I'm a Vietnamese, so I'm also a "foreigner" to Chinese people, but I do dislike the 2010 version. The 2010 film added unneccessary modern values and "characterization" that it feels more like a fanfic of a conspiracy theorist than an adaptation. It's like trying to make The Lord of The Rings in the style of Game Of Thrones

2010 is simply more accessible to more casual audiences. For years you could find the entire 2010 series on YouTube with subtitles. It also had a limited dvd run at a time before streaming took precedence.

I came from Indonesia. And imho, it was mainly due to the visual. Both series have over 50 episodes and I don't have plenty of leisure time to watch 2 series with similar stories. So I had to choose between the two and I picked the newest one mainly due to its better graphics.
Also, I once browsed about the series. What I found was that the 2010 series was quite a success with revenue 4-5 times compared to its production budget. So this is news for me that it was considered the worst series in China.

Emm…… maybe the main reason is those characters are not the similar to historical figures. For instance, Zhu Geliang was wise and confident in Chinese eyes, not always worried or depressed like 2010 three kingdoms shows.

I mean that's why it is so appealing to me.
I read Sanguo Yanyi about three times. I think most of us on this subreddit are very familiar with the period. This community has played all the games, seen the movies, the Manhwas- everything we can get our hands on outside of China.
So when there's a fresh take or a new perspective, it feels like experiencing it for the first time.
I also think the west in general holds cultural stories to be a lot less 'sacred'. You can see the big trend now is to 'reimagine' old stories. Wicked is a big example.

I think CN young people these days are pretty open to the “remake” of the stories (if you only know how many novels or fanfics there on 3K, not to mention that Koei games are always so popular). Most of them are critical to Luo Guanzhong’s writing as well. But even so they find 2010 version to be pretty bad. My personal observation is that it definitely has something to do with different cultural values, what CN audience and foreign audience perceive to be good acting, and very importantly - the understanding of CN language. Sometimes there’s this fundamental gap in perception between the person perceiving a culture outside of it and the person living in it (as a Chinese I simply cannot bring myself to say that the 2010 TV series is a good one despite seeing the other side’s comments )

Go visit Bilibili or Zhifu and you'll find tons of channels talking about how the show has suffered from historical and geographical inaccuracies, writing, literature and linguistic problems, terrible acting, repetitive bgm and stunts, bad attitude from director, writer and casts etc, and most of the time these channels are correct on what they've said since they people who made these vids have made thorough analysis of the the novel, historical data, as well as clear insights on different details instead of being mere ragebaiters, and you'll see why people in China hate this show.

'Historical and geographical inaccuracies?'
It's based off the Romance! They can't criticise the show for that. Luo Guanzhong was no more committed to historical or geographical accuracy.
Case in point: Guan Yu escapes Cao Cao's service at Guandu by riding through *Luoyang*, dozens of miles *north* when Liu Bei was, at the time in Runan, ***south*** of Cao Cao's garrison.
Also 'walls of ice'.
You don't get a wall of ice by dripping water on soil and leaving it overnight...
You just don't.

举个例子：关羽在官渡离开曹操时，骑马经过了洛阳，那是在北边几十英里外，而刘备当时明明在曹操驻地南边的汝南。
还有那个“冰墙”。
你不可能靠往土上滴水晾一夜就弄出一堵冰墙……真弄不出来。

While it's true that the novel suffers from historical and geographical inaccuracies, 2010 TK receives more criticism because of how the writer and director keep emphasizing that they were going to "depict real history", but then proceed making tons of historical and geographical mistakes which wer considered worst than the novel itself.

Similar to some Chinese like western stuff touching the surface of the history itself. Appreciation of another culture is a passion and I think passion is something admirable about.
PS: I'm not from China, but I can bridge the 2 culture pretty easily from my background.

I think most of the foreigners will start reconsidering their views on the 2010 show should they find the problems behind these lines(and more of the lines which I didn't mention here). I (also foreigner) also dont understand why. I think 1994 version is clearly superior but maybe part of it is nostalgia speaking.
What 1994 did better:
- iconic music
- more grounded fight scene (personal taste)
- better overall casts (ex kong ming, guan yu, zhang fei)
- better art direction (not everything is black and grey)
- no corny sound effect
- overall more true to the novel, and less cut scene
- went through the end of the period
What 2010 did better:
- more characterization of certain characters (cao cao, cao pi,  liu bei, sima yi) though not necessarily true to the novel.
- better ending implementation
- i guess more epic battle? But personally I prefer real actors than cgi

- 拍到了时代的终结
2010版做得更好的地方：
- 对某些角色有更多的刻画（曹操、曹丕、刘备、司马懿），虽然不一定符合原著。
- 结局的呈现方式更好。
- 战斗场面可能更宏大？但我个人更喜欢真人实拍而不是特效。

I did mention in one of my posts that old shows from the 1990s were more authentic because the production team even researched what windows back then looked like to how dusty the clothes were. It ofc didn't look fancy like most current dramas that look more shining and cities look clean like a tourist attraction. However, it was more authentic because that was how 3rd-century China was supposed to look. And for dramas featuring the Qing Dynasty, I heard they even cast former servants, eunuchs who were basically the Wikipedia of how everyone should have behaved in the Imperial court. The 1994 version was indeed better when it comes to source materials (the novel), but 2010 is better imo when it comes to characterizations of Cao Cao, Liu Bei, and Sun Quan. It makes Cao Cao more humane, and I like the extra details of Cao Cao's relationship with his subordinates as well.

