A Cheap China Tool That Beat Expectations And Reminded Us Of The America We Used To Know

We needed a fast replacement for a lost Harley Davidson clutch tool, so we hit Amazon in search of something cheap we could get overnight and hopefully get one or two uses out of while we sourced a quality replacement.
What arrived ended up exceeding all expectations in terms of material and construction, but included in the package was an item that reminded us of just how petty and cut throat the American business landscape has become.

Nowadays you buy a thermostat and you have to buy the gasket separately.
@Sam-go3mb
Nowadays you go to buy a thermostat and learn it's integrated into an entire front-engine coolant passage assembly that has to be replaced whole for $1200 and lasts 2 years

I agree, China has enabled me to do mechanical, electrical, and car things I wouldn't have because I'm a wage slave being taxed to death.
@secularnevrosis
Never mind the taxes. You work more and get payed less while the company you are hired by takes out more profits.
Ofc they use that to get policies that is good for them and bad for you. Like paying lower taxes than you do.
@MrSloika
Yup, I remember trying to learn by working on my own car as a kid and I was treated like scum by the local parts and tool sellers. They acted like I was trying to force my way into their exclusive club. . I'm sure most of them are dead now, may they rot in hell.

I used to fill up an air tank for free at a local gas station when I was a teenager but years went by and every time I went there the air hose was broken because people don’t take care of stuff that’s not theirs. After a while they took it down and the free air was no more.
@Ben_Chillin
That's what happened at the little mom and pop gas station I usually go to. They've had an air hose for at least 40 years, free for anyone to use anytime. A couple years ago people started cutting the chuck off, causing the compressor to run all night. For a while they just kept replacing the chuck, until the compressor finally died from running all night
@genXSpartan
Back when I started working as a mechanic at a gas station, my coworkers would make fun of me because I would paint water pumps, valve covers and even intake manifolds on customer cars. It was a time when engines still had corporate colors. Most of the times the customers were in awe. I thought it was being honest.

remodeled our kitchen a few years ago and got the cabinets done by an Amish guy. We asked for a couple of the draws to have pull out shelves. The amish guy delivered them and told me they all are pull out draws. It was just easier for him. And he said "sorry, no extra charge".

I miss being able to go to the auto part store and being able to buy rebuild kits for absolutely everything, carbs, starters, power steering pumps, alternators, brake components, whatever you wanted to fix yourself
@exploringhistory5796
Way back in the early 90s, as a teenager I installed wheels & tires at a local hi-per shop. We ALWAYS cleaned the white letter tires, even if the customer was just carrying them out. Today…I never see cleaned white letters on new tires—not even in YouTube videos!
Ah, the old days.
@exploringhistory5796
I worked there in the early 90s. I remember those jackets and the hats…we were always tossing hats in with orders. A hat was all it took to make a customer happy!
@Wayland-j5s
They used to give away hats and T-shirts all the time. I still have a hat that is still in the plastic bag. It's been a long time since they have done that.
@dougjack7522
There is no more premium yet the customer is expected to pay extra by tipping everyone for doing there job
@cookies6915
In fact, tipping is just an evil tactic used by businesses to shift conflicts and costs onto others.
@marktatum2592
The service station that my dad always went to in the 1960's-'70's ( The place that checked your oil cleaned your windshield and gave you a bathroom key with a small hubcab attached to it) would occasionally give away stuff - road maps, key chains etc.
One month it was monogrammed coffee cups.
You picked out your free cup out of a pyramid of coffee cups with your first initial on it after a fill-up.
@candyrobinson3637
I just saw an air pump at a gas station that only took credit cards.
@NotExpatJoe
Gas station near me has one of those air pumps. I go inside, tell them I don't have a credit card, and they flip a switch to turn the pump on for me. I've done this at least half a dozen times so far.
@HansensUniverseT-A
When i was a kid, one of the manufacturers here in Norway made chewing gum, it had a sticker and a temporary press on tattoo wrapped around it, the packaging said nothing about it, just one of those little gifts they didn't need to put there but it was that little extra special that truly made a difference and has stuck with me since.

When you buy certain brands of beer in South Korea there is a pack or nuts attached to the top of the can, which I thought was a fabulous idea.
@CurtisSchukei
Every gas station had free air! Green stamps, glasses and dish promotions and Service! Let's go back!

