Many years ago, I can't even remember exactly when I began to subscribe to your channel when it only had a dozen subscribers. It's been my pleasure to witness your evolution, from sharing your life story to your temporary disappearance and eventual return. I don't know if you've noticed, but there's a profound shift in your eyes: I've watched them transition from helplessness and confusion in the early days to the resilience and wisdom they hold today. I hope you're doing well. Best wishes from Canada.

In the first installment of the Yip Man feature series, the man beat up ten contenders, and when the army general came down and asked his name, he replied "I'm just a Chinese (person)" He took home his reward, two bags of rice, because he was living in poverty. But he didn't want the spotlight.
Yes it's a movie & that scene is likely fictional. But it felt to me like it's a typical Chinese thing to do, or perhaps I would say Asian.
I don't know about the extent of vision or ambition of some of the figures more involved in the government. But if taking the position of a "world leader" means it would tempt the country to practice power abuse, or worse, end up being somewhat a successor of US as we currently know, the number one global antagonist for the lack of better word, then it's probably better for China to skip the honor. Someone else wants to fill the gap, there would be no envy.
Of course being pacifist doesn't mean there are no lines you cannot cross. People have all the rights to combat disinformation, tell the facts from their side. Other than that I'm not sure what is there to be ambitious about. Just be economically strong, which in turn militarily strong, but without being a døuche in multilateral diplomatic relationship. But this is from me and I'm not politician so maybe I don't aim high.

It would probably be fair to point out that there are two ways of being "red" (and they aren't necessarily mutually exclusive); one is uncritical loyalty to the party line, and the other is approaching China's economic policies from a perspective of "orthodox" Marxist thought. Enfu Cheng from the Chinese Institute for Marxism has focused some of his work on comparative studies, including property models and the overall mode of production. The CPC has coined their own term of socialism, "Socialism with Chinese Characteristics", that introduces the currently existing model of mixed ownership of the productive means (private and state). An orthodox socialist society in an advanced stage would require virtually full collective ownership. It remains to be seen if the CPC aims to realize this, and will remain steadfast in its approach. But what can be said with certainty is, so far the Dengist mixed ownership model has been tremendously effective. And despite critics from the left calling this approach "capitalist restoration", so far the party has been able to prevent a full government takeover by capitalist class interest (as exemplified with Tencent or Alibaba).

I have always thought Ip Man exhibits the Chinese characters in many ways. Kudos for mentioning it. Many thugs approached him for a fight, but he was not interested to fight them. Not until there was no more room to back up, then he was forced to fight.

Something about party members: they live with their feet on the ground and their head on their shoulders. Because that's how their party operates.

@donatwu3128
Nathan, you have made a fabulous speech with good intention. Having said that, you have approached the topic with a westerner's psyche which is different from that of Chinese civilization & philosophy. China has no interests in pursuing for the World no. 1 Leader position. It just strives to work to a world position it deserves which is commensurate with its strength, moral & grace. It knows that spending specific efforts & huge funds to take the world leadership like what US does is never sustainable in the long term. As long as it develops & maintains its impressively strong national strength matching with time & treats other countries (big or small) fair & sincere, (& sometimes with benevolence), others will naturally be able to appraise the true China & befriend China accordingly. Afterall, most if not all countries only look for self-interests & not eternal friendships, & China is not concerned about that because it always ensures that its pool of friends is always huge enough to reduce the negative effect of any friend acting unfriendly. That is why China only establishes partnerships, but never any alliance & never works with any partner for the purpose of aiming at a third party. In any case, you are a good man, Nathan.

@stupidwars88
Good analysis. China has done a great job keeping out the negative and destructive forces but it now needs to embark on a new phase. More open integration with the world. China with its unique community-driven system that also incorporates competition and the positive aspects of capitalism is a model many in the global south and even developed world can study and adapt to their own cultural norms. And its simple but brilliant foreign policy of win-win, restraint, respect, non-interference and cooperation in contrast to western hegemonic, zero-sum strategies is winning everywhere. China's soft power is undeniably growing and its future is bright.

"What a time to be alive!" When I was little, I didn't even have proper toilet paper. I mean, I thank my predecessors for the comfy life I enjoy. If there are "wars" to fight that cannot be avoided, WHAT A LIFE.

@yiluis1316
For the young audience, the donghua industry (animation industry) just needs to push as hard as the japanese does, and with time gradually people will start to appreciate further more the Chinese culture, social values and even political views if done correctly.
And with that, I would expect that more and more people would be more interested about knowing the truth about China's modern history from the western media defamation.

@boonchongsim8926
So much agreed to you, China should examine all their red tapes and officially provide the correct info or their sides of stories to the public, especially allow the debates to stir up within the China, and endorse the findings into the school textbooks..

