As someone who watches zaza it's never really occured to me that he's poor, since the guy literally eats out almost every day at least once. Lonely I have no idea, not enough information. But either way for me, the main reason I watch him is because I'm quite interested in China and also zaza's camera work is pristine, as you said he catches multiple angles and the of his video is overall calming. It's similar to many Japanese POV videos, not limited to the day in a life of a salary man, where the YouTuber mainly targets foreigners who have never been in these countries and showing it's culture.

About a year ago I wanted to check some vlogs. I didn't like it before but after pewdiepie I thought well actually good content, I may catch some ideas for my free time. Sure there was many asians' vlogs. Some were cute and aestetic, and some were "living in [country/city name] without friends/alone" or "working 11 hours in office" or something like that.
It was funny that none of those facts had change anything in video... It was ordinary vlog, just like many others without family in it.
I was thinking back then, why's there soooo many, but now it only got worse.

It’s a trend. My recommendations are filled with videos about “divorced, unhappy, ugly Japanese women” living on very low income. Some of these channels are making more than $2,000 per video through donations. However, in my opinion, this trend will not last long. ive watched zaza since the beginning. a few months back i saw a new channel "dada in China" using his exact format. i called it out on the page and got a reply "thanks for watching!" lol. often i notice that on zaza's page, when he does reply to people his comments aren't really in tune with what was said. he's replying oddly. that could be just the language barrier, idk. i enjoy his content but agree that it's getting old, the same old stuff over and over. him moving to a new town, and the hometown wedding and festival stuff he does, that's kept me around. if he just kept doing variations on the same video i'd leave. he does recycle a lot of b roll though and reuses it for several videos.

People are really naive if they believe that these people are actually struggling lol. When i showed Zaza to my friend he immediately said "ain't no way that fatty is struggling". It doesn't take that much to also see how much subscribers and views they get to understand that from YouTube alone they make enough to live comfortably.
On one side i do understand people who feel outraged by people faking miserable life for content but on the otherside it appeals to many people as most people struggle in life and these channels are just relatable vibe. It's not like they ever asked for donations or help.

I'm glad that its not just me that realized something was a little fishy. At first I really liked seeing what was happening in China and then I started noticing a lot of the people in a negative situation. I mean, it is reality that there will be a lot of people in the world for whom things don't go right but this has become so much to take in all at once. Especially because this content comes by way of an app where a person clearly has to go through some not-so-insignificant expense, for a proclaimed poor person, to produce content. I'm naturally a little skeptical of stuff so even though I may watch, it takes a lot to make me want to donate.

I’ve been following this trend from the very beginning, and in Japan, there’s a strong chance these Japanese salaryman vlog channels being run in an organized way rather than by individuals. First of all, these channels didn’t just grow naturally they exploded. Around a couple of years ago, we suddenly saw over 100 of these channels pop up in a very short period of time. Sure, trends can lead to similar content, but this kind of rapid, large-scale emergence just doesn’t look organic. Also, I’m pretty familiar with Japanese social media, and it’s actually quite rare for Japanese creators to suddenly target a Western audience from the start. So the idea that 100+ “salarymen,” who supposedly work 14-hour days and barely have free time, all started making English-friendly content at the same time is extremely suspicious. It’s much more likely these aren’t individuals at all, but channels run by some kind of organization maybe a shady production company, or scam group. On top of that, the thumbnails, editing styles, subtitles everything looks almost identical across these channels. It feels copy-pasted. That kind of consistency doesn’t happen by accident. It suggests there’s some kind of centralized operation, probably with a shared production manual behind the scenes.

There have even been mentions on Reddit about part-time gigs where people get paid to act as these “salarymen.” If there’s a side job where you can make a few thousand yen just by filming yourself walking around, eating ramen, or counting cash, then yeah, plenty of people would take that. And realistically, most of the ad revenue and donations likely don’t even go to the people on camera, but to whatever group is actually running these channels. If all (or even most) of these channels are connected, then we’re looking at a pretty large-scale business operation. Given that Japan has been cracking down more on scams in recent years, it wouldn’t be surprising if some groups are now using platforms like YouTube as a cover farming sympathy, pushing narratives, and monetizing it through ads and donations. Not sure about China, but in Japan this is definitely being done in an organized way. That's why they never show their faces because what they’re doing is pretty risky

Many of them come from China, South Korea, Japan etc...and there is absolutely no problem with that... However, after couple of months, viewers might get easily bored of the same content, AI generated voice and same room / place...so, better to upload some videos which might create value for the viewers....

Yeah, the videos are curated in a professional style (most likely by a content farm). I noticed the grift by the third short video, but I liked his cooking scenes. Zaza is not poor, and he never said he was poor and became poorer. and he explained he could get $1000 per month from his online sales from Temu platform. he also showes his parents have good apartment in a small town and operate a clothing store, meanwhile his parents is building an retirement villa in the village, and his sister actually has a small warehouse to pack pet food and sell them online etc..One thing is for sure that his content is based on real fact, not for a fancy and fake story.

Yes nowadays there are a lot of miserable story channel. When it is said "unemployment etc." = I will never click them.
I understand your thinking, I can see their pattern too. But in here I think you are generalizing that everybody is copying zaza pattern.
For example in Ting daily life in China case.
Ting failed miserably in her past travel blogs. I scan that travel blogs and it's indeed not interesting. She go back stuck with survival office job. With her real personality is actually freedom village girl = office is her dark tomb.
This woman then while working in boring office trying her youtube second attempt. What I see in her case is = she is not giving up, want to change her life back to her original dream. This is not a beggar case.
While in zaza case, he is already give up and just want to enjoy as much as he can his flying to the moon period, don't want to change.
