Traveling to China tomorrow and nervous about it

good morning/ evening everyone.
so I'm from the U.S and I will be traveling to China tomorrow for two weeks. while I am excited about visiting the country again, I'm also a little nervous because of the war with Iran currently going on. I'm just nervous at what the reception will be from the population if they find out I'm American. curious to hear your thoughts about it

You'll be fine. And please my friend, no matter what will happen to you, please do post another experience of your China trip when you come back home. Waiting to see it.

I recently traveled in China with an Iranian Canadian. It did surprise me that literally every single person knew about the current war (like even aunties and uncles in small towns) and showed concern/support for my friend after learning about his heritage, which he welcomed. So it's not true to say no one knows or cares.
With that being said, I don't think anyone will project hostility onto individual Americans. People are in general still just curious about foreigners. The max you get is likely people making uninvited comments on how evil American government is and expect you to agree with them.
If it helps, you can checkout YouTuber ludwig's videos on motorcycling across China to get some reassurance. He basically straight up told everyone he met he's a "white colored American", and only once there was an uncle who immediately reacted with "America is not good". Yet the uncle still helped them with directions.
Don't disguise yourself as a Canadian by the way.. they don't have a better rep either nowadays

Don't worry. Everyone knows there is a difference between Government and people. But Chinese people are often curious if you start a deep dialog. Even you are asked some US related questions everyone knows it is towards the government not the people like you.
I just saw one US youtuber is been asked about Epstein islands by an Chinese country side kid, and so awkward and funny moment.

Avoid talking politics to taxi drivers and you'll be fine

Don't bother. Chinese won't care about the war. Even most Chinese don't like Japan, Japanese tourist will be treated equally.

USA is literally at war with someone at all times, and Americans in China have never been affected by any of that month's bullshit. Just be normal and not be flagrantly American, like you should be in any country.

Follow the laws in China, and be respectful. No one gives a crap about where you're from.

Don't worry my friend, we will cook you alive.
Haha jk. You will be fine. We here all know its a political game with the leaders.

Don't worry about it. Chinese people are friendly and generous and will not blame you for something that your government does. Treat people with respect and you will get the same in return. In fact, if you are nice withy them, they will form a positive opinion about American people based on your interaction. It is so easy to say," Yes I think Trump is crazy too."

Hahaha yeah I say that already here , but thank you I appreciate it.

You will be flayed on arrival.LOL,Seriously speaking. Be polite, respect locals and their way of living etc.. don't be that obnoxious American and y'all be fine.

Nothing bro, you'll be respected and welcomed, unless you dine and dash lol.

Honestly, it's no big deal. Some locals---whether elderly folks or kids---might joke about America's awkward situation right now, but they're only mocking the government, and won't give you any trouble at all.

As a fellow USA citizen living in China, I identify myself as a citizen of my home City: San Francisco (Jiu jin Shan), which gets an entirely different response than simply "Mai Guo".

Perhaps most of the people who ask you are old people. When they learn that you are an American, they will say, "Americans are hateful. But don't worry, as Chinese, I can say that this is a common phenomenon. The collective labor that the old people took part in when they were young makes them associated with the country, which makes them very interested in politics. I want to emphasize that this is more likely to show up in the old people. If you are worried, you can ask the young people for help (they will be very polite to foreigners even if they pay attention to current events.

You could try bashing Trump to get closer to Chinese people;
or, you could try praising him---that works too.
你可以试着通过抨击特朗普来拉近与中国人的距离;

I'm not Chinese, but am from the US and I was living in China when the Iraq war broke out. Not gonna lie, it was a bit tense for a week or so but nobody really gave me any grief about it. The 'tenseness' may have just been in my own head, though. A few people asked me questions about it, but not aggressively. Of course, they were people who knew me personally, not strangers. All in all, I can't see it being much of a problem. Other foreigners you might meet there will probably give you a harder time about it than the Chinese.

we dont care about where you're from, the war were started by your government, not the people, just to be a good person and enjoy your trip

From the US, been living in China for years. No one cares. Haven't noticed any different treatment since the war

The Chinese people viewed this war as a joke, not as something to hate.

I just had a conversation about that early this morning with my friend in Chongqing. He was asking me when I planned on returning, I had just been there in January, and I said the same thing you did; I'm concerned about the current status of the war. Without skipping a beat, he said China had nothing to do with that war. any concerns.
My main point was airline travel costs will go up and the tensions between the countries governments are a concern. So while I agree with you around being concerned, the Chinese people won't blx an eye about it.
Now you may get looks because you're a foreigner in general, I still laugh at the two teenagers that wanted to take a picture with me at the forbidden palace, but that is normal. Other than that, enjoy your trip. I hope you have a great time and want to go back over and over and over again like I do.
CautiousFrosting220
Hey thanks man your story really helped put things into perspective for sure. To be fair I was there during the height of the trade war back in 2025 so there is that lol

You'll be fine, the Chinese (in person at least) usually keep politics to themselves, especially if you don't speak Chinese. Also why would they automatically assume you're American, or even care. Unless you flash it in their faces they won't even think about it.
The effect of the war hasn't even really started to set in yet for the average person here yet as they're very good at bulk managing inflation. TBH I as a British person am probably more pissed of with your government than the vast majority of Chinese.
JunketSubstantial817
I would actually be more worried going to Europe at the minute. For perspective petrol in China is about $5.40 per gallon, in the uk (which isn't the worst in Europe) it's over $8.50 per gallon. It's weird putting that in gallons
After all the Greenland stuff and some of the other stuff trump has said, plus this war, Trump is truly loathed in Europe.
On the plus side though he's making our far right parties look really really bad right now.
At the end of the day if you're that worried, just say your Canadian
Regardless, enjoy the trip
