The absolute hero who disarmed the gunman…it’s tragic that moments like this also highlight what deters citizens from helping.
He could’ve easily been mistaken for the shooter if authorities arrived at the wrong moment. That’s what makes public shootings so difficult to respond to: in the chaos, you can’t tell who’s the hero and who’s the threat. When people see someone with a gun, they assume that’s the shooter.
This reality alone discourages others from stepping in to help, because doing so puts your own life at risk. You could be killed by the gunman, or mistaken for one and shot by police.
