly identified the machine as the Unitree Go2. A commercially available quadruped robot manufactured by the Chinese firm Unitree Robotics.

Military applications concern me greatly. Governments will no longer be held in check from launching wars because of friendly casualties. When war is only a data point on a financial spreadsheet we are in trouble. This is only magnified with inexpensive drones. The technology already exists to launch a thousand drones at the cost of 10 missiles. It's a nightmare scenario for the defender. To put that into perspective, the USA is spending 2 billion dollars a day in Iran. That 2 billion could field more than 57,000 drones every day. Drones that hunt people using facial recognition.

Not impressed a machine outran humans, that should be an easy feat for a machine vs any biological creature... I am however, impressed they ran that far without falling over. All the walking / running robots I've seen so far inevitably fall over after a little while.

Love how American media think first "oh, it's a Chinese gimmick" until the freak out start one year later when the jump in technology it's clear.
