China's top universities are opening to foreign students. That's a big problem for US schools.

Chinese universities dominate the global rankings in hard sciences, Engineering, and Computer Science.
Many of them now accept international students, and are marketing their schools in foreign countries.
US schools already face serious financial challenges, from the steep decline in international student enrollment. Foreign families typically pay full tuition and room and board, and American colleges rely on those higher fees.
Chinese universities pose an existential problem, going forward. They are qualitatively superior, even in Western surveys. And the over cost of attendance is a mere tenth of going to a top American program.

35 years ago I taught industrial management in xianyang at the Northwest School of Light Industry. The school is no longer there. The terracotta soldiers were in an open field. The whole school had two cars and one telephone. Fellow teachers and their families lived in a single room dormitory. My two and a half day train trip to Urumqi was on a hard seat and we slept on the floor. The train engines were first electric, then a marvelous steam locomotive and across the desert by diesel-electric. The people were friendly, very curious, and the students studied very hard. I am absolutely astounded by the China you are showing me now.

Study at much better schools, with far better resources, far better prospects and overwhelmingly superior contacts and connections. All of that for the price of a month and 4 days at the old competitor. Yeah, we see where this is going, including me. China makes me getting a master's overseas actually feasible rather than a pipe dream I'd leave to my grand-grandsons.
China broke the US primacy in banking, in treasury bonds, artificial intelligence, chip making, military projects, logistics, and now they're aiming for education. The dragon has no tolerance left for the overgrown seagull.

As China's trade influence expands, Chinese universities will become more and more attractive to key trade and strategic partners. To students, most are more concern about how well recognized the university certificates are. So long as the certificates are recognized in their home country, China's international program (English curriculum available) would be attractive for them.

Just like China to want to export deflation in higher learning to the world, as well as export that learning to the world as well.

Many top Chinese universities have English speaking classes. Nevertheless for any foreign student going to China, they must learn Chinese, which some might consider a tall hurdle. But if one is qualified to study STEM in China, learning Chinese should not be a problem at all. Millions of Chinese kids have no problem learning Chinese either.

The US education scam is in trouble. If the US Federal government is forced to cut back spending then interesting things could happen to the highly subsidied education sector.

A few Chinese Universities do have programs taught in English for foreign students. Most Chinese universities teach in Mandarin. And if you want to work in China then Mandarin is the default language.

One of the best, most talented engineers I ever worked with got her degrees from Taiwan Technical University. This was over 20 years ago and I am sure the situation is even more lopsided now. When I retired from high technology i was heavily recruited to teach in China, in English. Due to a family situation I had to decline the offers. When I graduated from engineering university my school was in the top ten, now it is in the top 150. It didn't get worse, the rest of the earth got much better.

It has been noted for the last decade that universities in USA ARE NOT KEEping UP WITH LATEST SCIENTIFIC DATA. Profs refuse to teach any differently than the course material they've proffered for years. This system needs to be ignored & allowed to collapse.

I began my undergraduate studies at the University of Chicago 50 years ago. Tuition at that time was $3,210.00 per year. Adjusted for inflation, that would be $19,050.00 per year in 2025 dollars.
Current undergraduate tuition at that school is $71,325.00 per year. In other words, tuition at the University of Chicago has gone up by 3.75 times the rate of inflation. Do you think that is a problem? I certainly do.

Engineering degree from China is a must, daughter choose Edinburgh seven years ago the whole department particularly the Computer Science part was full of Chinese students who were excellent by the way and really made her step up in the work. Those same students she keeps meeting at trade shows as she struggles on a very ordinary wage with a Masters degree.

American public school kiddies can't read, write, compute, think critically. I've told all my friends that the only subject their kids and grandkids should concentrate on is math. Pursue engineering, whatever it takes. They look at me blindly. That would cut into their sports pursuits. We're lost.

Are any of the Chinese schools teaching in English? Because if they aren’t it’s going to take years for Mandarin education in schools around the world to catch up to the ubiquity of English programs in schools around the world. It might be a long time before there are enough Mandarin speaking foreigners to make this matter.

So you’re paying 10 times more to attend a lower quality US university than a Chinese university and when you include food, room and board, and medical care that cost could skyrocket to 16 times more to attend an American university over a Chinese university!

