In China, the pace of life on Saturday nights is often relaxed and casual. With the high popularity of food delivery platforms and mobile payment, more and more families choose to solve a dinner with just a few taps of their fingers instead of walking into the kitchen. Recently, a video of a foreign blogger documenting an order for takeout in China has drawn attention on overseas social media platforms. It also showcases the convenience of digital consumption in China from a down-to-earth perspective.

In the video, the blogger said that they didn't want to cook that night, so they ordered a takeout through Alipay. On the home page of Alipay, users only need to enter the embedded mini-program to directly browse nearby restaurants, complete meal sextion, payment and delivery arrangements. It is worth noting that the platform also comes with a translation function and physical image display. Even if you do not understand Chinese, you can clearly understand the content of the dishes, which greatly lowers the usage threshold for foreign consumers.
This takeout order came from a Lanzhou beef noodle restaurant. I ordered a total of six dishes, including stir-fried Shanghai green, beef soup noodles, egg fried rice, Kung Pao chicken rice bowl, beef fried rice and braised beef noodles. The prices range from 18 to 31 yuan. Each dish is packaged in layers, with the soup and noodles separated, and the main course and rice stored separately, which not only ensures the taste but also facilitates transportation.
Specifically, the price of stir-fried Shanghai green tea is 23.69 yuan. The beef soup noodles cost 18.73 yuan. The egg fried rice is only 21.71 yuan. Kung Pao Chicken rice Bowl 23.69 yuan; The beef fried rice is also 23.69 yuan. The most expensive dish, braised beef noodles, costs 31.73 yuan. The total cost of six dishes is 148.51 yuan, which can meet the dinner needs of an ordinary family.

Against the backdrop of the current transformation of China's consumption structure and the continuous recovery of the service industry, such an affordable, diverse and efficient takeout meal is a microcosm of the maturation of China's takeout economy. Whether local residents or foreigners in China, they can all enjoy convenient, transparent and cost-effective daily consumption experiences in a highly digitalized living environment. This kind of "Chinese daily life" is also being seen by an increasing number of overseas audiences through social media.

it's best to use at least 2 accounts to place orders so u can use more coupons.
@Ohxiaoxuanzi
Chinese people usually get coupons first, which will be much cheaper.
@firstlast-pt5pp
This price is really reasonable. It only cost 21.33 US dollars. In the United States, just the service fee, delivery fee and tip would amount to this much!
@TheWorldnUs
Yes, you're right. It is not necessary to tip in China.
@BagelVsDonut
Yes, for me, the delivery fee alone is 10 dollars, unless you become a member. But I don't order takeout very often, so it's not cost-effective to become a member. Adding tips, taxes and other expenses, it's basically 20 dollars. Not to mention the food itself, on average, each dish usually costs 18 to 25 dollars.
It's so expensive. There should be a coupon. At least it could save one third of the cost.

Wow! That’s a huge difference. China is very affordable when it comes to food. It’s funny, some people in the comments say what we ordered was expensive.

This is about 1/5 to 1/6 of the cost in US when you factor in the delivery service charges

To be honest, the restaurant you picked might be pretty upscale. Generally speaking, budget-friendly restaurants could be 20–30% cheaper.

@TheWorldnUs I think the best way for you is to have a Chinese friend who speaks English, and then have them teach you how to save money on living and spending. That would be much easier than figuring it out on your own.
@Samewith47
I couldn't help but laugh. She actually spent 24 yuan on a plate of vegetables! Haha! That plate of vegetables was worth at most 10 yuan. The prices of everything else she ordered were double. I really don't understand why she would spend so much money on these things. Lanzhou noodles are a very cheap chain brand; she's actually not familiar with Chinese prices and doesn't know how to save money when shopping.

