Join me in one of the coldest places on Earth, where China has built the world’s first autonomous mining truck fleet. Operating entirely without drivers, without breaks, and without complaints in minus 40 degree temperatures!
How do they cope in weather colder than Antarctica?
How smart are these vehicles really?
And could this technology one day help humans explore Mars?
Let’s find out! Do you think China's self-driving electric mining trucks will one day actually be sent to Mars?

I'm amazed at how quick China can steal technology. I was in AUS with the same systems, rio tinto almost 20 years ago. no matter how hard you defend your designs there's no one better for stealing and cliaming its there own (bar wall street). I must have worked with 3 companies that went under once China stole their designs.
@Ray-tc5zc
@aaronsof As someone currently in the Australian telco space with a history in mining tech, I find your perspective completely outdated and baseless. The tech existed 20 years ago you referred to is almost irrelevant to current systems, it's remotely relevant on concept only at most. It sounds like you're just echoing US talking points about Chinese IP theft rather than looking at the actual engineering.
There are many lies in your statement but let me just get into one: In 2005, Australia still had 2G (GSM) network, how on earth it enabled autonomous driving trucks? The ones in the video are operating under 5Ga (5G Advanced) network in one of the most remote areas in China, the 5Ga is called 5G Standalone in Australia and it is not even available in Sydney in Jan2026! To this day your 5G network is technically still a 4G/5G hybrid, even China let you copy exactly what they do there, you still are NOT able to, let alone 20 years ago!
Your statement is like saying to a modern car maker that they stole your technology because you came up with the concept of a horse buggy first!
@ipfreak
@aaronsof are you saying AUS had those sensors, 5G base stations, and other systems/technologies that facilitate those drone trucks 20 years ago? guess calling you as a liar would be an understatement...

@aaronsof In the history of humanity, every nations and civilizations have learned from each other. This century and the following ones will not be any exception.
Sometimes the copy does not surpass the original sometimes it does.
It's a shame I never heard about the Australian designs as a French, I guess marketing matters.
Good day.

@user-znick87
Actually, you forgot to mention the most important point, which is also a key reason why this project can proceed from a cost-effectiveness perspective—the location of open-pit coal mining is often higher than the location of the delivered storage.
Therefore, when a truck climbs up to the mining area empty and descends to the storage location fully loaded, a large portion of the electrical energy can be regenerated, reducing the truck's electrical energy consumption to a very low level.

I can't believe that's in the same general area with the beautiful grasslands and forests with black chipmunks during summer of whenever it was in Stuart's past videos on Inner Mongolia ! If he didn't stand next to it, I would have never guessed that each truck wheel was the size of an adult male, too! I feel like that would also be so useful at beaches for building sand berms or clearing debris from landslides

There are a couple of tech revolutions that have happened in my life that I was super happy to see. One was the transition from physical media to digital. Another was truly mobile, wireless earbuds. And another, which has yet to happen but is in early transition, is a fully automated transportation grid. You get in your car and it self-drives to your work, freeing up time for you to work or sleep. The car communicates with every car on the road through a centralized system. All cars move at the same speed, lane merges are done seamlessly, road rage, traffic jams, and speeding are eliminated or significantly reduced, and travel speeds can be increased due to autonomous road conditions.

Here the financial manager, actually the cost for salaries in many companies is only 2 percent even below it from gross income, in fact the largest is from raw materials that must be repurchased that's about 60% of the cost, not including electricity, utilities, taxes and others
So employee salaries are not actually the main problem

Even if China's planning a mars base by 2038 (first unmanned then inhabitted) carrying a whole mining truck to it will take a rocket of a size that dwarf anything ever made.
For the truck, and for the necessary lander that will have to be at least as heavy as the truck itself if not heavier. Saturn V could have possibly launched (if done) about 40 tons toward Mars, thoses trucks are about 60 tons, a rough guess would be that you'd need a rocket that could launch over 120 tons of payload toward mars, that's about 400 tons in LEO. I may be wrong about that i'm lazy starting doing any calculation, i know this sentence about mars is something of a little unserious joke, but that's interesting nonetheless.
Only one vehicle were ever conceptualized to carry over 400 tons of payload in LEO, and strictly in LEO, nothing else; the double shuttle designed, Boeing Space Freighter, an absolute monster on paper that never existed, combined, the rocket would have been 18.5 meters wide, and 154.4 meters tall, with a double wingspan of 79.9 meters (the space shuttle wingspan was "only" 23.79 meters), that's the kind of proportion that would be needed to bring an entire mining truck and it's lander to mars in one trip, without having to assemble it pieces by pieces once it get there.
Oh and whatever craft carrying it over there from the earth would most likely have nuclear powered engines to make the trip more fuel efficient and minimize the losses of fuel into space that naturally occur on all spacecraft, even if deactivated, no matter how thick the tank is (in fact fuel losses in space are even more problematic on large fuel tanks than on smaller ones).
