Could China's adoption of electric vehicles shield it from the energy crisis? FRANCE 24 English

As crude prices hover around the $110 per barrel mark on Monday morning, consumers worldwide are feeling the impact of the war in Iran and the closure of the Hormuz Strait when they head to the petrol pump. In China, where more than half of new car sales are for electric vehicles, that impact may be less pronounced.

China has been preparing for this moment for decades. 45,000km of high speed rail and the gargantuan EV push are just 2 examples

as well as city metro transits. they basically can live a fairly okay life without petrol.

A month ago it was called overcapacity by the west.
@stehgrad
Overcapacity and shielding China from an oil crisis are two different topics. Overcapacity is still real, since so many Chinese companies compete in the market and not everyone in the world can afford to switch to an EV in 2026, 2027 or in the near future.
@jackbleiham8475 @stehgrad
I wished we had some overcapacity
@falsch4761 @stehgrad
I heard they are catching up with demand. What overcapacity you are talking about?
@samanthajones4877 @stehgrad
if China didn’t have “overcapacity” then there would be zero exports.
@angy9730 @stehgrad
Without overcapacity, there would be no competition, and you’d never be able to afford it

China is actually the 5th larger oil producer, they pump more oil then Iran does.

China is home to 1.4 billion people and is a major consumer of energy, yet this time around, it has remained unaffected by the energy crisis. As I write this, the two air conditioners in my home are running at full blast (as I prefer my living space to be a bit warmer). I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to all those individuals and nations on the internet who criticize China—you have effectively become China's finest opposition party!
@Gert-DK
Yesterday, the wind blew quite a lot here in Denmark, so electricity prices fell to €0,01 per kWh. Dirt cheap to charge your EV.
@timomikkola4045 @Gert-DK
And world wide used EVs from car dealers are sold fast at the moment and easy to guess it will continue.

@HellespontNicholas
Oh my god. Why that cheap electric price ? Almost triple price in my country.
@timomikkola4045 @HellespontNicholas
Lots of wind and solar power. Just keep adding them and price go down.
@HellespontNicholas @timomikkola4045
make sense. however, €0.04 is also acceptable for me.

location in a city in southwestern China. Half a year ago, I sold my 2014 Mazda CX-5 and bought a DFSK E5 PHEV with a 32 kWh battery. Thanks to government subsidies, I only paid around $8,500 for it.
The car has a pure electric range of 230 km. There are commercial charging stations in my community, and electricity costs roughly $0.15 per kWh. My daily round trip to work is about 40 km, so I only need to charge it once a week. Even on long trips using gasoline, the fuel consumption is just 5.3 liters /100 km. I’m really happy with my decision.
@wamnicho
That would be the end of the U.S. dollar if everything became electric. The U.S. dollar is only strong because countries require it to buy oil, there would be no need to hold dollar reserves if everything became electric

Germany could have cheap Chinese electric cars for 5-10 thousand Euros but they put tariffs on them and even banned them now all their EV’s from VW cost 35-60k Euros thats insane no wonder no one can afford that
@mikeshafer
Germans should buy electric vehicles instead.

Even though Germany’s infrastructure is relatively well-developed compared to other European countries, it is still somewhat backward, and charging stations are not that widely available.
@mikeshafer
China was already at peak oil consumption before the war. Each day there are more EVs on the road as ICE vehicles are retired. They're going to be fine. We should do the same.

There are around 20K Chinese EV sold in France, but they have huge tarrifs. Canada just allowed 50K Chinese EV to enter the country tarrif free.

Consumers will definitely benefit from an open market. Yet, it is still those in control and their rich friends and CEOs benefits unfortunately. Higher and higher cost of living are the days to come.

The energy crisis will definitely be there. But China's long-term strategy of mass EV adoption and clean energy will definitely soften the blow..... this is not rocket science. This is the stark difference between being smart (China) and "thinking you are smart" (Europe).

Don't forget China just started building the biggest dam in Tibet, which clearly will make the country less and less dependent on coal in generating powers going forward.
@TAL142
China worry about energy crisis. But why western media don't worry their own energy crisis but worry about China? China has slightly more cars than U.S. with 4 times more population. So, it relied on public transportation a lot more than the U.S. China leads the world in every renewable energy production. 50% of the new cars is EVs. But somehow Europe (US media) is concerned about China but not themselves.
@rustychassis
Bought an EV 3 years ago. I'm mostly pretty dumb but sometimes I can make really good calls, like this one.

We have reached peak demand before peak supply of oil. Petrol diesel engines become more efficient, hybrid cars r increasing, electric cars r new normal.
@angy9730
China has preliminarily completed its energy structure transformation, shifting from a fossil-fuel-dependent country to an electrified one, with non-fossil energy consumption now exceeding that of oil.
@bigbuilder10
Where does the electricity for Chinese EVs come from? Fossil fuels from the Middle East. They had been building out more natural gas and oil power plants to move away from coal but now are focusing on coal again because they can’t get energy from the Middle East

this is the comparison of smart and stupid
@chaichad7227
Electric vehicles and public charging infrastructure are both indispensable, and the quantity, price, and ease of use of public charging facilities will largely determine the final choice of buyers. So in the end, it all comes down to infrastructure.
@porkypine13
yeah in my country people are now selling off their gas cars. Especially those with diesel cars
@Gert-DK@porkypine13
Where are you from? Yes, diesel is a pain. Both gasoline and diesel will drop when the crisis is over. But diesel drops way slower, because the world runs on diesel. Luckily, our charging grid here is good. Excellent for EVs and OK for e-trucks. It means many transport companies have their last diesel truck, and companies with e-trucks will outcompete the companies with a fleet of diesel trucks. We must thank Trump for his excellent actions to promote e-transportation everywhere, except the US.
@TSYCh-f9g
I just replaced my gasoline car with an EV last month. And once you've driven an EV, you'll never want to drive an oil-powered vehicle again. The intelligence of EV is beyond that of gasoline-powered vehicles. The monthly electricity bill is only one-tenth of the petrol expense.
@kylejohnson6775
New renewables also outstripped demand growth in the last 1 or 2 years, so they are beginning to displace fossil fuel.

@dominicbritt
They still buy oil at global market prices - they have a higher proportion of electric cars than combustion powered cars…
@Silvan-e5k@dominicbritt
Because petroleum is not only a fuel for vehicles, but also one of the key raw materials for modern industry, known as the lifeblood of modern industry. Although China is not particularly strong in innovation, it is indeed a major industrial country, so its crude oil consumption is extremely large.
