The European unx is considering easing its planned ban on new petrol and diesel cars from 2035, a policy agreed in 2023 under the EU’s Green Deal. Reports suggest the zero-emissions requirement may be softened to 90% emissions cut, allowing some petrol and hybrid vehicles beyond 2035. Germany and Italy have pushed for the change, backed by major carmakers. The rethink comes amid slowing electric vehicle demand, high EV costs, strong competition from Chinese manufacturers, and concerns over jobs. Globally, EV sales growth slowed to 6% in November. Automakers, including Ford, are scaling back EV plans as consumer demand weakens.
