According to Singapore’s Lianhe Zaobao, the Vietnamese government plans to begin construction on two high-speed rail lines connecting Hanoi to China by 2030. This ambitious plan involves building a 1,545-kilometer high-speed rail system, with an estimated cost of $72 billion, equivalent to 17% of Vietnam's GDP.
The Vietnamese Ministry of Transport announced that one high-speed rail line will extend from Hanoi to Lang Son Province, bordering China’s Guangxi region, while the other will connect Hanoi to Lao Cai Province, bordering China’s Yunnan region. This line will pass through the port city of Haiphong and Quang Ninh Province, home to Ha Long Bay. These two high-speed rail lines are seen as significant steps in modernizing Vietnam's transportation network, enhancing connectivity with China, and supporting overall economic development goals.
The North-South High-Speed Rail concept in Vietnam is not new. In 2006, during a visit to Japan, then-Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung received a substantial commitment from the Japanese government for development aid. However, the project faced intense debate and was eventually rejected in 2010 due to its high cost and unaffordable ticket prices.
Fast forward to 2023: Vietnam’s per capita GDP reached $4,200, and the urbanization rate hit 41%, comparable to China’s level between 2008 and 2010. In April 2024, the Ministry of Transport announced plans for two high-speed rail lines. This development is part of the Red River Delta strategy to strengthen transportation infrastructure, reduce congestion, and promote economic growth.

China alone accounts for more than 70% of the worlds High Speed Rail. It's HSR system is the most advanced in the world and everything is built indigenously; everything single item down to the smallest screw and washers are sourced from China. Speed cannot be beaten, Quality cannot be beaten, Affordability cannot be beaten.
And Japan isnt even an actual country, its a US military outpost/colony lol.....having them build you something will take 10x as long, 10x as expensive and is always just one suggestion (from its Master the US) to halt the project all together without any explanation.

Given how long the Japanese have been building the Metro systems in Vietnam, this news is hardly surprising. The speed of progress has been more akin to the first steam train rather than a Shinkansen. China will probably have it built within a few years.

From the clip, I understand that the agreement between Vietnam and China is building two railway lines in the north of Vietnam bordering China to the port city of Haiphong only. Not the entire railway line between Hanoi n HCM city.
That, the Japanese is still working it out.
Let them take their time.
The China to Thailand Central line is more important for China as it goes all the way to the Malay Peninsula.

Vietnam government made the right choice to choose China in high-speed railway. Vietnam is China neighbour and both are socialist countries. China can deliver the railway system on time, and both sides will prosper in trade and cultural exchange.

The U.S. economy is on the way down unless u r too naive to believe otherwise.! The U.S. national debt is well above $35 trillion up todate & climbing fast on a daily basis. The U.S. has been printing more money into its economy but without any real backing for its dollar value except with its national debt. The petrodollar is losing its position as the standard currency exchange in the oil world to the Brics preference for using their members acceptance of each other currency exchanges. Saudi Arabia & China agreed on using each other’s currency for any oil transactions, and the same for Russia on such agreements.!

smart choice. With Japan, you pay more than double and it takes twice or three times longer to complete - doubtfull if it would even be completed at all. Also, Japan is a US vassal, so if the US does not like you in the future, the US would pressure Japan to sanction you and you'll end up with a train system that can't be maintained and operated properly.

Japan’s construction is fast, but China is even faster. Vietnam has agreed with Japan to build the HSR in 2010 (when China is not that good at HSR projects), now nothing was materialised after 14 years. If they have awarded to China, they would have HSR running now.

You don't know what you are talking about.China built HSR for North, Japan built for the South. Both started about the same time. China completed for the North while Japan was falling behind schedule over at least a year and over run the budget.