It lack focus and speed pass event. The audience barely get to know the late characters before it was over. It is an understandable constraint given the series is already very long.

Good pacing (at least, at first) memorable characters, etc, if you think of it as a standalone story inspired by the 3 kingdoms era then it’s pretty good.
It was trying to be an “authentic” mix of romance and records, rather than an “accurate” depiction of either one.
Hyper emphasising main warlords and over-emphasising their unique traits: good guy Liu bei, Cao Cao the schemer, yuan shao the powerful and foolish, etc.
It’s a very easy watch as a first intro to the 3 kingdoms, as a result, even if it’s oversimplified and often inaccurate.
I really liked it as my my first intro, though I know a bit from playing “3 kingdoms total war” and “ dynasty warriors, my mum and my wife, and some of my friends, enjoyed it but it drags on in the latter half of the show.
For what it’s worth I’ve heard that a lot of non Chinese found that watching 2010 made them know enough to appreciate 1994.
TLDR 2010 is more approachable to a foreign audience that knows little about the setting.
Also, I was aware going in that director fuckups (literally, he picked a different scxt stack each day) had serially mischaracterised some characters, so I was braced for this as fiction rather than history.

作为了解三国的入门作品，尽管它过于简化且经常出错，但看起来非常轻松。
 
我确实非常喜欢这部入门作。虽然我通过玩《全战：三国》和《真三国无双》了解了一些背景，我家人朋友也挺喜欢看，但后半部分确实有点拖沓。
值得一提的是，我听说很多外国人在看完2010版后，才有了足够的知识储备去欣赏94版。
长话短说：2010版对那些完全不了解背景的外国观众更友好。
而且，我进去看的时候就知道导演不太靠谱（听说他每天随机选剧本拍），导致很多角色人设崩塌，所以我已经做好了把它当虚构小说而非历史来看的心理准备。

I am a Vietnamese and I never bother to watch the 2010 version. Too many things I dislike: the excessive portrayal of CaoCao, the cheesy romances etc.
I used to love Chinese historical dramas but they have started going downhill since adopting the unrealistic western style body armor and helmet for literally EVERYONE and rely more and more on CGIs for large scale battle in the 2010s. A few series are still watchable though (Legend of Sui and Tang, Chu Han contention).
But then they start using feminine actors and clothes to play generals...thats it for me.

We're not exactly 'foreigners' if we watch Three Kingdoms at home in our own countries. We'd have to actually ***go*** to China and watch it to be foreigners.
And to answer your question, most of us feel like the 2010 version has more nuance. Characters feel more real and relatable. I enjoy watching scenes from the 1994 version but the 2010 version makes me want to actually keep watching.
I get why people like the 1994 version but it just feels too over-the-top and outdated for us to really keep up with it. Much like the Romance, it's too black-and-white in terms of morality, plans and motivations aren't focussed on, we're never really given enough depth for us to understand what all these people are fighting for.
There are definitely some good scenes in the 1994 version (The Emperor's Hunt is a favourite) but I want to watch a show which does stuff ***differently*** to the Romance. Because the Romance is old and when you're making an adaptation of an old work, you need to upxe it to give your audience the intended pathos.

Chinese Diaspora here.
It's a take on the period.  There are parts of it that is strong, and there are parts that are weak.
What I find astonishing is just how much knee-jerk hatred it seems to get- no one is looking at 2010 and saying "OH THIS IS THE GREATEST THING EVER."  I can't even think of anyone on bilibili or zhihu who hates the 94 original (which I grew up with my Grandfather watching) the same way self proclaimed fans hate on the 2010 one.  It's honestly kind of cringe.
This is a period of history and media that has been a part of popular culture zeitgeist for 1800 years.  If it gets non-Asians interested, I'll take it.  And if their interest is genuine, they can explore the literally thousands of other pieces of media, many of which are much better.

The production values are higher (or at least technology is better) and we don’t notice the historical inaccuracy-it’s a rare Westerner who could tell a Han from a Tang dynasty song.
Also the more irreverent, emotional tone may be closer to our own attitudes about our own history?

