US Airmen Wounded in Iranian Missile Attack on Saudi Arabia

On March 27 an Iranian ballistic missile and drone attack on Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia damaged several KC-135 aerial refueling aircraft and one AWACS early warning aircraft and left at least 10 U.S. Air Force airmen injured, two severely.
This is the third known attack on PSAB, which is only 400 miles from the coast of Iran. The air base has been a strategic hub for American forces for years and remains so as part of Epic Fury, hosting several dozen tankers, AWACS, and surveillance aircraft. The factors that make it an important base to the Americans, also make it a target to the Iranians.

Good thing the commanders at the Saudi base didn't line up 2 squadrons of refuelers, wing tip to wing tip on the apron in broad daylight.
@sprocket5526
One would think that lining up aircrafts like ducks is pretty bad idea

Absolutely boils my blood, putting Marines on that island is insane, actually quoting a battle that cost 7000 lives!
Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, have no lessons been learnt?

So they didn’t think shaheds stored in mountains were going to be a problem. Incompetence here is off the charts.
@fishsaltwater5616
Hope group troops is a bluff. The first HD video of a marine trying to unsuccessfully fend off a fiber optic drone will not play well in US.
@indydarkstar
who could have guessed putting a part time faux news host in charge of our military would lead to disaster
@Ieo9017
Ukraine has been, what, 4 years? The US military learned NOTHING about counter-drone in 4 years. Why are those planes in the open? We've spent the last 4 years making fun of the Russians for doing exactly what we're doing...and we're arguable doing it worse!
@ES-je3em
It’s pretty funny how we laughed at the Russians for making these mistakes and now it’s obvious United States has learned nothing. We are making the same mistakes the Russians made years ago.

When giving injured statistics could you state how many returned to service. And Lindsay Graham is an idiot. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Why do American presidents keep equating bombs on target with winning? Made the same mistake in Vietnam.

I'm curious to know if the public has an appetite for battles leaving 7,000 dead and 20,000 injured, it's disheartening to realize our CIC is not conflicted whether or not such things matter

Total incompetence. Have we learned nothing from the war in Ukraine?
@Mr.mysterious76
This war was never about "liberation" of Iranian people and y'all know it. Iranians have rallied around the flag. Iranian missiles and drone productions are still ongoing distributed underground and on surface all over the country on top of the massive stockpiles they already have. China and Russia are also probably producing drones and missile parts for Iran which they'll send eventually assuming they're not already. For the first time since WW2, the US is facing a country that can develop it's own weapons indigenously and actually fight back.
@BacklogSemantics
My greatest frustration with all of this, is that there was a whole massive body of literature and simulation around this exact conflict.
If you worked remotely adjacent to national security and defense, then you had at least seen white papers about this stuff in passing.
None of it was considered. We didnt even build up our strategic oil reserves. No one who knew anything about this signed off on it.
Absolute fucking shitshow.
@austJW
Senator Graham I think is entirely accurate in invoking iwo Jima as a parallel and it's interesting to see his excitement in sending the marines into harms way.
@leo_martinez8330
The top brass in the United States still believe we are in the 2000s, Where the enemy's only response was by land and generally didn't cause major problems, soldiers in civilian clothes were the biggest obstacle. Today it's 2026, and in 4 years of the Ukrainian war, the US learned nothing. They forgot that we are in the age of drones, simple and cheap drones that cause enormous destruction. They can't say that their generals are surprised to see that the enemy has the capacity to destroy their bases. They had 4 years to learn that today drones dominate the field. It doesn't matter if you have the best tank, the best plane, the best bomber; the one that rules the modern battlefield is the drone.
@tayzonday
Words always mean more coming from those who have served in global theaters like you and Mark Kelly. We need more unfazed sobriety and less of whatever has taken its place.
@SmallKiwiTech
What’s the difference in lead up time to Desert Storm and Epic Fury? It’s almost like the increased battlefield complexity requires MORE planning and assets, not significantly less.

@GoEagles-n3v
before we set boots anywhere, there damn well better be a plan for dealing with fpv drones and the like. otherwise, increase tonnage dropped and don't effin forward deploy high value air assets within enemy range

I am just waiting for the true losses to be published once this is over with. The public will be justifiably outraged.
@70mavgr
Iran was preparing for many months. They dispersed their ballistic missile and drone installations all over the country. Making it very difficult to track and neutralize.
@dwaneoconnor5978
So we park our tankers on the ramp like sitting ducts? Just like after Pearl Harbor attack and MacArthur in the Philippines asleep at the switch and gets all his planes destroyed on the ground.
@supergroovy8346
The most insane thing is, before they Killed Ayatollah:
1. The strait was open and in full control of the US and Iran wasn't demanding any control of it.
2. Iran was ready to make a deal where they would give up all uraniam and put their nuclear reactors under full monitoring.
@velisvideos6208
It is somehow fitting for this operation that the 15 point plan by the US has 14 points.
At least they got it about 93% correct.
The rest of Operation Epic Fail might not go so well.