500g shangha green vegitables usually 2-3yuan in shanghai, so 20+ price deadlly high
@marvinfok65
Yeah, I was thinking about the same. Maybe the delivery charges add up quite a bit which is fair as the delivery guy needs a living wage too.
@ggk3121
@marvinfok65 delivery charges usually 4-5 yuan for a order. please notice 4-5yuan for a order not for a dish. so this price for a green vegetables absolutelly high

$21 is still very expensive for that portion of a meal for the average earner in China. Chinese usually spends around equivalent of $5 per person per meal.

Alright, I saw the end and realized you ordered these dishes at a “Lanzhou Beef Noodle” restaurant.
China has many regional cuisines, and different restaurants specialize in distinct flavors while offering value for money within their respective culinary traditions.
The situation with “Lanzhou Beef Noodle” restaurants is rather complicated:
1. Lanzhou Beef Noodles originated as a specialty from Gansu Province, but most “Lanzhou Beef Noodle” restaurants you see in the market are counterfeit. They're monopolized by people from neighboring provinces, so the taste is far from authentic. Generally, genuine Lanzhou Beef Noodle shops won't serve dishes from other culinary traditions. Only the counterfeit ones serve a hodgepodge of other dishes. So based on price and menu variety, the restaurant you visited is most likely a “fake” Lanzhou beef noodle place. Note: “fake” here doesn't mean the ingredients are unfit or unhealthy; it simply refers to the inauthentic flavor and unreasonable pricing.
2. Most of the dishes you order have nothing to do with authentic Lanzhou beef noodles. Some are Huaiyang cuisine, like fried rice. There are also Sichuan/Shandong dishes, like Kung Pao Chicken over rice. Potato and Beef Stir-Fried Noodles with Topping is a xinjiang dish.
3. Judging by the actual quality of the dishes, at least the Beef Noodle and Sichuan dishes were subpar, and their prices were significantly inflated. While fried rice is relatively simple to prepare and thus unlikely to vary greatly in flavor, it still seemed overpriced—both for its lack of authenticity and the quality of its ingredients. Especially Kung Pao chicken—for anyone who loves Sichuan cuisine, this kind of preparation is nothing short of criminal. That's the main reason I'm making these comments—it looks almost as bad as British cooking. As someone from xinjiang, I must also point out that potato and beef noodle stir-fry should use thicker handmade noodles, whereas this fake Lanzhou beef noodle shop uses generic noodles to cut costs. So I hope you can forgive and understand how utterly disheartening it is for a food enthusiast to see takeout like this. My current mood is like that of an Italian who just saw a durian pineapple pizza.
4. For a rice bowl dish, this price point paired with such a meager portion of stir-fried vegetables and meat is unreasonable—especially given the clearly inauthentic ingredients. If I were to receive such a rice bowl, I'd likely leave a negative review on the food delivery platform.
Thank you so much for your appreciation of China's food delivery and takeout systems. However, to help you save money and enjoy better meals, the above are merely suggestions, not criticisms.
For the same price, you can easily choose a better restaurant to enjoy more authentic Chinese cuisine, and the portions will be larger too.
And never order anything at a fake Lanzhou beef noodle restaurant. It's essentially the local version of American-style fake Chinese food.
Once again, thank you for your video.

@jettim912

@zhu_zi4533
He ordered at full price, without any set meals or coupons.
The reason the full price was high is because other platforms offer various discounts and coupons, a problem stemming from unfair competition among food delivery platforms in the past.
Merchants who don't raise prices are likely to lose money from such promotions.
Merchants who don't participate in the promotion will find it difficult to be promoted by external platforms.
@zhu_zi4533
Around 2019, the situation wasn't so complicated. It was very straightforward to order whatever you wanted and choose which store to go to.
Now, if you want to have two meals, you have to order them separately. If you want to have non-set meal items, you have to combine them into a set meal.
@zhu_zi4533
Besides, some platforms hide the "Collect" button very deeply, making it hard to find frequently visited stores.
So nowadays, some people simply use their collections as blacklists.

Making $300 a month is enough to buy a suicide box. Normal people usually earn around $800. In first-tier cities, it's at least $1,000. In terms of purchasing power, except for high-end electronic products, everything else can easily outperform other countries.
