The publisher of the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf and the Irish Independent has suspended one of its senior journalists after he admitted using AI to “wrongly put words into people’s mouths”.
Peter Vandermeersch, the former head of the Irish operations at Mediahuis, said he “fell into the trap of hallucinations” – the term for AI-generated errors – when using the technology.
Vandermeersch, a fellow of “journalism and society” at the European publishing group, has been suspended from his role.
The experienced journalist said he had summarised reports using AI tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s NotebookLM, and not checked whether the quotes from those summaries were accurate. He subsequently published them in his Substack newsletter.
The errors were highlighted by an investigation by one of Mediahuis’s own titles, NRC, where Vandermeersch had been editor-in-chief in the 2010s. NRC alleged Vandermeersch had published “dozens” of quotes that were false and that seven quoted individuals in his posts said they had not made the statements attributed to them.
“I wrongly put words into people’s mouths, when I should have presented them as paraphrases. In some cases, it reflected my interpretation of their words. That was not just careless – it was wrong,” Vandermeersch wrote in a Substack post headlined “I am admitting my mistake”.
Vandermeersch added: “It is particularly painful that I made precisely the mistake I have repeatedly warned colleagues about: these language models are so good that they produce irresistible quotes you are tempted to use as an author. Of course, I should have verified them. The necessary ‘human oversight’, which I consistently advocate, fell short.”
Vandermeersch’s Press and Democracy blog writes regularly about “the vital connection between a free press and a healthy democracy”.
In a statement, the Mediahuis group’s chief executive, Gert Ysebaert, said: “At Mediahuis we apply strict rules for the use of AI, where diligence, human oversight and transparency are essential. The fact that these principles were not followed runs counter to the standards we uphold and to our commitment to readers that we stand for reliable journalism. We are discussing this with Peter Vandermeersch and have decided to temporarily suspend him from his role as fellow.’’
Mediahuis has also removed a number of articles written by Vandermeersch from the Irish Independent website.
AI tools such as ChatGPT are used by hundreds of millions of people for an array of tasks ranging from the relatively straightforward, such as suggesting recipes, to carrying out complex academic research. However, they are prone to making errors.
Vandermeersch said he made a second mistake by failing to correct false quotes immediately, instead leaving that work to a title he had overseen for nearly a decade. He said he was enthusiastic about the possibilities of AI and had wanted to experiment with them extensively.
“Journalism is human work,” he wrote. “I remain convinced that AI can be a powerful tool – one that can help journalism become better, dig deeper, and be more precise. But not by using AI in the way I did in the early months of this blog.”
Vandermeersch declined to comment.

It's not a suspension, it's an opportunity! Would you like me to make a list - I can add a lot of ✨emojis✨ even if you don't need them - of people who were suspended and had an amazing career afterwards?
@GrammerJoo
I’m thrilled to share a major learning opportunity: I was recently suspended over AI-generated quotes. In today’s fast-paced digital landscape, navigating the intersection of innovation and authenticity is a journey. This setback was actually a setup for a massive comeback.
@PensiveinNJ
There’s something about the way he says they’re irresistible quotes that really bugs me. They aren’t quotes they’re bullshit. I guarantee this isn’t the first time he’s used the tools it’s just the first time he got caught. Fucking insufferable.
@IsisTruck
How is this not immediate firing?
@Stijnnijst
It is customary. I don’t know all the the details, but he could also have been fired. Almost all newsrooms have an AI charter that clearly states the sanctions and what is authorised use.
@tarwatirno
An author outsourcing the non-creative part of their job to an artificial creativity machine is just so stupid you can't make it up. I guess it's irresistible to authors without any natural creativity.
@JorgJorgJorg
Did he apologize with ChatGPT as well?!
@sally_says
This man is disgusting. I've been a reporter and have worked alongside journalists for many years. We are so sensitive about accuracy because our credibility and income hinges on it, and so I'm staggered that this guy thought it was okay to copy AI output and paste it into his content. It's been four years since ChatGPT's release, everybody must know by now that AI tools sometimes spit out utter, made-up bollocks. But a journalist should know this better than anyone else.
@NinjaSilver2811
I remember in school how every teacher would say don't use wiki as a source, use the actual sources. This seems like the new wiki.
@DeadMoneyDrew
Reading this article makes me think of the douchey newspaper reporter from the final season of The Wire. "AI...What does the A stand for" "Artificial" "Ahhh. What does the I stand for?"
@Ida know, man.
Vandermeersch added: “It is particularly painful that I made precisely the mistake I have repeatedly warned colleagues about... Of course, I should have verified them.” Ida know, man. I'd consider this the opposite of "good."

"In some cases, it reflected my interpretation of their words. That was not just careless-it was wrong."
@DomesticPanda
That’s hilarious lol. I really don’t understand why so many people use AI for writing. I feel like it’d take me more time to prompt it in such a way that the output looks like something I’d write, than it would to just write it myself. Maybe they don’t care how they come across? Idk.
@Code_0451
Went to his blog to check if this was real, and yes! The whole blog post feels very typical AI: perfectly written, but totally devoid of any style or personality. Frankly don’t get it either, especially if you pretend writing is your profession. How can you copy & paste this thinking “yeah sounds great”?
@obvioustwattery
Oh you can perfectly use it for writing. The problem exists in thinking that the output is good as is. AI isn't an output. It's inspiration.
@brzrR
Then your not using it right. You can train ai to write like you. And the flaws that are still in ai are going to get ironed our before the end of the year. Now it still needs a human in the loop soon it wont.
@ipostatrandom
People using it wrong doesnt change the fact that its a tool. If you're worried about people losing skills, thats been happening since forever. I doubt most people still know how to farm. Many cant even read a map anymore for taking long trips thanks to gps. It's the price that comes with technological advancement. Not saying thats always a good thing, it just is.
@ipostatrandom
I doubt people will lose the ability of critical thinking, that one's too hardwired into our brains.
@DomesticPanda(回复 @brzrR)
I use AI heavily at work and actually work at an AI company. I’m always on top of the new tech. And I still despise its usage for anything creative. I’m all for automating mundane work, but offloading creative work is just soulless. I’ve got several people at work who proudly proclaim that Claude helped them write x or y document. And then they actually expect people to read their 10 page AI generated word vomit. If they couldn’t be bother to write it, why should I bother to read it? Sorry for the rant but I’m so burnt out of seeing people push AI into everything and not stopping to think whether it’s a good idea or not.
@SkywardPhoenix
I only use it to generate an intro and ending beczuden I'm bad at those. And then I usually just rewrite theirs to be better.
@National_Today2218
It's so easy. Just do a full page of stream of concienceness notes and things you want to say. Or notes of a 2h meeting. You only have to read it again, edit here and there, add some stuff or dexe a bit and voila your finished
@Caved
To be fair, if there's one profession that would sound the most like AI in their writing, it'd be editor in chief.
@Vermino
What kind of 'knowledge and experience' is he referring to? It's clearly not about researching and vetting his sources.
@RozaJetis
@Nearby-Composer-9992
I hate that supposed professional journalists use AI to write for them but the suspension part seems a bit harsh? Whatever he was doing is probably going to be replaced by even more AI anyway..
