Forgive me that in a great extent I don't answer in general. My perception says me that my countrymen mostly have very blurry image of India, full of stereotypes ingrained by propaganda during soviet era and stories from that who visited Goa. Probably it's some kind of missionary (you can easily trace it in this answer) and hypocritical (this I hope excluded from the answer) attitude. Albeit there should be some kind of study to answer definitely. Of course there are some minor groups of Russians who have deeper understanding and more realistic view on India. Though in my atheistic point of view most of them somehow bogged in mystical aspect of your country. For example there is whole Форум about India and it's pal countries in Russian.

As you can guess I decided to write my personal opinion what India is.
Country of unbelievable dirt. As person who's second nature is mess and dirt, I felt myself pretty fine ;-) Though was shocked for a first few weeks. Than relaxed and been himself. This is not perceived bad emotionally but this is probably ineffective. And should be improved not blindly copying West but rather proactively constructing convenient environment.

Country of a fierce competition due to population, therefore higher education institutions occupied with people who's mean IQ 1sd higher than mediocre Russian student. Along with this fact, and probably contradictory, drill learning is widely practiced. Improving of economical situation along with increasing of perceiving human life as value itself (which I believe should be motivator for 1st), would improve situation with rat race. Allowing smart to be creative, and mediocre just feel OK.

I deeply felt it by the end of my second visit. l occasionally helped some poor people but this is only drop of water in a desert. I believe your nation will overcome this. But it will take at least 1 generation. Sad.

Charming, mesmerizing , friendly country. Narrow streets packed with various merchants and wallahs, empty railway stations during nights that warm as mother's breathe, temple that popping from the darkness outside of train, shining with thousands light bulbs, hypnotizing with rotating swastikas. Servant who fed crows, cobbler who treated rats lived under his stall with his lunch. Connection between people and critters, which western society looses. People who suddenly help and suddenly disappear. Whom I didn't manage even express a gratitude. My friend who helped me a lot in various ways.
I like you and your country! I'm hesitating to say love but near that:-)

I live in a city which wouldn't have came into existence without help of USSR/Russia. Any any other citizen in the city i too love the stories of Russians and feel proud on looking old pictures of my city.
I live in Bhilai which is a town around the Bhilai Steel plant made with the help of USSR/Russia.
Our love and respect for Russian people is really big.

Coming back to where is started.
What i see is every Indian respects Russia and Russian people.
In the steel plant we still praise the level of Russian engineering. Russian people have never left a single chance to amaze us. I have seen Russian engineers working in some videos whivh my dad filmed in plant. So hardworking and determined people they are and yet so simple and warm hearted. I am really inspired by them.

Concluding this answer i can say that India and Russia are like two brothers. We both can rely on each other and love each other.
And i forgot to tell that there is a zoo in the city just named after our friendship with Russia. Its name is Maitri Bagh ( translating into Maitri=friendship and Bagh= garden).
I hope this bond between India and Russia deepens more in future. :)

Indians: knowing some personally I think that they are all cool, awesome, intelligent and very nice people. At times it can be very difficult to understand them, though. I always have to consider such factors as cultural differences, language barrier and patience, like a lot of Americans do, when communicating with foreigners (just amazing quality! Why can't every nation have it?), but don't think that Indians always do the same. They also like to be in their community very much for some reason, what I simply can't understand, but, guess, it's just the matter of their culture's preference and my own taste. Other than that I would say that I don't see any minuses in them: they are very awesome friends, enormously wise and ready to help if smth. Kinda struggle with understanding how exactly their psychology works, but thinking lately that, perhaps, it might not have to do much with their uniqueness as much as with my not very good ability to understand people with very feminine personality and not making myself very clear, when saying something, while this could help me be better understood.

India: never actually been there, but lately have some kind of a contradiction in my mind between India "often seen:" country with poor people, not very clean Ganges and some people swimming in it, and then another side: India "rarely seen," all its beauty with palm trees, beach, modernly dressed Indian teenagers, European stores, companies and very romantic atmosphere. Which of this two sides dominates more - I have no idea, but pretty sure that the country that creates such cool people should definitely be as unique and appealing as they are.)