Nothing is perfect. There are always a lot of things for China to improve. But it's better for China not to bite too much to chew.

@Moon-Birdy
Chinese are focusing on improving ourselves, we don't desire to be the leader, but we do offer help to country who needs it

@KaiserHooray
Nathan, please recommend books and other kinds of literature one can read to better know and understand Cn. Thank you!
I agree wholeheartedly about the communication issue, especially international journalism. Too many outlets (especially in HK) rely on western news agencies and just parrot western reports. As Brian Berletic outlined, this has been the US Empire's unmatched superpower: the dis/information space. He stressed that Cn must help other countries regain their sovereignty in that space.

@GangMi-g3d
I have the same urge as Rich's - China should have spent more to counter the unjust, unfair, even disdainful remarks on Internet. However, the best way to silence the noise is to work harder to live a better life.

@Ahda108
Agree..the old mentality just keep your head down n do your own thing should be lifted n stand up and apeaking for yourself loudly if not louder than those anti- China talking heads!

@Elfan97-ec1uk
It may not be China's intention to be the global leader but because of the immense success it's achieved in almost all realms of development China will find itself being the global leader very soon! I hope our Chinese leadership could take your advice on improving itself on its weaknesses as you're seeing the world with a Western perspective ! Thanks Nathan again for speaking out for my country when its leadership should probably take on a more active role! I look forward to a whole new world in which everyone shares the prosperity n harmony we all work so hard for!

@markmahan38
I agree full heartedly with you Nathan. Only by demonstrating for all to see by observeable means. Will any country get the hearts and minds behind them. Collectivism is the only way to progress, evolution, and a prosperous future.

@abies2000
I'm also excited about the possibilities of China demonstrating that human civilization's cycles of skewed boom and bust can be outsmarted artfully. Replace "global leadership" concepts with "avoiding reactionary chaos" concepts, and your take is a happy thought to me.

@violetviolet888
7:00 Why? Because of culture . As a Chinese, what you need to understand—which is almost impossible for Westeners to comprehend—is that China's people are raised culture that is opposite of ego . Too educate and promote China in the ways you perceive requires Ego. China will lead by example and action, not by ego.

@janelee3130
Nathan, I totally agree with you. China must improve its outward communication strategy by changing its communication style from High context to be Low context when speaking to the world. (Ref: In low context cultures, words convey most of the meaning. In high context cultures, meaning is conveyed by more subtle verbal and non-verbal cues. )

@peterelliott2914
I think the recent raft of visa free countries is a good start to improving outward communication. It's led to an explosion of free edvertising on social media.

@wizardy6267
Not really, before the prosperity time really coming, there are two major economic entities trying their best to stopping China achieving its goal. Japan and Taiwan. Until those two entities either fallen or turning nothing really changed

@shiva.shiver
The comments on here are very telling of the humble but proud nature of the Chinese. They don't want to be pushed around and are not afraid to stand up for themselves when faced with bullying, but they also don't aspire to be the global leader who would tell others what to do. They believe in a live and let live mentality.

@jacku8304
It is very difficult for China to be able tell the world its own story. I see every day all kinds of purposeful distortion of China mostly left unchallenged. Many recent events, China would prefer to remain quite and hope it would pass unnoticed. As espected the other country involved would be the first to announce to the world and accused China of wrong doing. It will take days for China to reply and in a very antiquated Chinese way. The Chinese government has to understand the modern way of strategizing reply or releasing of information. It should learn from Trump's way of slandering or issuing unapologetic clear replies.

@thomasrogers9146
AS A HUMAN BEING WHO'S LIFE AND TIME ON THIS plaNET IS LIMITED I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT WE HUMANS CAN NOT JUST LIVE TOGETHER WORK, COLLOBORATE WITH EACH OTHER FOR THE GOOD OF ALL HUMANITY. BECAUSE IN THE END WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE

@reverz9688
Why China should take the world leader role? Maybe what China wants is being strong enough to avoid any external invasion that happend in its Qing dynasty meanwhile continuing leveraging poverty or prosperous status domestically

@毛熵易
Becoming a global leader has great benefits, but it is also a curse. Just look at the United States to know this. China has absolutely no intention of taking on this role, after all, it is already difficult to support the livelihoods of 1.4 billion children at home. China will only take on the important role of maintaining international order. Its goal is to develop itself well, so that it no longer breaks and is bullied.

@LetGo44
Nathan's observation of China's often ineffective international communication efforts is spot on. A big challenge for China. I wish there were a solution to that. China is probably not keen to become a world leader, though. But the US sees China as a threat; this can be changed. I see a lot of Americans, Canadians, and Australians start to celebrate after the dramatic Trump statement to pause all the tariffs, but hike the tariffs on China to 125%. Unfortunately, we are in a world with huge and unresolvable conflicts.
