China has really undeserved image

Hello to everybody. I habe been to China recently and frankly almost all stereotypes turned out to be false. I have been to Shenzhen, Nanjing and Shanghai, so its not like these cities are small. I have been to India, after that I keep my expectations very low. Expected Chinese to he a bit rude. All the time I needed help, for example to get wifi or pay with qr in subway, they forgot about their work and helped me. Sometimes I had problems with payments, nobody has raised voice and patiently waited. One guy at a cafe even helped me to order and pay with good English. Maybe I got lucky, but I think "Chinese are rude" is just myth.I had given a place to an old guy in Shanhai subway, later something has fallen out my pocket and this guy and oyher habe pointed out that I need to pick up my things from the floor.
Next, smoking in public and being loud. I have seen some of this but not that much as they say on the internet. Maybr older people are louder but it is not a thing that makes me think "oh, I shouldnt return to China". Historical sites are top-notch and not that expensive. I am a history buff so for China is the sexiest country in that respect. I especially enjoyed that I could pay for sites by alipay or trip com or qunar.
Taxis are so cheap and almost always available in the vicinity. I have stayed in remote places sometimes due to China's holidays at the time and even there taxis have been available in 2-5 minutes. Crazy. In south-east Asia or India sometimes I had to wait 10-20-30 minutes due to cancellations.
Alipay is really a savior in China. I couldnt get wechatpay but even Alipay is good enough for most places. They have lots of mini-apps that can help you to pay right jn alipay. Very convineint. The only problem is sometimes mini-apps didnt get any translation. I know Chinese but some words there complex so I had to use another phone to translate.
Overall, I think China is an amazing destination, Chinese people are kind, helpful, smart. It doesnt deserve such publicity. What do you think, is there a significant bias against China?

It's because most people have only been exposed to Chinese tourists, and when they're out being tourist, they act a lot different. In China, when they recognize you are a visiting outsider, I think they go out of their way to help you more often than not.
I once bought a standing-only ticket on a slow train and quickly was given a seat and then four different students fell asleep on my lap and shoulder.

I know I’m so so confused why / how the tourists are sooo rude, selfish but people within China are so polite??? (I only went to gz)

Look at how American tourists or British holidaymakers behave on occasion. Those examples are a long way from the people I have met while working and traveling in their countries.
You could travel to my country and encounter open racism and ignorance but that doesn't represent the norm I'm glad to say.

I think it's largely because there are many Chinese tourists, so there's a larger pool of them compared to tourists from other countries. Also I've been told that there's a urban rural divide when it comes to manners (this is by no means universal but I've been told it's present particularity with older generations). Those "rural" people have more disposable income these days so they can travel abroad more easily. This might explain some of this reputation although I think the issue is exaggerated, I worked in a job that dealt with tourists a lot and I rarely had issues with people from China.

Because of bias and stereotypes.
when people see an Asian doing something rude, they often assume he’s Chinese, even if he’s from another country. But if the person is polite, people often assume he’s Japanese

I think when you have paid a lot of money for a foreign holiday you will act more entitled. It’s really the same for most nationalities

The travelling ones tend to be rich and have an entitled attitude. The worst are the young(er) ladies with a princess complex
They can be kind of rude when acting in the capacity of tourists in China - line cutting, letting the kids run wild.
Tremendous_Dump
I would go further to say most Chinese I have met (having lived there) are incredibly warm, kind hearted, well intentioned and generally nice to a fault. What most people i know perceive as rude is a stunning lack of self-awareness, but very rarely is it out of malice.
Few bad eggs notwithstanding
nap_napsaw
Yes, I agree. Also there is propaganda campaign against China, dont know who is behind it.
I have seen some Chinese tourists, they are mostly fine but some of them cause the trouble and then add to the bad image their tourists have.
I agree with you that in China they are completely different.
bdd6911
Yeah it isn’t the tourists. We have many Chinese in LA. They are fine and no complaints. It’s the propaganda. All bs international jockeying between governments. Chinese are fine. Like everyone else.

Well, the US is openly spending $1.6bn on anti-China narratives so that might be part of it.
nap_nasaw
Yes, how much do they spend secretely - that is the real question. Anyway, those who go there say it is not how China is pictured so at least they wont be brainwashed

I had my first post-pandemic trip to China last month (having travelled there extensively for work and pleasure since 2005). The most striking thing to me is just how distorted the picture of China in western media has become (I live in London & Amsterdam).