I bought an Amazon Chinese replacement pull starter assembly for my gas water pump. Just $10.99 and it came with the premium extras of mounting screws, rubber gloves, and a nice wrench too!
@brianevans6819
I remember the days of painting valve covers or a water pump for a customer when we replaced it.
Sometimes if we had to do a big job for a customer, like a head gasket, we would wash and vacuum out their car.
In the days of flat rate, that ain't happenin'
@markr478
We vacuumed the car and washed all windows inside and out. When we did an oil change (that cost 12$)
@AlejandroRamirez-vl8mr
I remember when washing cars, whatever change I found while vacuuming I left in the center console or the ash trays. Every time they would leave me a tip
Edit: Forgot to add, if I ever have to take my car to get washed, I purposely leave some coins under the seats to see if the guy does the same or pockets it. If he takes the change I'm not coming back.
@cavecookie1
When I was a high school kid in the early '70s, the gas station I worked at, we vacuumed, washed the windows and cleaned out the ash trays with every service job. Standard service back in those days, everyone did that.
@MaxNafeHorsemanship
Remember the day??? I just retired a couple months ago and I would paint every part I took off and put back on. I would detail the engine compartment on an engine swap. That got me a $100 tip.
@kludgeaudio
The company in Guangzhou that does prototype PC boards for us used to send keychains and little promotional items. I mentioned to the rep that I liked that and they said they sent them to customers abroad and sent tea to the Chinese customers. So I asked if they could send me tea instead and.... it's not spectacular but I always look forward to a little package of oolong with my prototype runs.
@rchydrozz751
What I didnt like was cork oil pan gaskets. My new mid 70's Ford had them. Within just a few years, oil dripping on the driveway. Crawled under there, bolts were just finger tight. You couldn't snug them down too much it would crush and crack the cork gasket. Replaced it with the newer rubber gasket, while I was at it, also ditched the cork valve cover gaskets that were also starting to leak.
@antonchigurh981
Private Equity is killing America. Every time i turn around im finding out a brand I've used for decades is now owned by Private Equity.
Then the price goes up, the quality goes down the shitter, and the customer service is akin to them telling you to beat it.
@geoffsingleton9248
Then, there's a good chance that they've loaded the company with debt and they go broke and disappear after a few years.
@Bondodon1849
I worked at a gas station in the late 60's and a customer asked how much we charged for oil change. I said there was no labor charge, only charge for oil and oil filter. The next day the guy comes back and wants an oil change and wanted me to use the oil he had just purchased at K-Mart. He was surprised when I told him there would be a labor charge if we used his oil and he couldn't understand that. True story!
@charlesdyer2376
I was in the auto body business ainse the 60's , and I can remember the salesman would come around with free sticks, and strainers for painting , and hats , and so forth , today forget it you pay for everything .

I agree brother... i remember buying gasket sets back in the day with spiffs in them.. like the little screw in gasket/oil pan holders that made aligning the pan and gasket so much easier.. and held it up while you started the oil pan bolts.. and countless other examples..

My father built an air compressor with parts out of the local dump using a 10 pound propane tank and a motor and compressor out of a old freezer in the 70’s When he passed I was cleaning out the house and garage plugged it in and it worked perfectly still 40 years later

Whe I sell stuff I always toss in a few extra items, could be a sticker or cup holder with a logo, could be an extra (the version they did not order) part if they order 12. But I always toss something extra in the box.

I rattled canned a LOT of valve covers back in the day. If we had to remove the valve covers for any service (valve lash, gaskets, etc.) We'd throw 'em in the hot tank for a short bit while we did repairs, rinse 'em off and give 'em a quick spritz with the proper color.
@FrankDeMaria-te2ee
This is so true. I'm from the generation that did that. I still do that when I ship out my packages.
@pookatim
I am older than you and I remember. I used to pump gas (every gas station was full service) and we would automatically clean your windshield and ask if you wanted your oil checked. If they wanted the oil checked we would check the oil, and the brake fluid. If they needed brake fluid, we would just put some in, no charge. When we did an oil change we checked all fluids, greased everything that needed grease and adjusted the brakes (self-adjusting brakes weren't a thing yet).
@andrewwasson6153
Good video and good reminder. I remember when a “Bakers Dozen” was always 13. I remember the air lines at the service station. I don’t recall free oil changes; I worked at a shop doing oil changes and transmission services when I was fresh out of high school in the early 80’s. We would do a no charge inspection, while we were working just in case something was going to be a problem down the road for the customer. When I worked in a radio shop, we vacuumed out the vehicles and used floor mats; the idea was that we left the car in better shape than when it arrived.

Never be too quick to blame the Chinese for crap quality products. Often it's the American importer looking for the lowest bid.
You get what you pay for. Import the cheapest POS you can get, and mark it up as if it was premium quality. Greed, and no business ethics has gotten us where we are today.

I recently experienced this when I ordered a product from Thailand. I bought a pair of 14" Michelin Men for my truck and they included a very small Michelin man meant for inside the truck. It wasn't mentioned as part of the purchase, it was just thrown in as an extra gift. It made me very happy.

I remember getting those small screwdrivers with carb parts and little wrenches for specific things. Remember the 3/16" thick set of open end wrenches, that came in sizes up to 7/8". They fit into the tightest spots. I had almost a whole set of them. All were premiums with things I bought.

Totally agree with you. I was a tech at a dealership in the 90's and we have a couple of guys that would wash the customer's car for free after we're done working on them.
I've also order tools from Amazon and a few of them did come with gloves as an extra. Really nice of them.
I have a 3 ton floor jack I got from HF that's around 30 years old. Never leaked and I'm still using it.