Sounds as if the Chinese universities are soon to accept the best foreign students on their campus but will they do what US schools do and soak them for money? Also sounds as if "foreign" does not include US students in this plan and maybe never will? In any case it spells doom to US schools.

Let’s just say we should send our kids to where the opportunities are and that clearly is Asia now. I’ve just finished an online meeting with my Canadian customer. He’s from Toronto and I’m here in China. He said everyone else he’s working with in US and Canada takes days and weeks to get back to him while my team here in China is 10 steps ahead of him. We just work harder here. I would rather my kids get good work ethics and habits here.
@0Mind-_-Bomb0
Another big issue is whether your child will survive the gun-toting trigger-happy life in the US. As a parent the safety of my child is something I think about daily, and I’m in East Asia. If I’m in the US, that anxiety will be elevated and I’ll need therapy.
@Jorge-xf7fv
Another thing to point out is that Chinese universities are not just cheaper, they actually often offer scholarships for foreign students.
If you take my country as an example, they are actually the biggest providers of scholarships for students coming from Switzerland.

Why pay more for a less advanced education in the U.S. when I can receive a more affordable and more advanced education in China? The same applies to electric vehicles: those made in China are more affordable and technologically advanced, while U.S.-made EVs are more expensive and less advanced.

Russia offers places at universities to talented kids from Africa and even has courses taught in English, though not in French, which might also be useful.
The picture of a new world is clear, except to those in the West.
@phils4634
The situation becomes even more dire when you realise their "second tier" Universities provide a better experience than the West's top tier. The level of staff / student engagement in China is far greater, and Chinese students go to University to STUDY, not fool around and have a good time. The West has already seen the consequences of this, and whilst Western Universities might be "ahead" in producing essentially Arts graduates, Science is where China currently excels, and the gap is widening.
@leochen887
It's clear that the U.S. is the high-priced leader in many/most areas of commerce and education and medicine and pharmacies and AI and weapon systems and so on and so forth. It's the reason that 70-80% of everything that we buy is labeled Made in China. It's the reason that China is the global manufacturer of choice and why we're drowning in a Rising Sea of Red Ink.
In the recent past, I've suggested that you may want to raise your children from birth in China, to become fluent in Mandarin and also able to read and write Chinese and identify themselves as American Chinese (or is it the other way around?)
Because, to be honest, China represents 2050 while we represent 2025.
@gelinrefira
The ironic thing is that if your kid do wants to study political science, they should be going to the country that is winning this century because obviously their political system is superior than the losers. Then they really should be learning Chinese and going to Chinese universities.
@Cobalt-88
80% of the top engineering (and computer science) universities in the world being in China? Not only that but faculty sizes are probably twice as large as our universities.China sure loves engineers (and hates lawyers)! I find that so amusing.
Not only that but competition to get into them is much tougher, so the quality of students is quite a bit higher. That is scary.
@nomdede
Given that the pace of new development in engineering is so fast in China, it seems unlikely that US engineering programs can remotely keep up. So you may be paying ten times more for an out-of-date degree, with no pipeline to internships with cutting edge companies, in a country where they’re kidnapping people without judicial warrants and people are dying while in detained…

US universities tell others the reason they do well is because of their outstanding lecturers and researchers. Well I say smart and hardworking students is very important too and those are likely foreign students from China but they won't admit

When life is good in a country. the young ones do not like to study hard subects in Engineering, Science and Maths. They normally go for soft and easy subjects like social science , psychology , marketing and economics. Hence factories in US hard to operate without engineering graduates.

The US university system has always been the secret weapon of US tech. It brought in foreign students and provided a pipeline into high tech jobs. Even soaking foreign students for 2-3x the cost didn’t keep them away. Looks like Trump has finally killed the golden goose.

Seven out of ten top universities in the world are Chinese universities, with Harvard University placed third behind two Chinese universities. It begs the question why Chinese students would still want to study in the US and UK, pay huge sums of money to sustain their universities and local economies, and in return, accused of spying and subjected to harassment by their border officials.

Parents have to remember.Their kids will be in a foreign country. And a lot of kids or young people don't really go or know the rules of other countries. And if they get in trouble, they're in a foreign country.
And nowadays, the world isn't doing so well and some the majority young people graduating out of college cannot get a job. I don't know where you're winning anywhere. Anymore, it's not looking good, not financially, not within the future.
Sad, isn't it everyone thinks they wanna win? But are we anywhere in the world.
