I went to China last October for the first time since 2016 (and I lived in China for 7 months back in 2012) and imo it was a lot less than it used to be. Smoking as well. In 2012 (in Beijing where I lived) spitting was everywhere, smoking was everywhere, kids taking a crap in the middle of the street everywhere (they wore pants with a hole in them for that exact purpose, didn't see that a single time in 2025).
So I guess there's improvement? China in 2012 and in 2025 was the biggest change in a country I have ever witnessed. I felt 2016 was different from 2012 but this was an entirely new dimension of differences.

As someone from an Asian background myself (though not Chinese) I think it is a combination of smoking and bad air quality leading to build up of mucus, and cultural belief that expelling it is better for overall health than not.
Someone else who’s more familiar with it can correct me, but I understand this is a generational thing too and that younger people particularly those growing up in urban areas are less likely to engage so it may be phased out eventually.

I live in Beijing and still see plenty of younger people do it. Much less so than the older generation of course but by the sheer number of the population/density that still means a lot of younger people are going to be spitting in any given place. I don't see it going away any time soon

The Chinese lost their original culture a long time ago and whoever is taking care of these places only care about tourism money. Same with a lot of "ancient towns" or "old quarters". All the tenants are new and interested in fast money.

Yes yes yes to the verification one. I’m staying in a hotel, I have a flu, and I of course don’t have a Chinese phone number. I cannot get things delivered - I need to go out and potentially infect people to get food, which is difficult within itself (not the fault of the country or people of course), because of the language barrier. It sucks seeing the robots deliver food to people’s rooms and I’m unable to have this experience!
The line pushing and inconsideration on public transport is extremely frustrating also.
The national parks (especially Wulong) were absolutely astounding though. Will definitely be back!

U can use your passport to get a Chinese phone number from China unicom. It's easy and cheap. After that u can call didi. Order medicine on JD.com. someone should have told u this. Sighh actually my Chinese relative told us to do this the first day we reach. Very convenient to order nice cheap on JD esp thanks to price war. Medicine too. Fast delivery within 40 min

Didi I was able to sign up with my international number, so don’t stress about that. It also supports English. The problem isn’t signing up for food delivery apps, but rather placing the order - it needs a Chinese number for the driver to communicate with you if needed. The main delivery app doesn’t have an English translate function so it’s very difficult to use. You can use Alipay to access these apps (and translate) however I found it very clunky. Super easy to lix your Alipay directly to the Didi app

I found the ID requirement and reservation requirements at many attractions, especially in Beijing, very frustrating. WeChat would not accept my foreign passport. Even though China advertises some attractions as free or at no cost, foreign tourists often have to book through a third-party website, so they are not truly free. The ID and reservation requirements mean you have to pay third-party fees.

Yeh exactly this, no idea why a simple free or low cost location requires ID to get in. Also even if you have a ticket /QR code, you still need your ID to get though gates.

Yeh must be location based. In Quanzhou, all the free and low cost places I went to didn't require ID. But at Lijiang, I had to use my passport 5 times to go up to the mountain , that was just for one single tourist attraction, they set up like 5 gate points so each time they forced you to use your ID to go through.

China requires an ID or passport for almost everything. Get over it. It is a bit inconvenient. But that is the price of having a civil society with minimal crime and hardly any visible homeless.
Yes there are crowds and long lines. But earthing at Disney properties and the like.
Cost and convenience of travel is so much better than USA or Europe. Ride share is incredibly inexpensive and ride-share cares are often near new and almost always electric. ($2.00 or so for a 3 to 4 mile ride).
However, if you get sick and need to go hospital it gets a bit problematical as an acquaintance is finding out.

I can understand them wanting to track foreigner movements in their country for a couple of reasons:
1. Gives them good data on who's doing what, good for attraction development and marketing
2. Western countries seem to be predisposed to shit on China at every opportunity so I absolutely don't blame them from keeping an eye on us duplicitous bastards.

I had two guys with lit cigarettes INSIDE A LIFT , like they didn't smoke them but the cigarettes were lit up... Baffling scene tbh.

Yeah, it's not *too* bad in Beijing/Shanghai in my experience, but smaller cities and towns it is terrible. Was just on a road trip and stopped by a restaurant in some small town. A whole group of people came in after us and sat beside us and started chain smoking. Completely ruined the experience. Not to mention the loud chewing/slurping. Noises in general can get pretty overwhelming in China

Very fair assessment of what a China is now. Although I haven’t seen much of 6 in cultural diversity, I guess there is regional differences even within China? Kinda like how there isn’t a uniform European culture, Chinese culture can vary within China.

The diversity in culture varies the more you go inland, Han Chinese mostly have similar culture practices but when you venture out to Yunnan, Tibet, xinjiang or Inner Mongolia, you'll see a lot more differences due to the local ethnicity groups.

My wife and have been here for three weeks, another 5 days to go. Re the pushing in, interrupting, etc, I think it's all related to the same personal space thing, but also just that people have shit to do so they are not going to waste it with games of manners to make you feel special which is the Western way. It's not impoliteness, it's just being efficient.
Personally I like it. There's less kowtowing to the white man here - you're just another body taking up space, a good, humbling experience for a white person to have.
I imagine it's like New York but with actually nice people.

Not only overly complicated app for you guys. Its a shitshow for us Chinese too. Yesterday I was at a home renovation appliance expo. I had to use their BS app to get ticket which requires my id and phone number. Things not working on my ticket, had to ask the worker there to help me with the dumb app that I spent so much time. The ticket was 5rmb that I almost throw the cash to their face and walk in.

