Very clear USA is one hegemon nation.
First, they were the ones wanted globilisation, then want or pry open China market (for US capitalists), and they were successful indeed, here right ( evidence of  the huge earnings from US Corporations ).
Then, by US hegemon nature went wars on other nations (simply with US ideologies) instead of to spend invest on US itself.
China had planned for growth, development etc. and all in full transparency about China endeavour here.
Now that US seen China progress, development as a threat ( to US hegemon state) - suddenly want to CONTAIN China further development, growth, simply.

President Donald Trump came up with this Tarffi crap again when he made that damn call while everyone was focusing on illegal immigration. Now you tell me ( blind side  hello it wasn't  us the American voters, blame the government and all those politicians up there in the White House. Hell some of us had to look it up and DAMN I'm Speechless.me i am making a survivor pantry of foods and everything before things go up so high we won't be able to buy freaking toilet paper.

those fields formerly plowed and planted will lie fallow; those combines will remain unsold -- john deere is gonna take a huge hit -- and those employees are gonna lose their jobs.
i'm guessing the Chinese will move in and buy up all that farmland.
the small towns will be further hollowed out as people leave.
Most disturbing is that suicides will increase.

North Americans are used to buying well made and affordable finished products from China. US slapping on tariffs to China will make US citizens in the middle and lower income earners suffer economic burdens on their family budgets.

India claims to be the world's largest democracy, but it lags far far behind China in every aspect of social life. One of the reasons why China is so successful is that they don't spend $1.4 billion on an election and don't have two parties constantly fighting each other, they can have long-term plans and carry them out, they don't have a new party comes to power every 4 years and destroys the gains made by previous administration. Your democracy is your downfall.

What American consumers just do not understand is that tariffs on Chinese goods do not hurt Chinese citizens or Chinese businesses. They ONLY impact US citizens by pushing up prices. It seems US consumers (and their presidents) haven't been taught basic economics. When tariffs are levied, those tariffs are imposed and collected at the port of discharge in the USA and then they are added into the price before the goods are sold. The Chinese supplier receives exactly the same amount of money for their goods, the tariffs are not at their end. This effectively is an additional tax collected on US citizens and paid to the US government. It's a tax that is "sold to the US consumer as being a good tax because it hurts China" ... ha ha. If only they learned economics at school !

American businesses need to start looking at the geopolitical situations of the countries they want to do business with.  China and Russia were perfect examples.  In China, American businesses found that doing business there found it intolerable.  90% of American factories were closed and they started looking for other countries in which to move to.  Now China is banning imports from us.  Perhaps we should start sextively banning Chinese imports.  Their economy is almost ready to fail.  This would definitely hurt China.  Perhaps we could get other countries in Europe and the Asian Pacific to join us

You are wrong, many American companies are still investing in China, and even those that were forced to move production lines to places like India and Vietnam regretted their decisions. These countries may have cheaper labor, but their energy supply, infrastructure, logistics, overall stability and quality of work force cannot compare to China. American businesses had suffered due to all the nonsense from the WH.

@RealengoPrimordialDemon  Oh i understand the economy.  Finance major with a minor in economics.  I worked in finance in NYC for over 20 yrs.  Russia can't do anything to get everything they need because of all the sanctions, the decline of the ruble and almost all their money is going to the war effort    As far as American debt, that's only one of our problems.  I know what's coming but even with that we'll always be better off than what Russia is doing to itself.  Oh and you don't think Russia has debt at least several times it's GDP?  It does.  The Russian economy is doomed.

@newcrew4554  If only 10% of manufacturing is still there that's lots of companies.  I haven't seen or heard anything about companies regretting their moves.  On those other factors, that depends on each country of which countries like India, perhaps Mexico, Canada don't have those problems you mention.

@scotts8684  At least, most people now know India is a hell for investors.  I'm sure iphone regrets moving their production to India. China itself is also moving some of the lower-end labor-intensive manufacturing to countries such as  Southeast Asia as they moving up the value chain. Those countries you mentioned still don't have the manufacturing capacities as China has, no to mention China has the most completed industrial system in the world which means all raw materials and components  are easily available in China

I blame Corporate America if they wanted to send jobs overseas they could have easily send jobs to two places Canada and Mexico while opening up shop in the United States and the cost wouldn't have been as much as it is now and we would have been straight and free trade wouldn't be so bad, and North America's GDP would have been astronomical and BRICS wouldn't have a chance.

What's the difference between tariffs and sanctions? They amount to about the same thing. Except they increase cost to it's citizens. The country that impose the sanctions is the looser in this event. It's so much easier to subsidise it own industries to stay competitive.

To address the titular question: anyone without enough sense to realize that a country wallowing in debt and lacking a layered industrial base capable of competing in most sectors and products is not going to “win” a trade war with a country that is a global manufacturing powerhouse.   But hey, get people riled up so they vote, right?

Nice to rebrush on modern Chinese history, yes I noticed China’s tilt towards latam, last year I was watching an Argentine news channel ‘la nacion’ a lot, and the topic of Brazilian and Argentina agriculture expert to China would come up often, also with other nations, and Chinas growing influence in the region.  Trump came to power promising to cut taxes and replace the flow with tariffs on China, we’ll see how this plays out and if China was ahead of the curb?
