Apart from the moral question, which is admittedly huge, diamonds can only lose their value as they can now be grown to a size and quality which is perfectly suitable for jewelry for a fraction of the cost. Diamonds are a very bad investment. If I had diamonds as an investment now I would be trying to get rid of them like they were kryptonite.

I went back and watched earlier reports to see why Botswana wants to buy controlling stakes in De Beers. Seems it will benefit from control of. resources together with other diamond mining countries in Africa, control price and do the cutting themselves.
