You don’t listen to the story well enough.  It say the cost of using pigs is 70% less compared to other methods.  That 30% cost is for the pigs and feeding them.

The video does not match the dialogue. The pigs might dig up the desert, but there is nothing there to feed on. There is no water for them to drink. If you bring them into newly planted areas, they will destroy it. I frankly do not believe this at all.

The Kubuqi Desert in Ordos City, Inner Mongolia (China's seventh largest desert, covering 18,630 square kilometers). Initially, sand stabilization is crucial: grass must be planted before raising pigs; direct pig farming is not feasible. Sand stabilization requires using straw checkerboard barriers and planting drought-resistant plants like Haloxylon ammodendron and Salix psammophila to increase vegetation coverage to over 30%. Only after initial soil improvement can pig herds be introduced. Large quantities of straw need to be transported to provide organic matter to the desert, and the manure needs to be fermented into organic fertilizer. Profits cannot cover the costs of desertification control, necessitating a national ecological subsidy of $330 per hectare annually, along with straw transportation support. Costs increase dramatically the deeper into the desert. Currently, the only approach is to gradually shrink the desert perimeter every five years, with the desert shrinking by 5%-8% annually. Complete desert transformation is estimated to take at least 80 years. Transforming the seven major deserts would require hundreds of thousands of graduates to live, work, and live on the desert's edge for three generations. The area treated in the last five years is equivalent to the size of Israel or Slovenia, but the high transportation costs to the deeper parts of the desert have hampered project progress.

目前可行的方案是每五年推进一轮治沙工程，逐步缩小沙漠的外围范围，实现每年 5%—8% 的沙漠面积缩减。

据估算，要完成整片沙漠的治理改造，至少需要 80 年时间。若要对全国七大沙漠进行全面治理，则需要数十万专业人才，祖孙三代扎根在沙漠边缘生活、工作。

过去五年，已治理的沙漠面积相当于一个以色列或斯洛文尼亚的国土大小，但沙漠腹地高昂的运输成本，仍在制约着治沙工程的推进进度。

China has learned that Nature heals itself when not interfered with.  They closed off a desert for 5 years, with the effort put on preventing people from entering for grazing their livestock.  The desert greened itself with return of water, vegetation and animals.

I think some ground work has to be done 1st. Then pigs are introduced to roam the ground. However, due to the lack of food in the desert, regular delivery of food to the pigs is still needed and it probably takes years to green the desert. It will be quite substantial economic cost.

Well for us who actually know the destruction that pigs do to the environment, this story seems like a half truth, if not a complete fabrication.  True that pigs till the soil with their snouts which helps with aeration, but in a complete desert where there is only sand they'd have nothing to root about for and they would definitely suffer from malnutrition.  Secondly, pigs might work initially to till the soil, but once the seeds germinate and new shoots begin to grow, they would completely destroy any chance of the new shoots to develop fully.  So the only way that this would work is if the pigs are moved away from new planted areas, and penned out to allow these areas to become established.
