Yes indeed. I live in Copenhagen, Denmark, and I consider myself to have a broad end educated view of the world.
My experience after a 3 week trip to Shanghai, Hefei and Beijing was that what I have been told about China in western media and education is a very very limited and biased view.
Any westener with a curious and open mind will have a mind-blowing experience in China, and the possibility to get a much more elaborated understanding of Chinese and Asian culture. I highly recommend that.
China is all in all a very safe and friendly country. I completely changed my mind.

I completely agree. I first visited 25 years ago and have visited several times since 2015 to experience the changes and visit friends. China is a Magical place to visit. You need more than a week to experience a little of China which is why I return to learn more.

Same here. I completely lost my respect for the BBC after one day in Beijing, and for the idea that what we are fed in the news in the West is fact, and that the media in China is so restricted no one knows what’s going on.
It is not without its problems, but they are being addressed. One thing it is though is very very safe compared to the west. In 2011 Hong Kong had the lowest murder rate in the world, and I feel equally safe in China, Singapore and Hong Kong.
Remember London has its pea souper fog in the 1950s, Los Angeles has it’s smog in the 1970s, now China is cleaning up its act with more wind turbines in existence and more being installed than any other country in the world, more electric buses than any other country, with the highest rate being in Shenzhen. It’s trains travel at 250kph between cities and a cup of water on the window sill doesn’t even have ripples in it.
Do not believe western media reports; they all know to report something distasteful about China and rarely report the good; it’s what they have always done.

I agree 100%. I recently visited China for 14 days and will plan soon for next trip. I am impressed and people are absolutely beautiful and friendly, I have pictures to prove.

I’m also from Copenhagen, and came to China in 1998, and at that time China was more like what you expected about China, even so it was safe, and people friendlily, but the first three years, ( I had a five year contract ) I could not stop complaining about the Chinese called them all kind of names, anyhow when my contract expired I renewed for another five years, and I stopped somehow complaining, but still I thought Europe was the right place, so after my other 5 years was up I was happy to go leave China behind I though 10 years that is long time, I can not wait to get back to Denmark, so me and my then 7 years old Chinese born daughter went to Copenhagen with happy smile, I got job and happy, but then I started to notice many things about the Danes ( Im one my self ) They like to destroy everything which is nice, graffiti vandalism, chewing gum everywhere, all bus stops vandalized and never cleaned, the Danes like to sit in the buses or trains with their feet on the seats, I was in Mcdonalds Verterbro in a queue and a guy went in front of three people before me, the person in front said very politely, hey we are here first, I think you need to back in the queue, then the guy jumping the queue hit the other guy very hard in his face, the other guy go up and said something I did not her, buy the queue jumper got his knife out, we left without buying, I saw also in the train S-Toget a ticket control asking for tickets and some young guys of other origin than Danish, showed him a knife, there was also someone getting shoot in the city, and Friday night could not take the train, to dangerous so many drunks.. In the year I spend in Denmark with my daughter, we started to miss China, and one day my daughter asked “ Daddy can we not go back to China?” I said yes sure, and we left back to China, where we have been ever since and happy and safe. China is very safe even for young girls can go out by them self, Shenzhen is very clean city well organized, even the bus stops they clean, Shenzhen metro is really clean, and it works always, I have never had problems with delay trains, or the shentong card not working, in Denmark always signal problems and late trains, no let me stay her in China to the end, I see China better and better everyday and Europe going down slowly, but surely.

I completely agree! I was astounded at the architectural sophistication and beauty of modern Shanghai, the friendliness of the Chinese people, and the commitment to renewable energy visible in the fields of wind farms between Beijing and Tianjin. A most impressive country, well worth the visit.

I agree with you completely. I visited Shanghai for the first time ever last August and it completely changed my view of the country. The way it’s portrayed in western media and movies is so different from what it actually is; a very modern and organized mega city.

I was s frequent visitor to China in recent past for academic purpose. What I gathered is that Chinese cities are possibly the safest to move around under the sun. I once asked a Chinese girl student in Nanjing university if she is nt scared of returning to their univ. hostel around 2 am in the morning. She just could nt follow my question. May be it was more difficult to grasp than what I was teaching them in physics classes.

