Why Europe is Stepping Back From Its Electric Car Push | Vantage with Palki Sharma | N18G

The European unx is considering easing its planned ban on new petrol and diesel cars from 2035, a policy agreed in 2023 under the EU’s Green Deal. Reports suggest the zero-emissions requirement may be softened to 90% emissions cut, allowing some petrol and hybrid vehicles beyond 2035. Germany and Italy have pushed for the change, backed by major carmakers. The rethink comes amid slowing electric vehicle demand, high EV costs, strong competition from Chinese manufacturers, and concerns over jobs. Globally, EV sales growth slowed to 6% in November. Automakers, including Ford, are scaling back EV plans as consumer demand weakens.

@vaibhavpatil1983 Electric cars is scam ... Who is gonna benefit from it is Govt and Car makers, how? Govt need not to spend on oil bills, can raise electricity bills as per their wish, whereas car makers will anyways gonna make profit by selling cars. Who is gonna lose? Customers by paying high maintenance for battery cells, by paying high electricity bills etc
@CapitanTiago Europe is old as fuck they cant compete with the modern world. The narrow streets the parking the road the people. Most of us live in a block of flats how are we supposed to charge that shit we cant even find a parking at night
@robertwang7825 It means China already won lol. They just cannot compete and cannot move at the speed of the Chinese in new car development, software, battery tech , quality and price. It really means a slow death. Elon is right , in 5 yrs many ICE automakers will not be around or would have shrunk so much they don’t matter anymore.
@WisemanAnon Chinese car manufactures are more agile and efficient, they can iterate very quickly to release new models, the car assemblies are mainly done by robots with high quality and efficiency, no wonder lefty and righty Europeans feel the pressure and cry uncle now.
@johnwayne8475 Europe wanted to help save the world from climate change, but when they realised they can't compete with China, they abandoned saving the world idea!
@blessingndlovu9037 The West has failed to compete with China and will try by all means to change the narrative
@koiguidenishikigoi4972 If europe and the us want to go back to the stone age and use dinosaur juice. Let them do it. World won't stop for them.
@harshwardhansharma7386 What options do we have in India? The fuel costs are always high, irrespective of the global prices. I would pay the higher cost, given that I get the right kind of fuel, but we all know about Ethanol blending and its impact on engines. Imagine the situation of a person who bought a car just two years ago, and now that engine is non-compliant. We are not in America, we are Indians, buying a car is a big deal for a lot of us. The courts are not listening to us and the government is in cahoots with the auto manufacturers. EV is the only option for Indian car buyers, we'll need a little planning for trips, but unfortunately we can't buy ICE vehicles.
@Vanara-s2w6x But India should focus more on EV. We can't be paying lifetime to arabs and russians. Our growth will be faster and more foreign currency reserves if we focus and invest on EVs
@aholysinner I just did a short research paper on this very topic and what I found was that the Chinese EV industry is running an overcapacity and they want to export their cars to the EU. However, the EU does not want a supply increase of cheap Chinese EVs in their markets, as they would drive European automakers out of business. The European Commission has already imposed high tariffs on Chinese EVs, which is slowing down the supply the Chinese EVs. However, with China's current EV industry situation, they will most likely collaborate with EU automakers to balance the scales, though EV adoption rate is bound to decline.
@Crusherdavid India's growth needs to learn from experience. It has no natural Western allies, nor will it receive any meaningful handouts. Don't trust the self-serving rhetoric of Westerners.
@paulthomas6072 They got screwed by China... So change the rules and then they will preach the world as well...
@robertsest5619 Why? because stupid eu polititians with heads in the clouds realised they can not be more clever than engineers, knowing the reality. if EU engineers will not again take final decission in all spheres (regulations, marketing, design), then EU car industry will colapse. In the world there will never be more than 20% of EV, and EV is and can not be crucial in car business (listen Toyota CEO and other people of kowledge - not political fantasts)
@Vision23023 Simple really, it’s protecting their car industry, because they haven’t been able to produce a decent EV competitive enough against Tesla and Chinese EVs. When it comes to other countries trying to protect their local industries, the EU countries cry foul!