Fully agree with point 11. Many attractions we encountered are not on trip.com. They force you into WeChat, where you spend upwards of 15 minutes working out translations only to be told you need a Chinese phone number to book a ticket. We couldn’t even book a bus ticket at the panda reserve in Chengdu which felt very unfair. Everyone else can get a bus, but we have to walk because are foreign. Also, daily activities as simple as getting a coffee (like Luckin Coffee) are often done through clunky apps that are frequently unresponsive and bloated with adware (alongside hit and miss translation). We got the Luckin coffee working eventually which was great because their coffee was amazing, but good luck if you’re not a tech savvy person!

Luckin do their entire menu system via wechat. Once you get used to it, it's handy enough, and you can order it on your way to the place so it's ready by the time you get there, but yeah the translation can be a little weird.
 
瑞幸的整个菜单系统都是通过微信操作的。一旦你习惯了，它还是挺方便的，你可以在去店里的路上提前下单，等你到了的时候咖啡就做好了，但是，没错，翻译可能会有点奇怪。

Another thing that frustrated me was the interrupting, and the scenario is this, and it happened to me more than once.
I am talking to a shop assistant, and mid-conversation, another person comes up and starts asking the assistant a question in Chinese *and* the kicker is that the assistant will stop their conversation with me to answer the question that has been asked. And then they come back to me like it was nothing.
It’s happened to me:
- in shops
- restaurants and cafes
- metro stations
- hotels
Did anyone else experience this?
In Australia, where I am, the general thing to do is either wait, or if interrupted, the assistant would advise they are with another customer and will answer their query shortly.

Gotcha.
Funny story. I was in line for a shuttle bus at a busy tourist area and this older man decides to push past me in the queue. He succeeded cos I wasn’t inclined to push back…but I did step up in between him and a woman, who I assume was his wife. That poor woman, it wasn’t her fault. So as the queue starts moving for people to get on the shuttle bus and it got us, it became obvious there were only two seats left by the time it got to us. It was either gonna be me and him (and leave his wife behind for the next one) or he needs to step back. He looked at me to try and get me to move but I feigned ignorance. He eventually relinquished and let me and another guy move up to take the seats while he stayed back to wait with his wife. Lol.

Haha glad you had to stand your ground, that's what I have found what you have to do in China. People don't tend to start a conflict so if you can be assertive you are likely to win the game of chicken.

Sounds about right :-) I reckon if Chicken was a sport the Chinese would be world champions many times over. I was in a Didi today and my driver and another car were trying to merge into one gap at speed. I thought neither would give in but the other guy eventually did. There's no animosity in it and no hard feelings afterwards, just pure calculation.

You can’t exactly blame the Chinese for it as its their norm - it’s not an excuse for uncivilised behaviour but defs don’t take it personally.

Just my personal experience, I have had a hotel in Shanghai asking me to review them , I said yeh I'll do, the guy said if I could do it right away? I said maybe but I'm on a time crunch , then he's like if you don't mind I can write it for you then proceed to borrow my phone to post a glowing review for themselves. That was a 5 star hotel nearby Nanjing Road.
The incentivised one happened more common, like you get a free snack, dessert, drink or coupon if you give them positive reviews.

Dunno whether you've come across this, but restaurants love doing this as well (like for example you would get a free snack by leaving a review), to the point where some servers/shop managers are so used to it that they would just swiftly do it for you instead.

Personally, I just wouldn't consider anything under 4 unless I've been there before. Next, I'd treat the .X (4 ".8", 4 ".5" etc) as the actual score. I also tend to check the menu and actual photos of the place & food beforehand. (also the low score reviews as side reference)

I did Jiangsu, Sichuan, Yunnan and Fujian. Out of them, Lijiang in Yunnan had actual blue sky with clouds in one of the days I stayed. The rest of the trips were filled with hazy skies every single day.

Some other people might be able to chime in on this . I think a lot of toilets are starting to have more western style toilets , but I don't tend to have the need to use public toilets so I haven't really paid much attention or have any issues.

As an American visitor (67) I find the public bathroom situation almost unbearable. Plus no where in public to sit and eat an ice cream or to relax and enjoy the scenery. Yes, the scooter situation is dangerous and find it difficult to even walk your dog without dodging traffic on sidewalks. And the smoking..OMG!

This is a very genuine and true list.
Regarding the verification part, on one hand, it really gets tedious on all the online and electronic stuff. on the other hand, I visit ShenZhen rather often and haven't really come across attractions or events that require ID verification.

Currently in China for three weeks, third visit in the last 15 years. Agree with most of those points. The queueing is what gets me the most however. Maybe more this time as I’m travelling with my 3 year old daughter.
Everything else I can pretty much accept. I do hope they get a handle on the pollution though because overall China is an amazing place to visit.

I had read a lot here before going and was expecting the worst when it came to smoking and line pushing. Having travelled a bit in other countries I have to say, yes, these phenomena exist in China, but at least in my limited experience China was not the worst "offender" in these categories (smoking: hello, beloved Balkans? line pushing / absence of line culture: Israel). But that's also the beauty of travelling, things work differently in other places and follow a different logic.

The smoking was the absolute worst for me, I can deal with the spitting and every other con but just the smoke everryyywhere was so maddening. You can’t even escape it by being inside. I break out in hives and the smell just ruins the taste of your food and made me so nauseated.
But overall the pollution is muuuuch better than years ago, I think thanks to the EVs. China is so high tech.

It's a mix really, if it's very touristy area, it's generally not too bad. Just have to always bring your own TPs as they don't have them inside the toilet.

Fair and accurate list. China is amazing and as a place known more and more as the future it could try to shed some of its “uncouth and rough” past. I’m astonished by the scooters situation and air quality really needs to be addressed, not just for visiting foreigners but everyone’s well being. And the smoking. Some cabs, I’ve even gagged in elevators of higher end hotels.