It’s true that China is safe and friendly because our traditional culture is consist of peace and love. Welcome more and more foreign friends could travel to China for few days at least and you will know a real China different from your old imagination.

Yes I changed my mind about China. Really different from what I read on the media.
I visited Beijing on July 2019 for a business trip. As a Muslim woman that wear scarve, I prepared myself that people may treated me differently when I'm going to non-Muslim countries, or the country that I heard have Islamophobia.
And when I finally arrived there, surprisingly, everyone I met is very nice to me. They don't even give me too much attention so I'm very comfortable being there.
When I'm in visa section at the airport, the conversation between me and the officer going well. He even smile at me, wow. He have the right to not be that nice because it's visa section right, and I'm woman with scave, etc. And it's normal to not treated me nicely, considering what I read on the media and all that stereotype about the relation between Chinese people and the Muslim I heard.
I'm really surprised too, when do the formal meeting with the officer of the government. They prepared the corner nice place to do afternoon pray and they prepared halal food too. All of that is not our request, they offering it first. And we are very happy about that.
That just the two example from so many stories from my 6 days trip in China. All of that experience made me changed my mind completely about China.

I’m a Muslim with headscarf too. I visited China in 2019 with my family and we had a pleasant experienced there too. Ya, Chinese in China are not obsessed with headscarves in a matter of fact the local Hui Chinese had headscarves with lots of blx-blx and beads, It showed that they have no reason to hide their headscarves. In Beijing Niujie mosque we even saw the locals having religious lesson in the mosque.

Oh my god, how dare the Chinese treat Muslim people with such kindness! You should complain to the UN of such total disregard for human rights! :)
Now do you see the fake news being peddled by the west and how dangerous it is? By constantly painting China in such negativity it subconsciously reduce the desire of people actually visiting the country to see the truth and thus people will never find out everything said is a big fat lie.
Anyway, glad you enjoyed your trip. Hopefully you can visit again and see the many beautiful mosques there all over the country!

As a Muslim I found the same media and government of countries that had slandered and continue to slander Muslims are now doing the same to the Chinese. Suddenly they are so concern of not only Muslims but Chinese Muslims. We should not give them too much credit they lie all the time. Treat them like the liars that they are as such whatever they say take it with pinch of salt, do our own research if we are interested to know more.

Yes, I did.
I had learned a little about Chinese history (I’m Australian), and I had a close friend at work who was from Shanghai, but being there…
I felt like I was part of making history just be setting foot on the land. I could feel its age, something I didn’t get in Europe, even in Greece or Rome.
I’ve been back 3 times now, once to stay and work, a single parent with two small kids - yes, absolutely crazy, and not something I’d necessarily recommend - but now China is in my blood. It’s not just a foreign country - it’s an alien planet. Everything just works so differently, and getting around is extremely challenging - like the day I wanted to catch the train half an hour along the track, and it took most of the day, and trying to catch a plane to discover that our flight was an ex-Aeroflot (yes, I’ve been to Russia, and Aeroflot was scary before the Russians decided to discard them) departing from a military base on the other side of town with no food supplies…
Besides being full of friendly, wonderful people, it is the most extraordinary and amazing place. The geography is beyond descxtion - I’ve only seen a little myself, but a lot of google searching for a story has shown some of the breadth of the country - the country is so vast, so loaded with history and time…
Today I crane to listen to anyone speaking Chinese (especially Mandarin) because the sound of the language gives me thrills, even though I didn’t manage to get much past greetings. I love the written language (which I already knew a bit of from Japanese). The buildings and the geography always leave me breathless. The country is just so vast, crosses so many different cultures and terrains, the history as fascinating as anywhere on the globe - so much of what we take for granted was invented in China long before in the west, and the people I met - in Suzhou, an hour west of Shanghai - were so friendly and warm and wonderful…
I had learned a bit of 20th century Chinese history at school, but the country is just so, so much more than that. Go there with an open mind, let go of western values like time, privacy, etc, and be amazed.