Yes, for that we have to take a look over International Politics played just after 2nd world war. Although, India remained non-aligned between the cold war of US and USSR, it had a close or can say intimate relationship with Russian Federation. The relationship was not limited to private and Government sectors but it was extended to our hearts. Yes, today obviously the regional *** parties are being thrashed out from the national politics by the public and there is a great agitation against their ideology. But, then also I can say that Russia contributed to a great extent in the mutual progress of both the nations.

Russia’s role in development of India: Just after Independence, India had to face many hardships including the situation of war between two emerging superpowers. As India adopted the democratic form of governance, it was thought that it would join the US power bloc. But it avoided it, as a result Russia started coming nearer to India. Russia helped India during the times of hardships. It helped India on the matter of Kashmir by supporting its stand in UN. It helped India by opposing all the resolutions banning or criticizing Indian successful nuclear test at Pokhran, Rajasthan. It helped India by providing the modern weapons. Cultural as well as “Bolly-relations”: Bollywood is most favorite film industry of Russia. The Soviet Russia till today admires the great actor “Raj Kapoor” as the king of 60’s. The Russians believe that India is a mysterious as well as a unique country. As I have personally visited Russia, I can share my experience that they have a curiosity to know that how can Indians work in partnership so fluently? How mysteriously the divorce rate in Indian Hindus is 1 % which the lowest in the whole world? The answer I gave every time was trust of every person on almost every one. Yes, they were surprised because its difficult in that communist country to trust on everyone and to find a perfect partner, in every sector including a life partner. After all they are influenced by the colorful, celebratory and trustful natures of Indians. Yes, they are also influenced by the Indian food. Although, the taste of Indian food sold there doesn’t have a Spicy typical Indian taste.

Indians have a neutral reactions towards Russia, as the International political history taught in schools to them have an American eye-view. The US is showed to be the supreme power of the whole world. But I firmly believe that this system should be changed from its roots and truth should only be taught. we should show both the points of view to every student. So, he can decide the real reason behind an international consequences. Because, the future of any country depends upon its upcoming generations only.

I don't want to talk about what India and Indians think about Russia and Russians. I'd rather like to talk about what I personally think about them ^_^

I have very beautiful thoughts about Russia right from my early childhood. I don't remember how old I was when this travelling Russian book fair came to Kerala. But I remember holding my dad's hand and going to the exhibition. He bought me a book bundle of Russian Folk Tales. It was a set of about 12 or 15 books (I don't remember the exact number) and each book had folk stories from different parts of then USSR. There were stories from Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan…and I was enthralled! They were totally different from the Panchatantra stories or Aesop’s tales or Enid Blyton’s storybooks that I had read until then. And I remember how pretty the illustrations were. I read them over and over again because they were so fascinating. I have still kept them safely in my bookshelf back home.

And then I had those Russian wooden dolls…the ones that you could screw open and there would be one more doll inside it. And they were very precious to me.
And then as I grew up, I read about Anastasia and Rasputin and the Tsars and all that. Anna Karenina is one of my best loved books.
And the people there are so beautiful to look at. Lovely blonde hair and light eyes and all that. It was like a country full of Barbie dolls! ^_^
There was something that was certainly very ‘drawing’ about Russia. And I cannot put a finger on what exactly it is that was causing this. So to me, Russia has always been fascinating. Very fascinating! ^_^

Spicy food and warm weather - a fair bit of Russians spent a long time in India, especially during winters to bask in sunshine. South Goa typically seems to be the most preferred destination. They even enjoy the spicy food and thalis with endless number of dishes.
Religious freedom and secularity - My friend, being an orthodox Christian was all in praise of India being open to religious freedom. She participated in several religious conferences, including some hosted in India or by Indians. She was surprised by the support they received often from different religious backgrounds. All I could say is that India has been the birthplace of several religions and we believe it makes us culturally richer. Differences do exist but on a non-political level in day-to-day life, there is barely any rift.

