They’re also less likely to kick you out of their business establishment over fear of miscommunication. I’ve never been denied service on the grounds of foreign nationality or poor language ability in years of living here but it seems to happen at least once per trip when I go to Japan.

Basically a metal detector for the passenger, a x-ray scan for bags, and bottle drinks also go through a hazmat scan.If you dont want your drink scan, they sometimes make you drink the bottle in front of them.

Yes it’s underrated and after visiting Japan I think it’s kind of a good thing. This way it feels like an adventure exploring everything. Enjoy it while it lasts.And you are damn right about the didis. Taking didi in cities without a metro is very convenient and the price is cheap.

The ancient Chinese gardens I saw in Suzhou were incredible and the town had a nice laid-back vibe to it...It was all very inexpensive...the hotels were brand new, safe and clean for less than $30 a night.Honestly, if China ever offers a Retirement Visa I would move there permanently in a heartbeat!

So true. China knows what’s up. They are doing some things right and we should take note. A lot of energy in their cities too. Doing some things wrong people will say….but that’s across the board for all countries. I become more of a fan the more I go there.

I ���agree with you! We just finished up two weeks in China and we're shocked at how amazing it was. We felt like the only Western tourists most of the trip. The i fostructure is great and the subways and train system across the board were in much better shape than in the US. I was also surprised at how clean everything was. People were kind and accommodating, and seemed genuinely happy we had chosen to visit China. Yes, outside pf Shanghai and Beijing there are probably not many western tourists.In GZ there were quiet a few tourist but many were from Russia or Southern asia. The few “westerners” were probably german or french or something taking advantage of their visa free entry.But barely any westerners from the anglosphere. I think theyre all here in Japan

I agree it's extremely underrated. Nonetheless I'd still recommend Japan or Taiwan over China to the casual traveller. Because:
 
A) language barriers. It's true Chinese people speak better English than Japanese , but on the flipside when language barriers go wrong they can go really wrong in China. Many things in China are a bit bureaucratic and relatively simple if you know intermediate Chinese, but insanely confusing if you don't. Of course, most travellers don't.
 
B) extremely variable food quality. In Japan or Taiwan you can pretty much walk into any restaurant and it'll be decent, in mainland China at worst it can leave you in a toilet for several days with gastroenteritis. Every time I visit China I have some days where I feel queasy. On the flipside, at its best Chinese food is the best in the world, but casual travellers won't know how to get it.
 
C) Software/websites: this has dramatically improved in recent years, but it's still ropey. Just finding a nearby boutique coffee shop on Amap is a challenge you simply don't have in Japan where you can just Google it.
 
D) insane crowds: We've all experienced them. Personally I don't mind, but it's not everyone's cup of tea.
 
E) It's a very different proposition to travel in the countryside or minor cities then to visit guangzhou and shanghai. All of these problems get multiplied 10x (of course, the locals are also 10x friendlier, which helps).
 
That said, tourism in China seems to be changing quite fast. Only a few years ago just getting a visa was an exercise in pain, now about half of the developed world (sorry usa!) can travel visa free for a month. Who knows what it'll be like in 2030?

中国人英语确实比日本人好，但是当语言障碍引发问题时，在中国局面可能会变得相当严重。在中国，很多事情都有点官僚化，如果你掌握了中级水平的中文，可能会觉得相对简单，但如果你啥都不懂，事情就会变得极其混乱。当然，大多数游客都不会遇到这种情况。
 
B，食物质量极不稳定。
在日本或者台湾（地区），你随便走进任何一家餐厅都能吃上一顿还算不错的饭菜；而在中国大陆，最糟糕的情况是你可能会忍受肠胃炎的折磨被迫在那里待上几天。每次我访问中国时，总会有几天感到身体不适。但在另一方面，中国菜在最好的情况下则是世界上最棒的美食，但是普通游客并不知道该如何吃上正宗的中国菜。
 
