Smart, but solar won't cover everything. I'd recommend they look into 'wood gas' stoves that burn more efficiently using resources they have (ie twigs, wood, etc). There are designs online and they are fairly easy to make. Better to use one of those than a traditional fire.
Also, look into wood gas-powered vehicles. It's a bit of pain compared to gasoline-powered ones, but it's what many in Europe had to power cars and trucks during WW2.

Grids have to be modified to handle on-grid solar. Off-grid solar requires some form of batteries, a significant increased cost. This will not be as simple a transition as just buying panels. I very much applaud their efforts.

It's pretty dire. Our church's feeding ladies have to start at dawn with neighborhood made charcoal and with limited transportation, some folks don't get fed. If you know anyone who makes trips there or does mission work, they can really use those small solar hand chargers for their phones. Someone please tell that brother that he needs to be using a torque wrench when tightening down solar panels. Overtorque can be a real problem. Panel and fastener manufacturers publish torque specifications.
You guys are smart, installing Solar, no doubt. You get some brutal storms so please be mindful of proper racking. Install the right panels on the right racks and attach properly to the roof.