My family and I LOVE living and traveling in China. Magical landscapes, fantastic and affordable food, and absolute luxury at an affordable price. The Ritz where I live is $125 a night in the off season
nap_napsaw
Wow $125 fpr that is really cheap. Even I habe stayed in a good hotel in Shanghai 10 minutes walk distance for like $15 per night. Btw yes, food options are quite varied, I habe eaten a new dish every time.

There is absolutely a bias. I also think people look at China in a 'back then' lens and simply don't know how rapidly China developed in the past 2 decades. In the west, we haven't moved all that much in the past 2 decades (and have even regressed in some ways) but China has progressed in leaps and bounds.
nap_napsaw
Yes, dont underestimate your adversary. Unfortunately, the USA and EU have been doing and even now trear China as a country where they make shitty products for low prices. Its not like that anymore. China has top-notch products in most major fields from phones to EVs.

I also just got back from China after traveling all over for 3 weeks and gad very similar experience. I was shocked at how nice most everyone was. There was one point where my brother and I had walked the wrong way after taking a train to a new place, very small town. Our host had sent us directions that were just pictures to lead us to them. So we were trying to find the images they sent us as we walked through the city. The problem was the images got sent out of order so we kept getting turned around. We ended up on this road just walking alone and this guy way down the street far away starts yelling at us and walking towards. It starts making me nervous as he keeps coming towards us yelling, but he was t yelling angrily from what I could tell. Anyways… back home in the USA I would definitely have turned the other way or crossed the street to get away. We let him come up to us and we pulled out translate all and all he said is “where are you trying to go”. I was like … how’s this guy even know we’re lost, we’re just walking down a street lol. I assumed he was going to try to scam us or convince us to pay him to take us to the place. We showed him the images and the picture of the final destination. He started giving us Directions and even started walking with us to show us, the entire time I’m still on edge thinking there is a catch or some angle he’s working. He walks us half way there points out where we need to go, makes sure we know we need to take the next left and then a right, and then he just goes the other direction and starts walking back the way he came… I was just dumbfounded that this complete stranger went that far out of their way to help us get to our lodging and we hadn’t even asked for help..

I'll agree that the image is a bit distorted. And there are cultural differences we need to take into account. But there is absolutely smoking everywhere lol. Restrooms are smoking rooms, restaurants that aren't in tier 1 cities are fair game, even indoors in my bullding (in Beijing no less) people occasionally smoke. The worst place I've seen was inside of the pediatric hospital, again, in Beijing. The line cutting can be annoying which happens everywhere as well.
And it is loud. People absolutely do listen to their phone at full volume on speakerphone everywhere. Again, cultural differences. Normal here. Very annoying for me though but this is how they do things here. Loud megaphone blasting awesome deals for photo services or foods that vendors are selling at any tourist place. Again, Chinese people can't even hear it. They can tune it out. I cannot and it takes me out of the moment and I'm not a fan
But I wouldn't say they're unkind or anything like that. And it is very affordable and convenient once you get past the app/mini program barrier
RysloVerik
Hard disagree on the loudness and smoking.
It's just a cultural norm for people to talk over each other like it's an Italian Christmas dinner. In regards to smoking, compared to many western countries, they allow it everywhere.

I just got back from a trip to SEA including Beijing and Shanghai and fully agree with your observation. China left a lasting impression on us because of its history and pristine culture. We went to one of those imperial banquet shows and we were in awe. Japan on the other was always praised for its cleanliness and polite hospitality but we had the worst experience with rude Japanese people kicking our luggage out of the way on the Tokyo metro. Also the kids were rude when we visited Tokyo Disneyland. We found the politeness Japan is often praised for almost fake whereas Chinese people were genuinely nice and helpful. Often going out of their way to help us out, while the Japanese made us feel like we were a huge burden. Not to bash Japan but China wins for its authenticity, intact culture and welcoming people. The technology is far more superior too.
iseeyou19
I heard a quote recently that matches your experience: “Japanese people are polite but not kind whereas Chinese people are kind but not polite.”
