It’s a big question which associated with Equality of Education,Teenage sex, and School bullying.

But China’s main society boycott those beautiful uniforms.
First, Education Equality
Poor school and Rich school, poor kids and rich kids
those could be distinguished by their uniforms
Different high and low price uniforms will running into class discrimination chaos.
So, Chinese choose using low price uniforms in all provinces and cities.

Second, teenager Sex
A social Research tell us, beautiful clothes, longer hair will directly improve pregnancy rate around Young Students.
This is unacceptable for a Chinese parents.
So Chinese school uniforms choose Low design, and don not have any gender difference.
Boys wearing same clothes as girls, and no sexy elements at all.
Third, school bullying
In a Confucism society, students are actully have a high level in people’s mind.

All Chinese society hate school bullying much more than many other countries.
Bully always started from Appearance Differentiation.
Different Appearance makes kids joined different groups, those little groups always try to pepel others.
So, Chinese banned other clothes in School, even more, Chinese banned Students have extra stylized accessories.
Many school even banned any kind of pendant decorations.
Bonus Time
For those who really wanna see special Chinese school clothes.
Those mainly happend in School Autumn Sports Meeting

There is a practical element to it as well where it can be used in both classroom and PE lessons. No need to change and it saves the parents from buying several uniforms. And most parents will buy oversized uniforms because kids grow up fast.

MeaCulpa
Indeed that is poverty lacking lockers and changing rooms, lacking air conditioning and heating leads to this. Energy consumption wise, not bad

Frank Gao
True that. When I was in school in Shandong the uniform is navy blue Adidas style track suit plus converse style shoes. I say “Style” because they were generic off-brands. My street clothing were for weekends and holidays. When my children saw my school pictures the first comment is “why you look so awkward?” and then “why you always wear the same clothes?”. Those are the good old days!

Robert Blake
Honestly, the cheaper uniforms are way cooler.

Chihao Zhou
These uniforms are cheap because the government subsidizes them, so all families can afford to buy at least two sets of uniforms.
The quality of these clothes is great. The fabric of these clothes is strong and very comfortable. I never wore any of my school uniforms growing up. I still have one junior high school uniform, even though at 35 years old I have long since outgrown it. I actually hate suits and ties, the loose and comfortable sportswear is the best for rest and work. Unfortunately, the adult world is not as equal and free as school time.

It makes sense, i was schooled in Europe, we had no uniform, the cloth style creates major differences between kids, my best friend had bad cloth, often too small and bad shoes. I had mainly cheap runners while other kids would show off their Michael Jordan shoes and maybe ended up getting robbed, some girls dress very provocative just for the sake of it, other's dress code got bullied etc etc anyway kids dont need cool cloth to go to school!! Actually, this reminds me of some guy in my class who came with brand new sport cloth of whatever brand TOTALLY WHITE for a PE Rugby lesson so well he got tackled several times and went home with his white pants totally green from the grass he even complained to the teacher and of cours the teacher did give a shit.

At least here in Shenzhen it's been common practice for students to tweak their shapeless uniforms, making the shirts shorter and the pants more shapely so they can look less unfashionable. Boys and girls do this.
Perhaps there's a benefit in this, that everyone learns some basic sewing skills?

Esila Rali
That also happens in schools that have a business casual dress code or uniform (white button ups, gray slacks/skirts, black shoes, ties, blazers). Boys and girls either find a way to either look fashionable by using colorful undershirts that pop under the white button ups, wore colorful ties, accessorized, played with the hems of skirts/shirts, etc….
Basically, kids will find a way to make a dress code work for them to either look good on them or make them more comfortable.

Kazuaki Shimazaki
Those uniforms don’t look that bad - in fact, they look more comfortable and easier to put on than the shirt-type uniform (complete with tie) my school had.

This is a great program for schools. I wish all schools around the world had these rules. Schools in USA are so bad for the kids and is getting worse. Anything can happen there and parents don't even know!!

School in US is all about individualism hence differentiation. But, this is a fundamental difference between the 2 cultures.
It eventually leads to very different methods in both countries when in dealing with rest of the world.

