A US warship in the Straits is a sitting duck at the moment. No sense in putting up a multi billion dollar strike group to protect a merchant ship. Until every possible source of ship to ship missiles is destroyed the US will keep blockading the exit.
Don’t forget that Iran screwed themselves by mining the Straits. They rely heavily on on them to export oil for currency needed to trade, and for importing food, refined petroleum, and other things. Even if Iran wasn’t threatening merchant shipping with missiles none of it is willing to brave the minefield.

We should be using A-10s to patrol the straight of Hormuz. They can carry huge loads, loitering for long periods of time and are less expensive to operate. Have a couple of go fasts to help protect the A-10s and a refueling plane plus some helicopters and I think you can protect things pretty well.