It was very easily accessible in comparison to the 1994 series. Having watched the 1994 series now it is without a doubt the better series.

It's not like there's only one interpretation of the three kingdoms. People are already familiar with Dynasty Warriors, Ravages of Time, even anime Three Kingdoms like Soten Koro, etc which can be radical in its character depiction. So in my opinion, 2010 is not especially "sinful" or really butchering historical figures. It's simply another different depiction of the already 'a little different to history' novel.
I've watched both 1994 & 2010 but not recently so I don't remember the details. But I remember some battles or events being present in one series but not the other, with both series having their own cases of missing contents. So those kinds of nitpicks aren't deal breakers for me. There's something to enjoy in both series. Also Chen Jianbin.
Though I gotta be honest in that 2010 is more of my comfort series because of the more modern audio-video quality. Plus I like a cunning Liu Bei.
 
《三国》又不是只有一种解释方式。大家早就熟悉了《真三国无双》、《火凤燎原》，甚至是像《苍天航路》这样人物刻画非常激进的动漫。所以在我看来，2010版并没有什么不可饶恕的罪过，也不是在糟蹋历史人物。它只是对那部本来就“不太符合史实”的小说的另一种演绎。

I love Romance of the Three Kingdoms, it was one of the earliest things I learned about Chinese history when I was a kid, introduced through the Dynasty Warriors games initially. The 2010 show is entertaining and fun to watch. A bunch of actors in there that I've seen in subsequent shows so it's cool to see them as younger selves.

Accessibility. I love the 94 series, but it’s a lot like getting into One Piece. It’s daunting to start. You can tackle 2010 in a decent bite, but 94 is a big commitment. The difference between eating a steak and eating a whole cow.

When Game of Thrones started fizzle out for me after s6 I yearned for something new and found the Three Kingdoms 2010 series and having watched plenty of movies with Chinese or asian casts (Like Forbidden Kingdom, Curse of the Golden Flower, Red Cliff, Crouching Tiger and Fearless) I imediately fell for the show and having been a big lover of the Three Kingdoms period, the Games made by Koei Tecmo and other sources it wasnt hard to make me a fan.
It has much to do with the fact that it looks modern, which is why I myself overlooked the show's flaws, such as mischaracterizations. The soundtrack, intro, and outro also made me emotional every time.
This comes from an Indigenous American Native.

It's my first contact with Three Kingdoms. Even if it might not be the best adaption it's still an extremely fun and entertaining show imo.
I really, really like 2010 Cao Cao, Sima Yi.
It's like even if you like history you can still enjoy Braveheart or Troy as a movie, disregarding it being a terrible adaptation.
Three Kingdons is much more ingrained in Chinese culture that they are much more sensitive to changes and inaccuracies in adaptions than us foreigners. But I understand why 2010 is disliked because I have a similar issue with King Arthur adaptations.

The Three Kingdoms period is pretty much the only period of Chinese history Americans get exposed to. To our media China had the Three Kingdoms period. The Yuan Dynasty or Mongol period and then we saved yChina from the Japenese in WWII only to have it become an economic enemy.
The 1994 series feels a lot like the first season of Power Rangers in terms of filming style and by 2010 a lot of the series feels like a Western director could have shot it.

It was the only widely accessible version in English online.
Chinese cinema is not respected in the west. We all know it is really goofy and that is part of its charm.
It is filmed much closer to Western standards than most Chinese cinema.
Some of the flaws, like the Chinese dialogue, are not apparent to western fans.
Despite the obvious flaws of the series it is actually good.

2010 Cao Cao is more pragmatic. Other warlord characters are potrayed more conspiratorial than 1994 version, it look like they are closer to politicians in real life.

For me, I only had the movie Red Cliff and that Andy Lau Zhao Yun movie.  I think it was Resurrection of the Dragon or something like that.   For me both of those movies were fun to watch but were so far off from the novel that it just didn't feel right.    Then I found the 2010 series on YouTube and loved it.   I tried watching the 1994 series but it felt so outdated I just couldn't get into it.

Im a hua ren. After my introduction to 3 Kingdoms through Dynasty Warriors, the 2010 show was the most accessible to me because it WAS available on YouTube. Chinese historic dramas aren't popular in the west. So it's also most likely a lot of the western audience 1st Chinese historic drama show. So there's no other show for comparing

Well, I only got into it, bc I loved playing dynasty warriors as a kid. The faction, I always played with was Shu. And my favorite was Guan Yu. The more I learned about the history, in my opinion, I really like Cao Cao. Even though he did a lot of bad things. And I like every faction now lol. 2010 series, I really liked the modernization and the acting. Alot of funny scenes like when lui bei threw the baby. Kong Ming was great lol. I like when he went to Wu and pretty much owned every adviser over there . Also don't worry you don't offend me calling me "foreigner." We love your history, culture, and food .