In my country most schools don't have uniforms which I've always loved because I think they're uncomfortable and I've never liked skirts, in fact I haven't worn one since I was 11. But these uniforms that look like tracksuits and that don't force girls to wear skirts seem very comfortable and dignified, wearing one of them would not have seemed like a divine punishment to me in the way the stiff uniforms with collared shirts, jackets, skirts, and uncomfortable shoes in schools in Korea, Japan, and other countries around the world seem to me.

I am from India, but I really love Chinese school uniform because they are gender neutral and comfortable, I wish every school around the world should follow this dress code

I agree with this schooling system . Why uniforms need to be stylish anyway? It's School, a public institution where students will learn discipline and would be treated equally so in future, they become a good person & a responsible, disciplined citizen.
And uniforms are meant to be equal for everyone in an institution. Because it's called “UNIFORM” . A universal dress code. So,making it stylish will completely contradict the meaning of Uniforms.

Justin Zhao
So that is way better than in the west. Over here in Australia this is how it works. 200 dollars for a school shirt. 200 dollars for a school jumper. 200 dollars for a school sport shirt. And then 200 for a school sport jumped. And then 200 for a school pants. And 200 for a school sport pants. And then you have the short variant. And then you have a tie. Then a belt. Then a grade 12, final year jersey, special uniform 500 dollars with everyone’s name on it….

Justin Zhao
Oh and then the super funny thing is the winter uniform isn’t warm so everyone just rocks up in casual jumpers. In China if you do that, mate you aren’t even walking through the school gates lmfao.

I kinda like these cheap uniforms. Simple, no tie, no blazer, can be used for PE as well. I wish my school has this outfits, instead of tucked in long shirt and a tie.

I think the main reason is that these clothes are convenient for sports. Actually, in my high school, we wear the 'sport' uniform daily, but we do have uniforms similar to the first two pictures, which were usually used for some special activities. Recently, my high school has set up a so-called uniform day, and during that day, students are required to wear that special-designed uniform. However, most students complain because they have to change cloth before going to PE classes.

Despite being such a good salesperson for cheap uniforms, the rationale actually made total sense. It’s a little different in places like Canada where we barely even notice class despite everyone wearing different clothes. Over here, bullying happens typically by the low grade kids. In Asia, those guys won’t have a chance to flourish as they’d be the outcast. You guys have your own customized issues to deal with and is probably just as bad as here. People are people after all no matter the location.

I remember when I went to school in Taiwan in 1948–1949, they were introducing school uniforms. The rationale is equality and preventing differences between wealth and non-wealth. I guess KMT and CCP have the same mentality then.

Honestly I love the Chinese uniforms! I went back to China for a year in middle school because my parents wanted me to learn more about where I came from, so I went to school there. The uniforms are comfortable, look good on most people, are breathable in the summer and cool in the winter. We didn’t have time to change for gym class either so the styling made our lives a lot easier!

There was controversy at my kids’ private school in New York City over uniforms in middle school. Now, these are kids from the very richest families in America, perhaps the world. Middle school girls are at their worst in terms of ostracizing and bullying other girls, usually having to do with status (not always, but still a big concern), designer clothes etc. The school would not bend to mandate uniforms, citing research that showed the wearing of uniforms had no effect on incidences of bullying. Instead, it was argued that preteens needed the freedom to make personal choices. I argued for uniforms, but in the end I agreed.
THIS is the difference between democracy and a communist state. As trivial as it may seem. Choice and personal freedom.

Here I can see that China has a model that is very good. Having uniform that is simple yet functional to me is crucial. Boys and girls sure wear the same thing as it's a school and it's a uniform (uniform means that everyone looks the same) simple as that

Vrianilla
Agree, as a Chinese, when I study before in China our uniform wasn’t so “aesthetic” like Japanese or Korean uniform, doesn’t mean we are bad in clothing, the importance was not about how pretty is your outfit, importance is comfort and provide some “nasty” views mostly girls’ dress, dresses are not allowed shorter than knee, because showing up too much your leg skin it might cause problem, and perhaps is a school, not a model show.

Lis L
All schools should have plain uniforms, so students can focus on study/exercise without being distracted or bullied. However, requiring girls to cut their hair short is too much.

I guess China base on substance than looks. Pretty on the outside but nothing inside.

