>Launched in May 2025, the app requires users to check in every two days by tapping a large on-screen button to confirm they are alive. If they fail to do so, the app automatically alxs a chosen emergency contact that something may be wrong.
I mean that could be usefull i guess ?
>The app markets itself as a “safety companion” for people living alone, students away from home, and those choosing a solitary lifestyle.

My MIL's retirement village uses flash cards by the door for the day of the week.
They're supposed to set the day of the week in the morning, so anyone who still has the previous day set, will get a check in when the nurse goes around on her golf cart.

We had the same system in my village (UK) except instead of a nurse, us primary school kids (so like 7-10 year olds) would check the cards on the walk to school and knock if any were incorrect, and then report it if we got no response. It seemed like a nice little system.
Plus I got lots of little gifts of thanks left out for me, especially during the colder months, when I'd do my rounds before school. Seemed like a win win :)

I'm pretty sure I heard of a lady who died in her garage and they didn't notice for years because everything was on auto pay. I only pay one bill manually now, and it's not property taxes. If I automate that being paid from an account with enough money in it, I could disappear for a while before any authorities notice.

That happens more than people think. Especially with the people who have either cut ties with family or don't really have any family to begin with and usually keep to themselves staying at home and not being social. Those are the ones where you hear about it being the postal worker who calls after noticing they haven't collected their mail in a week or more. Or if it's and apartment complex it's sometimes the smell that alxs someone to something going on...

Yep, happened to me. Started having complications with my epilepsy and my manager talked to HR when I no call no showed (work from home). HR called my parents (emergency contact) and they found me seizing in my apartment.
Luckily I had mentioned to my manager on Monday I wasn't feeling great, so when I wasn't responding on Tuesday it made my manager legitimately worry.

Honestly it’s a great idea, but should check in every 24 hours.
My aunt who lives alone and is older has a similar more old school system: she and an older friend who also lives alone call each other every day as a safety check.

The controversy isn't the function, although the app is translated as "Are you dead?", the app name could be interpreted as "Are you dead yet?" in Chinese.

I could see Android or iOS eventually incorporating this concept straight into the operating system. If you just haven’t touched your phone in 24hrs (or whatever timefrx you set) then notify whatever contact.
Could be great for a lot of different people. This kind of thing happens a lot for older people whose families have moved away or whatever.

I see the short term good in this app. But no one seems to be talking about the bad.
My reluctance to join in on the chorus of praise here for this app is because I can already tell in the future that governments are going to make their own app like this and mandate it for all civilians who are single. Courts will side with congressmen saying that this app is allowed to violate your rights to privacy because the state has a compelling interest in safeguarding the public from harm. And if you choose not to comply, you will get fined. Or jailed. A new wave of Debtors' Prison
I can already see how this trend will slide from being an uplifting mechanism to an artifact of cultural depression. It will become a tool for elites to control rent prices by discriminating against single people, it will be used by government to spy on your current whereabouts because you will have to regularly report by interacting with the buttons on the app every so often, and police will use it as a civil forfeiture method of stealing from you because they will be following laws that allow them to not only obtain warrants to locate your whereabouts if you don't comply, but also pull money directly off your person once they do find you in order to satisfy the violation levied against you.
I don't see how this is good long term. It will undoubtedly be used by those in power to flex more power over those under them.

This is useful until the government recognizes the usefulness themselves and passes laws mandating all single people to use this app under the guise of "being in the interest of preserving the public health and well being". Then the Black Mirror episode begins and those who don't comply are fined and jailed and relentlessly spied on until they are far worse off than before the app ever existed in the first place. And the only way out is if you are partnered. That will give the government the excuse it needs to indirectly coerce marriages and have couples who otherwise wanted to be single to pump out babies and live miserable lives together for the sake of propping up the state's capitalistic fervor.

This would be very handy where I live. We have a lot of elderly farm folks living alone, who die, only to be found by us neighbours when the buzzards start circling. My neighbour has found 4 of my neighbours outside, deceased, in the last 16 months. It would be better to find them before the wolves got them so 1-2 days is ideal.