C，软件和网站：近年来这方面有所改善，但依旧存在不少问题。比如在高德地图上寻找一家精品咖啡店对我们而言可是一个不小的难题，而在日本你则可以在谷歌上搜到相关信息。
 
D，拥堵的人群：我们都遇到过这种情况。就个人而言，我并不介意，但并非所有人都能接受那种场面。
 
E，在乡村或者小城市旅行与广州或者上海相比，是一种完全不同的体验。所有我上面提及的这些问题都会成倍加剧（当然，当地人的态度也会更加友好，有助于缓解这种情况）
 
话虽如此，中国旅游业几乎正在经历迅速的变化。就在几年前，办理中国签证还是一件非常痛苦的事情，然而到了现在，几乎一半的发达国家（抱歉，美国！）的公民都可以免签在中国旅行一个月了。谁又能知道2030年时会是怎样一种光景呢？

Went to China, Korea and Japan. Beijing Hotels are super expensive whereas Shanghai is cheaper. I can not confirm that Chinese people speak better english than Japanese, it seemed like they didn‘t speak any English at all. Big crowds except for the countryside. Good infrastructure, good metro, friendly people overall.

I tell everyone this. I have spent 6 months in China in total in my life. Lots of trips.Chongqing, Chengdu, Shanghai, Guangzhou.I’ve been to Japan twice. It’s TAME and lame compared to China for the city scene. Honestly, the mountains and outdoors scenes in Yunnan are better in my opinion too.The people… So kind, so wonderful. Open, generous and always inviting me to hang out and play drinking games.

As someone whose been to every national park in the US, China still has a few things that can rival the best US NPs, namely Wulingyuan, Zhangye Geopark, etc. Japan…really doesn’t have anything in that league in terms of national scenery. Personally, natural scenery is what makes or breaks traveling for me so Japan does very little for me.

I think japan is better for first time overseas travelling, esp if its your first time to asia - just bc the tourism infrastructure is more foreigner friendly, whereas Chinese young ppl do speak better english, and is more affordable for the same quality of experience, and has a very different culture and personality. I find that China is very much “i would never visit China” or “I love China im coming back a second time”. Nonetheless i appreciate all the wonderfully open minded travellers here. Yall make this world so much better and more connected

I agree. Japan is a lot easier for westerners, especially first timers in Asia. Everything is sparkly clean, internet is the same as the west, you can easily navigate through places. China on the other hand has its learning curve which could even be steep for some. But then once you have the internet and payment apps settled everything becomes smooth, and man China is enormous and so diverse, there's so much to explore.

Agree & other things people have mentioned. TBH, much of China is also more chilled out culturally than Japan or Korea. It’s harder to inadvertently cause offense. They have less rigid unwritten social rules & are very forgiving of foreign weirdness. At worse, they usually seem to find it humorous.

yes!! this is one of the biggest reasons why i enjoyed China a lot more. i’m australian and our social rules (i’d say) are generally more similar to japanese ones, and it often makes daily tasks such as going on public transport and walking on the street a lot less enjoyable, having to constantly think about how i may be causing a disturbance — with small things such as unintentionally being in someone’s way often making me feel guilty, awkward, and unable to relax. meanwhile in China, no one is really thinking about it, so it doesn’t matter if you’re in the way at all, which i love.

and people often compare these social differences as japanese being more civilised and polite as opposed to Chinese being inconsiderate and rude. though i disagree and feel like it’s simply how each of their societies work. in japan, there is social order because each person is aware of how their actions might affect others, whilst with China, though many foreigners may consider their disregard for public behaviour as being unordered, it simply follows a different kind of order — one where people just coexist and blend around each other, accommodating others’ quirks and whatnot, which in my opinion is much more considerate and genuine than shallow politeness that stems from awkwardness.

Couldn’t agree more. I also feel like Japan is all the rage now, it is a trendy destination and hyped so much on social media and even people who don’t travel a lot or at all are going now. It is an amazing destination for sure but there’s just so much more to East Asia than Japan and South Korea honestly.

Agreed. I just took my 72 yr old dad to xi’an to visit my wife’s family… his comment was that even including the flight ticket he still spent less than what he normally does at home. “I can’t tell you how many of the most delicious meals under $5 I had”