Yaozhou Follow
The main reason is that in many countries, parents have very limited influence over school decisions.
This is especially true when dealing with private, elite, or prestigious schools, where institutional authority often overrides parental opinions.
In China, however, parents tend to be more assertive and harder for schools to negotiate with.
Their expectations are straightforward: school uniforms should be inexpensive and should not be replaced frequently.
As a result, schools and education authorities prefer to choose loose and affordable uniforms, so that even if children grow taller within a year, they can continue wearing the same set the next year.

Honestly, it might be just due to mindset differences, tradition and money.

Ok those are the ones you see in the dramas, the uniforms in the dramas are usually prettier than the ones they wear in real life, but the ones in real life are just as revealing. Here’s a few ‘real life’ pics that you can easily find on Korean instagrams:

Let’s face it, these school uniforms are huge part of Korea/Japanese culture. In numerous KPop videos, Anime, Dramas etc School uniforms are a heavy feature of them. Because, yes they are very pretty and remind girls of their youth.
Heck there’s even an entire show built around celebrity guests coming on the show and wearing them (Knowing Bros). Here’s BLACKPINK for example:
China does not have such a school uniform culture because their uniforms are not that good looking and look more like track suits and not something you would ever want to wear outside of school.
Edit: Some have been asking for it… so here are Chinese uniforms

Quite a bit sexier than the short skirts in Taiwan, Japan and Korea right….?
Many Chinese commenters have already commented about the reasons why saying things like
-Chinese prefer to focus on education than on looks
-Chinese don’t want to distract the guys in school
-Chinese don’t want to look too provocative
Neither of these make much sense, because Korean and Japanese students study just as much as Chinese students do - sometimes even more because their society is more competitive than China’s - and they have similar high school exams to get into universities - so the implication that Korean/Japanese students don’t focus on their education as much as Chinese is definitely false.
(Koreans/Japanese have a higher percentage of their workforce with higher education compared to China because they are more urbanized, don’t have as many rural workers, have a smaller population which increases competition and in Korea’s case they almost certainly have to learn English as well to be at least be considered for the same jobs as everyone else. Also generally theres more work opportunities in China thats why many Koreans/Japanese learn Chinese and go there for work)
Why South Koreans are trapped in a lifetime of study

The second point is also quite bizarre because it’s not like you are seeing teenage pregnancy rates in Korea and Japan that are much different from China’s. It would be interesting to see what percentage of students are having sex in high school in Korea/Japan compared to China, but I would imagine it is not so different. The Asian culture between the three countries is quite similar. It’s not like America, where teenage pregnancies are through the roof - and that’s a country that doesn’t enforce school uniforms (pretty or not) at all! If Korean and Japanese men were constantly distracted in school, then how were they able to get any studying done? To the point where Japan is currently the world’s 3rd largest economy and Korea is in the top 10? Also the fact that Korea/Japan have lower birthrates than China and their population is shrinking as a result? So this point makes no sense either.
I will note that Chinese culture is a lot of conservative sexually than Korean or Japanese culture. In Japan, porn is totally legal and widespread. In Korea, there is lots of sex scenes in a lot of movies and dramas and adult shops are commonly seen. China censors or bans sex everywhere. The main form of entertainment in Korea is having girls dance around in sexy outfits on a stage (Kpop) or even at a wedding (Chukmu) - this is not the case in China.

For the third point I think it might be true that Chinese think that wearing revealing outfits is more provocative than Koreans/Japanese. But this might also be due to mindset. It’s not like Chinese girls don’t wear short skirts after all - they do in the summertime - but maybe not as frequently as Korean or Japanese girls wear them. They certainly don’t wear them in the wintertime as much as Koreans or Japanese do. Still, I don’t think that there is a major difference with regards to showing legs. In all three countries, short skirts is very very common. Showing leg is not considered provocative in Korea or Japan and I don’t really think it is in China either, judging from the outfits I commonly see in China. so I don’t understand this point either.
The only reason I can give is just that’s what Chinese schools gave their students to wear and they felt no need to change it throughout the years because looking prettier wouldn’t increase their rate of learning or anything. It’s not practical to give them prettier outfits. Sure it would be better looking and more attractive. But unless China wants to compete with Korea/Japan in the high school dramas, it’s not really a necessary thing for them. Also, we have to remember that the average Chinese is poorer than the average Korean/Japanese and probably can’t afford to buy an expensive school uniform. School uniform costs are notably a sticking point for Korean and Japanese students. So the money could be another factor.
However for the expensive Beijing or Shanghai schools, I don’t see any reason why they couldn’t afford a prettier uniform.
(Edit: I actually wonder if money is a factor though, because even Thailand has better looking school uniforms than China, and they are poorer than China).