@ThianlangamKamei123 They cant compete with the innovation of Chinese thats all
@baasheep4188 What ever you want petrol diesel or electric, China has it ready for consumer
@wawerukamau1260 Copper and lithium ,used in EV battery manufacturers , prices will fall globally.
@silafaupaulmeredith7251 EU and the West only talked about the Environment when they benefitted. I recall when they set to be Carbon neutral by 2050 and China came out saying they would achieve that by 2060. All western MSM blamed China. Every question to China was about China polluting cities and environmental degradation now all are quiet and even more ironically putting on massive tariffs on Chinese EVs Solar Panels etc.
@garyperry4063 They did the same with diesel cars and what did they do diesel went from 35 p to £1.30 we got conned again
@krishnachandramenon8 Thats the power lobbying, whats the statistics show about the EV market share?
@NassaKhann The 10% is because the rich wont want the scrappy electric cars, they'll want their 5litre turbos
@fanghe-z1j China sells more than 30 million cars every year, and electric vehicles have surpassed fuel vehicles.
@Dawn-xy4qy Battery making elements r not available
@SamuraiJack-q4f As a car enthusiast living in Germany and from the experiences with E.V.’s, the reason for their stall in demand is majorly due to their depreciation value. Another factor is E.V’s don’t give out ranges as mentioned in papers and the unexpected traffic jams makes the energy to loose in a car way faster time. PHEV on the other hand is high in trend.
@divyanshurai4206 I'm leaning towards strong hybrids as the sweet spot! They seem to offer the best of both worlds, giving you that electric boost for city driving and then the familiar gas engine for longer trips. It's like getting a superhero upgrade without completely ditching your trusty sidekick. Plus, you don't have to worry as much about charging infrastructure when you're out exploring. For me, it's the most practical and forward-thinking choice right now.
@hardtruth45 Every time I go out on. a vacation , I am more worried trying to find a fast EV charging station ...and after you find wait for an hour to get it charged ! Next time I am buying a Petrol/diesel car
@filmsknotproductions5516 well i’m a diner and travel really long routes more then 15 hours. so no EVs can’t match that kind of range especially with the time constraints deliveries
@ZashyBoy As a fan of the combustion engine, this a huge W (i don’t support thousands of cars on the road, i think the government should incentivize the people to use public transport by making it faster than taking a car for their commute)
@sriramramaswamy9507 It was not because of economic reason, market and consumers just din’t want it. 10 yrs after this will be same story unless miraculously there is 1000 miles range or electricity is the only energy source available in the world.
@JohnClifford-i2p How long does it take to fill 10 cars with petrol.? How long does it take to charge 10 electric cars.
@harrys4800 Ev on lithium tech was never the solution .. only solution is to find sodium or some other type of battery that can last for long. Till then We need diesel plug in hybrid type tech
@ramus6188 India must opt for EVs and try to reduce cost which would help to curb oil purchase and increase currency value in longer run
@RajashekarReddyKonduru Eu was never the target market, ev are meant for Asia and middle east and Africa- where solar is abundant. They just jumped the gun and learnt some hard lessons by being early adopters. Especially after amputating their energy source from Russia at the behest of their overlords
@-w9q Europe's carbon tax is essentially a tax levied on all countries because Europeans never thought anyone would actually achieve carbon neutrality. But China did, and if this continues. European countries are naturally unwilling to accept this. A Chinese scholar said ten years ago that the carbon tax proposed by European countries is just a pretext, and the real purpose is to tax the world.
@gopikrishnal1425 There should be a single goal and that is to make the Earth habitable even for the generations to come. Myopic economic selfishness and imaginary boundaries between the countries shouldn't be an obstacle for this noble cause
@bluetop-t1z From the information I am getting, BYD wants to pull out from producing electric cars as well, along with Ford, Toyota, Hyundai, Kia, Volkswagen, Stellantis, Renault, and Porsche.
@Torque_bhai In Europe- yes. But in India, it will gain some traction and grow for the next decade or so because of the stupid ethanol issues, lack of govt support towards ICE Vehicles Eventually, if things go well in the future, Hydrogen cars should become mainstream
@Pa1-369 But India it will speed up. Now demand for batterys will go down and supply will remain the same. For countries like India it's a jackpot to reduce pollution.
