I've seen multiple people doing a straight up conversion of the Chinese price to CAD and assuming that will be the MSRP. That was basically the claim made in that fake price list (claimed to be from BYD) that circulated on social media, and a lot of people believed it.
Those people are delusional. But so are the ones who say these cars will be no cheaper than current cars sold in Canada. Makes sense that Telus would be made about that, cause as a “Canadian” company they have like 2/3rds of their workforce offshored, and I think do contracting to help other companies offshore. So having companies come in that already have operations overseas naturally makes it impossible for them to do their work of offshoring Canadian jobs.

Nobody buys small cars in Canada though. There is a reason nobody sells subcompact hatchbacks like the Dolphin in Canada any more - they don’t sell well enough.
Honda was selling 3,000 Fits a year before they discontinued it. They sold 55,000 CRVs that year. And that’s when the Fit was one of the only remaining subcompact hatches on the market! The entire subcompact hatch market before it disappeared was like 15,000 sales annually, or about 3/4 of a percent of the national market.

People don't buy them partly because manufacturers don't advertise them. Do you ever remember seeing an advert for a Fit? Neither do I. Manufacturers make more money selling trucks and big ass SUV's so that's what they push.

Honda doesn’t do a tonne of advertising in general compared to other manufacturers- how many Honda ads can you think of in the first place?

Lots of people say this but won’t walk out of a dealer with one. Compact car sales continue to decline, even with a lot of automakers exiting the market and less competition then ever in the segment, and the subcompact segment basically going poof.
Toyota used to sell 40-50,000 corollas a year. They have sold 25,000 the last two years.
Honda used to sell 60-70,000 civics a year. They haven’t sold more than 31,000 since 2021.
Hyundai used to sell 50,000 Elantras a year, they haven’t sold more than 25,000 since 2019.
Sales are still decent in the compact market but half basically halved in the time that the subcompact market disappeared.
