It actually does, nominal GDP depends on USD exchange rate. Indian economy did not contract at all and is still the fastest growing major economy according to same IMF report.
Do you know how India surpassed Japan last year in nominal GDP figures , because yen feel against dollar. But thisyeat rupee fell.
JPY has strengthened compared to start of year while ruppe has fallen almost 4%. Not to mention base year revision happend further decreasing nominal GDP.

Also india didnt overtake japan because of yen compared to dollar, yen already was way more less compared to dollar even before that. Its a simple thing, a country of 1.4 billion people even with a poorer workforce can still beat the country with a lesser population but richer/well paid population. We overtook japan purely cuz of our sheer size. Nothing to do with exchange rates. We should be always focusing on macroeconomic indicators, like gdp, inflation and interest rates. But what india relaly needs is structural change.

Because this is a dumb metric anyway. We slipped to 6th. did your life significantly change? No. Next year if we climb to 3rd will your life significantly change? Still no.
“We are Nth largest economy sarr ”. Is only good for chest thumping jingoism. What actually makes quality of life better is GDP per capita and there we are ranked somewhere around 140.

IMF measure economies in doller terms, so now they are calculating the economy size in 95 rupee insted of 85 rupee when done previously, which shows the economy as smaller
But when we calculate in rupee terms, we've grown good and the economy is also doing good.
