The Japanese government mindset appears to be stuck somewhere back in the Shōwa era, I think. If it is to seriously address concerns about having an aging, shrinking population, it needs to overhaul its approach towards everything - social care provision, higher education funding, childcare provision, financial support, affordable housing and job creation, increasing training and retraining opportunities, addressing antiquated biases in the work environment, tackle and destigmatise poverty, homelessness and mental health issues.

Because money doesn't grow on trees. thus making economic necessity, economic reality. If you want the world to pay for your worthless degree in 16th century dogs playing cards paintings, just because you're motivated to learn about it, doesn't mean the world is willing to do so. There's no benefit to the world, so the world would actually be better off without your motivation. God bless ya.

@PulverizerA This argument could have been used for primary school, but wise people realized having public finances pay for it instead would allow more people to contribute to the economy regardless of their parents' financial standing, and was thus a worthy investment for the social and economic future of the nation.
That being said, I wouldn't mind if a public financing program for college was limited to a list of economically viable degrees, or if any class failure had to be paid back by the student. This means the "free ride" would be limited to students that pass classes likely to earn them a job.

Here is the thing, its not about whether college itself is important, its that a good many cultures are decidedly uninterested in training young people to accomplish their dreams and be able to grasp ambitions. Too often you have a "pick yourself up by the bootstraps" from people who got theirs and don't care to preserve the future. So there is just no interest in helping make sure the next generation is secured outside of platitudes. So dismissing higher education isn't the answer, its making sure that opportunities for training in any form, whether that be higher education, apprenticeships, vocational facilities, or better on the job training is a thing.

japan's biggest problem is excessive work hours. they need to pass laws outlawing requiring people to work more than 40 hours. this would mean companies need more employees not less. it would help the situation in that men would have more time to spend with their family which could cut the divorce rate as well.

True , their work hours are brutal. But then again they are a resource poor country. I love in the Philippines and make twenty dollars a day but I can eat scallops, fresh fruit and veggies everyday. Live in a nice place. It's so plentiful here most people eat well even if they're poor. Only in the cities is life difficult. Also many imported goods are expensive but food. Food is great here though. Clothes, goods are expensive but then again I love a few minutes from the beach.

You are learning about the big cities, Japan. Specifically Tokyo. There is another Japan out in the country side and on the smaller Islands of the Amami Islands going south to Okinawa. I have spent a lot of time in the country side up north in the Aomori prefecture and down south on a few of the smaller Islands north of Okinawa. There are beautiful girls in all these places, and even though they can be a bit bashful on first seeing a foreigner, if you know a few greeting phrases, you can strike up a conversation and be pleasantly surprised by their abilities to speak and understand English. Once they are comfortable in your presence. English is taught in most High schools and even in grade schools now. So just because you meet girls who are a bit on the selfish or me, all me type. Don't give up. There are girls out in the country side and on remote Islands that are interested in meeting foreign guys, especially if you have blond hair and blue eyes. I had no problems meeting and talking to many. Married one, and have had and still having the time of my life with her. She IS truly my Island Princess. We have been married over 40 years. I did call her my Hedinka in front of her parents a couple of times. Her father's reaction was. Noni Hedinka? ( meaning what princess). Her mom caught the significance right away and became my best friend, even smoothing over father. Hint: when girls marry foreigners both moms and dads have some worries. It is up to you to prove their worries are unfounded. So work hard in that area, it IS important to assure the moms and dads that their young daughter has chosen well. You won't regret it later. And Life with her has gone by too fast. So I pray to the heavens that I can have another 40 years with her.

Since they will probably not get a high paying job after college, and put themselves in debt because of college, I have an idea:
Focus less on college, and more on trades and entrepreneurship.
There are SO MANY family businesses that will shut down because there is no one in the area that want to work there and carry on that business.
Forget about college, and work at a traditional Japanese knife factory, or other high-quality family owned Japanese business.
Japan has a super smart and super highly skilled workforce. Japan can lead the world in high-quality, high-end goods. Do not race China/Vietnam/India to the bottom!
Forget the cities, Japanese small towns NEEDS YOU

Those many family businesses most of the time start at 7 in the morning and end at 22 ....
And many of them are like never on holiday.
Many of those businesses also have a strict hirachy and want you to have years of experience and in my opinion Japanese craftsman have a strange teaching system.
Those are most of the time no dream jobs.

@blablup1214 I understand, and I didn't know that those family businesses are so bad. But, I would rather have my daughter work there than work as a prostitute, even part time! I mean, at the family business, if they don't treat you well, you can spend 7-10 years learning the business, and with a loan or some money from the parents, start a small business of your own in the same field. I mean, being an office worker or salesman for a big company is miserable, too, even if you graduated a big university!! As owner, you will still work a ton of hours, but that's all businesses. And by working for a small family business, if you have some determination and some drive, at least there is the chance to work for yourself.

what really gets me is you have this nice japanese comedian who radiates good boy energy, and there are all these cutesy sound effects and visual effects which are pretty common in japanese youtube channels I guess, and the relaxing music, and then the subject matter is about systematic oppression of women in japan through capitalism

The Sugar Daddy market is common throughout the West too, including in Australia where international students are faced with very expensive fees upfront. It is common for Asian students including Japanese to work in the sex industry here.
Australian students receive interest free loans that do not have to be paid back until they start working. That does not stop them working in the sex industry to cover their rent and other expenses.

Well it's nice to know that the college problem we have here for the US is also there too. See this is why I hated school when I was a kid and still hate it now as an adult. It's all just meaningless to go through. See my job didn't need that because I found what people need I taught myself and the rest was easy.

I'd say our college problem is even worse. Nobody thought about student loan forgiveness until very recently. By now, it's too late to do so without also potentially taxing everybody to hell and back.

The problem is that most Japanese companies, and Japanese society in general, are male-dominated. Women are expected to leave university, work a few years as an OL to find a suitable partner, then quit work to marry and become a housewife and mother. If they don't get married and want to continue their career, there is a very low glass ceiling that limits their work progression, and often find it difficult to even land a permanent job, no matter how qualified they are.
The smart ones end up learning another language and leaving Japan altogether for another country as they see no hope for them in Japan besides becoming a housewife.
All this is of course adding to Japan's demographic problems as those well-educated young women and their future children are forever lost to Japan.

I knew the living in Japan and studying is expensive from personal research. I was looking for a Master or a simple course I could take there but after finding out the details, it seems like a wishful dream. I also made some research about why in Japan there is an increase of people who commit suicide because of the high workload & less pay which make dating and making a family impossible. Thanks to you, I understand a bit more about these circumstances as well, though I think it would have been pretty clear how things are if I thought some more about the discrepancies between full time and part time worker.
Personally, I keep Japan and its people in very high regard and I'm sure many other people from multiple countries do the same. It somehow pains me to know that such an popular place, full of unique culture goes through these hard times.