Let me answer how I personally perceive Russia. For me, Russia has always been a dreamland and it has a special space in my subconscious mind. This is because as a kid, I had a bunch of books written by Soviet authors. I practically grew up reading folk stories with characters called Ivan, Alyosha, Baba Yaga, etc. I must have read “Chuk and Gek” at least a hundred times. I also had a children’s book containing stories authored by exponents like Chekhov and Dostoevsky. I also had my first introduction to Geometry through a funny book (I have lost it now) which presented this subject as a story with characters like pencil, point, line, triangles and eraser (he was the mean villain of the novel). I feel pity for the kids of present generation, when I see them buying utter shit like Harry Potter. As I grew up, I grew into an avid reader and kept in touch with Russian books. It is a nice coincidence that as I am writing this answer on Quora, a Russian book (Ancient Philosophy by A. S. Bogomolov) is still lying at one side of my desk. While I was studying at University, I got interested in watching movies from every part of the world. On suggestion of my cousin, I watched “Man with a Movie Camera” and after watching “The Steamroller and the Violin”, I decided to watch all the movies by Tarkovsky and did so. I also borrowed the book “Film sense” (Sergei Eisenstein) from my cousin and don’t intend to return it ever.

Apart from art, Russia has also been the land of science and technology. In particular, when it came to theoretical physics and maths, Russians are unbeatable. What is most interesting is that Russians have developed their own genre of doing science. The way they approach a theoretical subject is very different from how the rest of the world does so. I often feel so bad, when I witness the decline in Russian technology, perhaps because of economical constraint. I am aware that the ground realities in modern Russia are quite different from the image I had in my childhood. Governments have practically served their glorious nation on a plate to Mafia, pimps and organ sellers. One of my friends visited Saint Petersburg and got robbed as soon as he stepped out of the airport. But still I would like to see the land of my dreams at least once before I die.

I'm not Russian, so I don't feel comfortable speaking definitely about how Russian people view or think of India. However, I do know that Russians do have a place in their heart for India and in particular for Bollywood.

I know from reading various things that Raj Kapoor was one of the first Indians to become widely known in Russia. People all over were drawn to him because he was so charismatic and I think the Russians felt the pull of the same charisma. And, think about it...they had just come out of one of the most difficult times in their thistory. Here was this lovely man on screen who was starring in films that were, by and large, uplifting and also just plain fun in many cases. And what Russian doesn't love a great song??

I would venture to guess that that fondness Russians have for Bollywood films is still there. I know they still watch Raj Kapoor films there. I know that there is a HUGE fan club for Shah Rukh Khan there, so you know people have got to be watching and enjoying at least some Indian films. And I know Kareena Kapoor is also very popular.

What's not to love?

Honestly speaking,it is kinda stereotype that Russians are our brothers,they helped us..blah..blah.Most of the generation is unaware about the relationship between geopolitical relations of India and Russia…Yes,these are the geopolitical relations that make these countries close to each other.Even in the book by brain of Russia,Aleksandr Dugin,he considered India as a little bit important in south Asia…that's it!!He didn't want to see it as a superpower or something…Regarding your 1971…USSR helped India due to fear of dominacy of USA.Thus,it can be concluded that we Indians should step out of this imaginary cloud of best freindship and see the geopolitical steps here.We should remember in geopolitics none is permanent friend or enemy.

I have lived in Russia for 6 years and I think I can answer what an average people on both sides think about each other putting aside all political help and Indian movies once cherished by both sides.