@GreenNClean Every time such news about EV comes, the reality is that EV adoption is increasing. Check global sales figures for 2025. 10 countries have crossed > 50% EV sales in 2025. More than 30 countries are above 30% mark including the UK.
@ankursharma8534 Corporate Punishment to Environment from it's Strong Political Network lixs. Money can Buy everything in Developed Countries.
@VishwaSunder I believe EV sales will see a growth in India as the price gap between ICE and EV cars are closing in, Thanks to the EV cars tax cut. Also one major reason is the cost of fuel and maintenance, As long as government charges more than 100% as Tax for Petrol and diesel. Conservative and heavy users would still keep EV in their mind during purchase decision.
@Truthseeker371 EV needs to be charged by fossil fueled electricity. How clean and absurd is that!!
@KalpeshPatel78 EVs were never sustainable anyway. What the world needs is a multi-fuel Engine. One that can accept any kind of fuel and run on it.
@MeSuman-c2v Europe is gradually going backwards with the steepest competition coming from China EV production
@saipranay3416 Chineese electric cars are cheaper but also severe quality issues .... especially software and sensors suck
@firstpostcommenter8078 Even in countries like Netherlands which are assumed to be in the forefront of EV vehicle adoption, the number of street parking spots with Electric chargers are abysmal. On one hand governments want to treat EV cars like ICE cars and ask people to charge them in fuel stations but unlike ICE cars the "fuel" cannot be put within 5 minutes. Talk about having your cake and eating it too. Either companies should reduce charging time to 5 minutes (similar to ICE car) or governments make every street car parking spot equipped with charger.
@sivakumaran125 If that is the case sooner than later China will completely take over the automobiles market with its EVs and make other auto makers close their operations altogether if they don't find any solution to tackle this threat
@Sooraj09073 Only China possesses the capability to achieve this. They should provide interest-free loans to nations that adhere to climate policies. Let us consider the global landscape in 2035.
@kingcobralive3081 Hydrogen fuel is the future and india needs to promote it rather than evs where they hv to depend on China.
@shawonew1 simple calculation, no resale value of EV car. Just a scrap after running 7/8 years. Meanwhile fuel engine car can lasts more than decades and can feel like new if well maintained.
@cc_one_world China can move some EV productions to India, some Chinese economists already talking about it. India and China can really work together.
cake7750 Electric bikes have been in China for nearly 20 years, China offers subsidies and play the long game, as of 2025, the electric vehicles are dominating in China and they are trying to reduce the oil dependency (imports) and reduce pollution, Most Importantly, they are not influenced by Oil companies like West or India. India is nearly 2 decades behind with electric bikes and will probably never catch up
@Dani8chs Finally some people that see how we are destroying everything. Guess which country is NOT going to listen to any of this ? My country Norway. Because even if the entire world, 8 billion people, agree on something.... We... These 5 million chosen people, know it better. We WILL ban ICE no matter what it costs us. There is no one in the world of which we would take advice or an example of. We won the lottery one day and now we act like we actually made all that money ourselves with our genius brains Watch us closely the next 2 decades and look how we, even with all our money, manage to ruin our economy and somehow manage to create a living standard for ourselves barely succeeding Easter Europe level.
@prosperity-7-fortune EU and world has no money to spend cash on oil , all countries are struggling only UAE is enjoying all the cash from all over the world
@sidtechster Production cost has to come down. EVs has to be comparatively priced as ICE. And battery tech has to improve a lot. They are still slow charging and unreliable.
@rvarghese2431 If they go with deadline of 2030, almost all cars will be Chinese because of Chinese control over almost all materials used for EV including rare earth's. So slowing down makes sense so that they catch up with the Chinese in these materials. India also reduced GST on cars because too much fast changing to EV means Chinese domination.
@borissergijevic7357 Lithium is old tech now. New batteries gonna use stuff like sea salt. Solar gives plenty power, every home can make their own. We can scale it easy, mix it with thorium nuclear and we good. That’s China’s like 5yr plan… For EU? Maybe 50 yrs if lucky
@War20-4 EV cars green credentials aren’t that green you still need electricity plants to charge, the death and destruction of the environment and human life with nickel battery mining, recycling end of life batteries, expensive compared to petrol cars.