If those are photos of the location of the aircraft at the time of this attack, why aren’t the aircraft dispersed, rather than sitting all together?
@daviddealba1988
This conflict is dragging on despite the destruction of a great amount of Iranian military hardware, namely missile and drone facilities. I'm no military expert by any means, but I think air-refuel and AWACs aircraft are always in short supply, so this strike may have been quite significant to the present war effort against the Islamic Republic.
@DanielWard-c5g
You mean this isn’t a TV show where DJT can just say “you’re fired” to Iran? Who knew they were proud of their country and would defend it? Thank you Ward for actual news, good or bad without the rah-rah. I’m so sad for our amazing men and women putting their lives on the line, blowing up every thing in sight without a clear strategy to their mission.
@chrishooge3442
Iran is going to rig everything to blow. "If we can't have it, you can't have it either." They will shut down the Strait, bombard our forces, and take every oil, gas, and desalinization plant offline. It will take a decade or more for the global economy to recover. We'll put at risk limited Marine and Amphibious assets. One of those boats will burn. I'm no fan of Iran but this is dumb on so many levels. We're going to lose elite units and critical naval assets...for what?
@jimmynickelz

@GintaPPE1000
And to make matters worse, this administration just suspended KC-46 deliveries and is still trying to cancel the E-7 Wedgetail, even after Congress and the USAF have both told them we need it.
At this point there appears to be no goal beyond burning as much US combat power as possible to give China a clear field at Taiwan.
@dixonMibaum
The idea that 2 amphibious warships with, what, 1500 trigger pullers on each of them (at most) are going to be able to take and hold anything is alarming. This would take a full mobilisation. Where is US congress?

This is extraordinary incompetence from our military. There is no valid reason or acceptable excuse for the tanker fleet being exposed like this. That’s not a government issue it is a military leadership issue.
@fredbyoutubing
The US had hundred of thousands of troops on both sides of Iran for two decades and a direct confrontation would still have been catastrophic. Imagine putting a fraction of that on a small island in the drone warfare era.

@markn.3813
Always appreciate your level headed, straight down the middle analysis. Silly and useless comments aside from some people here, I just do not understand why aircraft haven't been more dispersed on airfields. All it takes is one lucky hit to do some serious damage even if you have degraded Iran's missile capabilities by 95%. And before anyone lays everything on the CIC or SECWAR, remember we have a command structure and guy who gives orders and expects people to execute and carry out planning properly using their experience and knowledge, like it should be.

Back in the early 80s we were told that satellites then had the ability to read a newspaper. This military exchange shows that was and is; an utter lie.

@pollyskirt1
Yes its pretty close to Iran , a risk in having air to air tankers lined up in a parking area ,should have been dispersed its an old lesson seemingly never learned,thanks for the report Ward .
@KnEpH131
Talk about underestimation. The genius that decided to keep the tankers and such out in the open, within Iranian reach, knowing full well they were retaliating, needs to be put in courts martial, fined, imprisoned, and publicly ridiculed.

Do you foresee partial reduction of total aircraft on USN aircraft carriers by basing them ashore? This would keep the carriers out of swarms’ way and increase the utilization of Navy squadrons and still leave enough assets on board to protect mother.

Striking the KC-135s lined up like ducks in a row, shows how commercial satellite imagery reconnaissance may lead to missile successful targeting and striking by Iran. Knocking out aerial tankers and wounding service members parked so foolishly at ONE (?) base is a blunder owned by the CENTCOM Commander, the Chairman of the JCS and the Secretary of War. Just wait until Sentaor Graham's Marine invasion of Kharg Island occurs. Iowa Jima was a costly, bloody invasion. In any event, great analysis and far better than the talking heads on American cable TV news channels.
@Mphonik2013
I am not a military tactician, but I think you have one of a few options when it comes to protecting your military assets. Option one place them out of range which is not always practical. Option number two have the ability to take out 100% of arial attacks, which is extremely difficult. Option number three eliminate 100% of the arial threat at its source, difficult to achieve. Option four Make your assets both physically protected and invisible to foreign surveillance and intel.
@JohnnyFastbuck
10% loss in theater, but only 1% of total tanker fleet. If they can't defend an airbase 200 miles away for Iran, how can they defend an island 20 miles from the Iranian mainland.

@Video-tu4vn
I do wonder how often senior military personnel struggle with their duty to serve the government of the day, no matter how much they disagree or question the wisdom with their policy and strategy. I know thy are professionals and they train to fight wars but it must weigh on their minds when they are sending the men and women under their command into battle.
@markb7818
1. I thought the reason you have the tankers involved is to enable the strike assets to be based out of harms way to travel into theatre from a safe place.
2. I thought the KC 135s have plenty of range to keep them similarly remote from theatre.
3. Given that, it’s tricky to understand why this much of the tanker fleet is (presumably that now reads ‘was’) stationed on the closest parking lot to Iran
Not a lot the base commander can do if he pointy head strat guys say it’s a great place to keep em
@charlottelanvin7095
Multiple strikes have occurred on US sites and assets in allied Gulf countries. EWR arrays, signal interception bases and communications assets have been destroyed. US assets and Israel anti missile defenses are thus degraded. This has been widely reported in non US (and not just Iranian) news sources including the BBC. The NYT has only very recently reported on this massive destruction of US assets. The US public is the last to know the truth.