As lot of other countries Russians too have an Image that India is poor and many live in slum,much of like slum dog millionaire movie scenario.They don't have any Idea about all the scientific and medical achievement India have achieved within a span of time.Only Russians who travel to US,UK and other developed countries who get to meet educated and Rich Indians get a little Idea of change Indians acquired.Russia have group like Neo Nazi who beat up and racially discriminate foreigners especially Brown,black skinned and Jews.The goverment have done anything till now to put check on such atrocities.There is no Law and order in Russia and Mafia leaders are given much respect by law officials and common man.Anything and anyone can be purchased.The only category of Russian people who seem to have a good view are females both young and aged! Old people love Indians because they are in love with memories of Indian movies they once watched.Thanks to Raj Kapoor, mithun chakravarthy and others.Some young Russian females love to have relationship with foreigners because they are considered much better than Russian macho male because majority of them are rude and money minded.

An educated Indian who has travelled around do not have good impression about Russians.I have a cousin who completed medicine from russia,now working in Govt sector after completing examination and following formalities from Medical council of India who prefer not reveal his identity of medical graduation from Russia.That's because the general Image of Russia as a country is too low among Indians even though the Russian medical education is above average.
This is my view about Russia even though I have made some good Russian friends.

More problems are faced by Russian citizens in Russia were necessities and rights have been denied by goverment.Majority of people lead a life were freedom of expression have been denied.

I had and have a very positive opinion about Russia and Russians (thanks to the positive potrayal of russsia in the Indian media that might have shaped my early childhood opinion).
On meeting my university mate from Russia, we bonded pretty easily thanks to positive view of each other. As I got to know him more I realised that some of the stereotypes about Russians is just blown out of proportion by the leftists and ultra liberal media. He wasn’t a cold hearted, emotionless person as people normally expect Russians to be. Perhaps he was more expressive and social than I was he did all the normal things like us and he certainly wasn’t a chronic Vodka drinker as we started speaking more about each other’s counties there was so much that go to know about each other.

He was surprised to see (pics, videos) the modern India, the raising middle class, growing wealth, how the poverty is fading (slowly but it surely is fading), how diverse India is, different culture, practices, food habits, looks and even our costumes…
Similarly I got to know that Russia is still recovering from the trauma it went through during communist regime, the social oppression it faced in the pre Soviet era (Most of Russian working class was poverty struck and poor as result of exploitation from the elite). So Russian society needs more time to culturally evolve and flourish in order to shrug off its rough and rugged look. That being said, average Russians are just as hard working as anybody else from other parts of the world if not more (due to the unforgiving climate they live in).

Russians think of India as a land of mystics and strong religious belief, age old traditions and culture, colourful cloths and celebrations, my flatmate once actually believed Indians randomly start dancing when they feel happy just like it happens in Bollywood (like in the rest of the world, he too though Bollywood portrays Indian life in a natural manner), that most Indians are poor, living in unhygienic conditions (thanks to western media, specifically those from English speaking counties), that Indians speak good English even though it’s not our mother tongue, india’s IT, Taj Mahal and antiemetic forts, Maharajas, elephants and tiger….

I am an Indian & I will give my perspective of Russia.
While growing up, I used to hear a lot about Russia. Even there was a chapter in our school books about an experience of Indian family in Russia. We used to have a separate chapter in History books about Russian Revolution whereas American & French revolution were relegated to a few pages. One of our family friend went to Soviet unx for his PhD and he used to show me a touch which he had purchased there.
I was told that Soviet unx/Russia was a great country and as a 7 years old, I became very upset when I read that India’s friend Soviet unx had collapsed into 15 countries. People in my hometown were very concerned that Pakistan can attack India at that time with help of America.

But my admiration for Russia has come down in last 10 years. Russia is no longer a dream country for India, Hardly a few Indian goes there to study & work.
Russians has arm twisted Indians on many defense projects like INS Vikramaditya. Russia has tarted selling Arms to Pakistan & Russians did join military exercise with Pakistan in Pakistan just after Uri Attack. The public opinion is no longer favorable to Russia now.

Lot of Indians are now working in Europe & America and we have a very favorable view of West and now we consider America as a friend.
We hardy see any Russian films or serials. We hardly read about Russia and that is another factor that young generation have very less knowledge about Russia.
My opinion about Russia is that Russia is a good friend but we are no more special friends.