It's a sad take on the world that we're in at this point. But we have a lot of people out there that live alone and neighbours wouldn't notice particularly quickly that they've not been seen for a while. I have had the thought "who would even notice if something happened to me" before. I called my parents weekly, but it would probably be a week or two before they worried about not hearing from me. My employer would probably give it a couple of days, since I can work from home.
Speak to anyone who's been working as a firefighter for a couple of years, I'm sure most of us have been to a welfare call and either found someone that's been on the floor for a day or two, or we were simply too late.

Everyone should have a safety net of 2 people. You register online and 2 random people are assigned to you as your keepers, their task is to know you're ok every day, just by a simple message and reply.
Would be useful to older people and emergency situations

I need this app! I live alone, I'm not sociable enough to talk to people outside of work every day, and Liz Lemon has given me a complex that I'm going to choke on some dinner or slip in the bath and lie there dead and undiscovered for days. At least my cats are food obsessed enough to start eating me so I know they won't starve but someone needs to give the little bastards a hug and some water.

Interesting app.
I myself am from the boonies and have moved to the city about 4 years ago.
I am a programmer by profession. The longest I've ever gone without ever talking to anyone is 1 year and 7 months. Not counting the casual thank yous and small forms of communication I do when buying groceries at the cashier, etc etc.
I work from home and we do chat based meetings and anything work related is done over company slack.
I don't go out to eat. I cook for myself. Infact the only time I ever go outside is to buy groceries. My apartment complex has a gym so I do my physical activities there.
I don't go out of my way to hide or avoid people but I also do not go out of my way to socialize or talk to people.
When I am done with work I usually play games or read. I've recently started building miniature war boats or galleons. I've finished 2 so far.
Over the years I have slowly discovered that I am very much comfortable at being alone. As in, not seeing, talking or having any physical contact with anyone for very very prolonged periods of time. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing, I honestly don't know.
I don't get sad, I don't feel anxiety nor am I depressed. I just feel... Neutral I guess. I find enjoyment in being alone.
Sometimes I wonder if there's something wrong with me.
I hope not.

Nah, you can get the pin with a wrench and some duct tape honestly

I love how "China" is basically a trigger phrase for you liberals, activating your programming. The brainwashing is so powerful

I've thought about something like this, something you have to check in on. But then I think what happens when my internet (wifi/data) is down, or I have no power? What happens if I oversleep or got drunk or something and am not there to do it in time? If it's only on mobile, what happens if I lose/break my phone? Hell, I use my phone to get into my parking lot--I *already* worry about that.

Here in America we have the Snug app, which alxs family and even police if you do not check in at a certain time every day.

I guess this is a kick in the rear for me to finally throw my app out there.
Similar in nature (dead mans switch) but offers a ton of flexibility with more ways to announce your expiration if you want (memorial sites, video sites, audio sites, release the files type of sites, ways to publicly show your "status" and planned for OnSite actions (legal gets involved, we get pre-cleared to remove specific items from a location). Also we are going to be able to offer to mail items stored in our vault as a "action" if you do not check in.

This app seems like it would be a great tool either way, alone or not. Perhaps a useful addition would be to have the ability to set a timer, say you're going somewhere alone, you set a timer to check yourself in in X minutes, and then at least everyone knows you've made it to your destination safe... Or not of course.

Man I want this for me and I have a family. My kids are young and I had this horrifying thought that if my husband and I somehow got hurt or died, our kids could starve to death in the house before anybody realized something was wrong.
The oldest is 6 now, and I think he would eventually leave the house… looks like it’s time for the “what to do in an emergency” chat

We need that in the U.S. I'm over 70 and basically live alone (family in attached house, but we hardly interact). How many days we'll be dead before someone finds our corpse is a definite topic of conversation among us olds from time to time. Our county has a program where the sheriff's office will call you every day for a check-in, and if you don't respond they'll send someone out for a wellness check. But some of hus don't want a phone call every day. An app with options like every two days seems more seamless.

I always see somewhat fluff pieces talking about the rise of the rich and upper middle class in China and being like "wow, nice they are improving their lives and the government might be better to them" and realizing they are just feeling a taste of capitalism and it's still a dystopian world.

How is a wellness check app dystopian?

I wouldn't say the app itself is dystopian, as long as it's voluntary, but it's a little dystopian that we've got to a place where this is the number 1 app in China. People really interact so little, that there's a risk no-one would notice they're dead.