Well, according to some of my friends from mainland China, they love the tracksuits, as they’re amazingly comfortable, it’s like wearing pyjamas to school. There’s also a formal set that looks similar to the Japanese or Korean set that isn’t worn as often. Here’s an elementary school and a high school respectively.

I don’t doubt they are comfortable. But you know often comfortable means ugly lol. Uncomfortable means pretty. No girl thinks wearing high heels is comfortable but they are pretty so they wear them. People think hoodies and yoga pants are super comfortable but you would never wear that to impress someone.

And why exactly are we trying to look pretty at school? I thought school was a learning place. If you say “to look good”, then if people are more self conscious about how they look instead of how comfortable they are, then something is most definitely wrong. “To make more friends” that excuse reminds me about a movie that says “The inside matters but the outside is what they see first”. It’s true but it obviously means that “beauty matters more” LOL. “To catch guys” I read your comments and one of them said “I’ve seen some girls wearing them (skirts) so short you could see their panties and Korean guys around me did not care they were all just looking at their phones and stuff”.

Legs are a real cultural shock when I went to China. Brazilian girls are a lot more prudish in regards to showing theirs thighs than Chinese girls (at least “dry” situations, not on a beach or swimming). On the other hand, Brazilians tend to show a lot more of their cleavage than the Chinese.

Western women in general show more cleavage than Asian women, while Asian women show off their legs more. It has to do showing off your endowments and what God gave you. In general Western women are bustier and Asian women are more slender. Hence…

Where did you live in Brasil? While short skirts aren’t maybe as common, short shorts compensate by being exceptionally common everywhere I lived, and apart from the rare very religious person, nearly every girl in my university wore short AND cleavage revealing clothing to parties in the summer.

Good answer! I also think it’s mainly financial, but the cultural side (if you would call it that) is worth considering too.
I think that those three points you mentioned do make sense and go some way to explain the tracksuits … in their own context. Basically, Chinese people think: that education > looks, and are against provocative clothing. In other words, I suspect that it felt right at the time, and keeping things as they were, so long as they don’t prove a bigger nuisance than the act of changing that thing, also feels right.

Again its funny that they would think its more provocative than Koreans and Japanese do. China is known to be a more open minded country than both and yet when it comes to showing skin they are more conservative. Go figure.
Koreans often wear uniforms this short
and nobody says a thing about it. I’ve seen some girls wearing them so short you could see their panties and Korean guys around me did not care they were all just looking at their phones and stuff.

In Korea, there was a time when people once asked me to wear plainclothes instead of school uniforms.
By the way, students in rich houses wore very expensive clothes, and students in poor houses were marked with cheap clothes, creating discrimination and educationally bad.

Well from my personal observation, China has track suits for their uniform so that there won't be slash between the poor and rich. You can't expect all people of the same neighborhood to be rich. Plus the China government knows such tracksuits encourage the students to engage in physical activities. I'm not saying or degrading any uniform. What im saying is it's a wise way for Chinese government to use such uniforms for the slash between rich and poor could cause a huge drama

I am just wondering if the shorter skirts have any effect in obesity or eating disorders among the girls

It creates a fairer environment because these school uniforms are relatively cheap. There are a lot of poor families in China that qualify waiving tuition fees. It would be financially infeasible to support them with stupidly expensive school uniforms. Making all public school students wear these cheap uniforms protect the poor both financially and mentally.
On the other hand, in private schools in China, the uniforms are more in fashion.

I actually really like the Chinese school uniforms. They just look sooooo comfortable. I would be so happy if Australian school uniforms were like that but ours just look really ugly AND uncomfortable

Young Japanese actually have high rates of celibacy or soloist sexual practices…. The trend is now spreading to Korea 15–20 years later.

I am neither Korean nor Chinese, but I can tell you that full suits as school uniform is uncomfortable. You need ironed shirts, you will be cold in winter, you can’t sit comfortably, etc. Our kids pressured school administration for a long time to be allowed to wear pants instead of skirts for girls. Now mostly, state or private, our (Turkish) uniform is pants or skirts, polo shirt and cardigan or fleece jackets on top. Colours vary.
