Recently had to do a starter R&R on my Nissan Titan. Starter is under the intake manifold. Bolts face the firewall. I needed a 1/2" ratchet with a swivel head to be able to make the angle and have enough torque to break the bolts loose. Went to Harbor Freight and got one for $20. "Pittsburgh." It worked perfectly. In fact, I think it's as-good of quality as that craftsman junk Sears was selling 15 years ago. I may never use that ratchet again but it wasn't like it was a huge investment. And that's why so many people go to Harbor Freight. We know how to work on and fix stuff.....but we aren't professionals using these tools. I don't need a Dewalt drill. Ryobi is fine for my needs.

​@mindeloman I think I have the same Harbor Freight ratchet. I have a garage full of Ryobi 1.) because their promos have made it easier for me to build my power tool collection and 2.) the battery cost is reasonable. I got a DeWalt contactor's radio. Nice unit, but pricey batteries.

How very true! I tore into my truck's cooling system while changing the water pump a few years ago and got a new thermostat, hoses, etc. for the job. While reinstalling everything, it turned out the damn gasket wasn't included for the thermostat. Since I couldn't drive it to a parts store without a working cooling system, I had to reuse the old gasket and hope it holds.
What a despicable practice by OEMs to save 3 cents!

That was in the day if your starter or alternator started giving you problems, you figured out the issue and fixed it. New Bearings and brushes for alternator (paper clip was as a brush installation tool), replacing the bendix on starters. Now days mechanics don't fix but are just code readers and replace part.

​@whysoserious7014this is coming back around a lot in the enthusiast areas. Put new CV boots on those good axles in your car now. Replace brushes and bearings in alternators and starters. I actually took a gamble on a Chinese alternator for my car. When I got it I removed the voltage regulator/brush assy. The tension on the brushes was horrendous, so I unsoldered them and put them in my OEM voltage regulator and put that in. The basic assembly "should" be ok, it's the electronics.

Napa used to be the go to I was out of town stopped by a different Napa ordered a part looked in the box no little nuts so I tried to put the nuts off the old one on it and it was the wrong thread pitch so I bought one that was more that had nuts on it

They don't even care if there's only one guy running the operation the entire day anymore, they cut off all the festive bonuses (this time round we got a firm handshake and a "Good Job, sonny!") they cut back on quota bonuses (used to be monthly now quarterly and they halved the amount as well ) and the parts I'm seeing are more or less the same as, Advanced auto farts, O'shitty and AnimalZone. Having worked in different auto parts companies I can say with some confidence that they use the same whitebox distributor mevotech, NAPA IMO still has a slight merit with the FLEET line of chassis parts but if you want the same just get the parts from (I believe its a Canadian based company, I have a high suspicion it's quietly Chinese owned) Mevotech, TTX line... 80% of the time it's the same product, with only differences as to exactly what specifications we want the part to perform. China is very very capable of delivering parts that can perform to the standard that we expected American made parts, the problem is everyone plays the damn game like it's a race to the bottom; Who can get it cheapest and fastest, but we forgot about who can make it the best! We used to have fkn standards.

You need shelf space for 2 things insted of 3. The individual parts need to be there anyway, if you have the kit as well it takes up more space. If you just have the kit someone and someone just needs the gasket then you have nowhere on the shelf to put the thermostat. It is just more efficient that way

@Sam-go3mb I had to do that recently on my 2002 Ford Focus Zetec, the thermostat housings are kinda common to leak coolant with age, the thermostat is built into the housing. Wasn't $1200 but it was like $90 CAD for a good quality one.

This is so common in China. You would always get something extra. Oh, and no tipping in restaurants either. You pay what's advertised, not 15% taxes on top and then another 20% tips on top of the taxes.
