Congress would refuse to give the President the declaration of war that is needed, so the military would be forced to disobey this illegal order. There is no way conservatives want to add 123 million Mexicans to the population of the U.S. Nor do they (fortunately) have the stomach for GENOCIDE. So your proposed invasion is politically impossible. This invasion, if done unilaterally by the President, would be stopped internally before any significant territory could be taken. It is naïve to imagine the U.S. is a single-minded entity that can just do things like this on whim. That's not how collections of people work.

The US has invaded Mexico 14 times. During the war that President James K. Polk provoked with Mexico for the express reason of taking territory from Mexico and expanding slavery in the west, the US occupied Mexico city for 8 months and flew the US flag over the National Palace in the Zocalo - this ended when Mexico was finally forced to sign a treaty that ceded half of their territory to the US. The last time the US invaded Mexico was during the Revolution in 1914 - once when it tried to capture General Pancho Villa and again when it occupied the port of Veracruz. The US may have conveniently forgotten this history, but every Mexican school child learns this history.

We would curb-stomp the shit out of whoever attacked them, and we wouldn’t stop until there was nothing left of the invader to bury. Nobody on earth besides us is allowed to insult our fifty- second state, let alone attack it. PS. Im sorry, this answer was too funny from the Canadian version, that I had to put it here. But really Mexico is an important trade partner to the US and an important ally, even if there is no alliance treaty. Many Americans go there for vacation. Regardless of what racist people might have you think, we Americans really like Mexico and wish the best for them. So in short, we would help them.

Mexico's military and government would be royally, monumentally fucked… For a while. There's no question about the fact that the American military is the. Best. In. The. World. And Mexico is a peaceful country that has traditionally been a U.S. ally, so it's had no incentive to plan for that particular scenario; quite the opposite. Up until very recently, we (Mexicans) were fairly confident that our army could deal with aggression from any single one of our southern neighbors except Brazil (which is too far anyway), and that, should a stronger foreign power invade Mexico, then maybe our 2 most important trading partners might see a threat to their business interests (and/or their borders) and maybe, just maybe, divert a plane wing or two to help and that would be the end of that.
But if the U.S. (or Canada, for that matter) were serious about winning a war of attrition against Mexico, the odds against Mexico are so astronomical, our military doesn't even bother to plan for it. Which is exactly why Mexico's foreign relations strategy with the U.S. has been one of broadening the strategic alliance.
Having said that, Mexico can and has earned a lot of favor with the international community. Mexican governments, despite belonging to different party affiliations, have historically earned a reputation for leaving everybody alone but at the same time being friendly and reliable to help when shit hits the fan (like when we deployed our military to deliver emergency supplies and aid in the Haitian earthquake, or even during Hurricane Katrina).
Because of this reliance on diplomacy, Mexico also has a fairly strong background of training good diplomats and public international lawyers, who would probably take it on themselves to make the war as difficult and expensive for Americans as they could. In the process, the war would be publicly known.
Bear in mind that the international community became a thing precisely as a result of the lessons learned from 1939. Starting a war for kicks and giggles is pretty much the definition of a crime of aggression. So I don't think other countries' response to such a thing would be the same.
Furthermore, once the Mexican government is overthrown come the difficulties of keeping your standing army in the role of an occupation force, while people assimilate the occupation -or resist it. The Vietnam War proved that occupying a country does not always equal a victory if the locals will resist you enough. How bitter would a Mexican resistance be would probably depend much on how the Americans conducted themselves during the war.
Lastly, I am going to assume for the purpose of this question that the country that suddenly becomes possessed of this unexplained bloodlust is the U.S. with its current demographics. If that's the case, then we would have to account for an important number of Mexican-American dual citizens, or second and third-generation Mexican descendants with claim to a Mexican nationality/citizenship and/or family in Mexico. I don't think they would take kindly to an attack that could potentially harm their family and friends. Then there's also an untold number of people in small but crucial roles -from food growers to bureaucrats- who could throw little but important wrenches in the works of the would be invasion.
That being said, the U.S. does, without a doubt, have the military capacity, resources and strategical know-how to run Mexico to the ground several times over even while pulling punches.

first, the USA would be invading its 3rd largest economical partner, severing a lot of its own production lines. second, you would definitely crush our army if it were to face the US army in a frontal assault, but guess what, our army has trained since, ever to fight an asymmetrical war against the USA, because, the USA is the only country that is a threat to us, so every training exercise about a foreign invasion assumes the invasion of a powerful enemy through our northern border. third, it would be vietnam all over again, but worse, mexico is way bigger, have a lot more man power and we could easily go to your own turf and wreck havoc among your cities, poison water, maybe blow up one or two dams or even a nuclear plants.
Edit: also there is the historical evidence, in the past we have been reckless and bold engaging in combat the USA military after its landgrabbing of 1848. Pershing expedition, Carrizal, marina Cruz, Tampico, Veracruz, oil expropriation and supplying of oil to the Nazis, etc. We fought and did a lot of what for other countries would have mean an automatic invasion by the USA but that we have gotten away with barely any negative consequences, and you know what, we know that the USA won't be attacking us, our economies have become so entangled that they would be almost attacking itself, at least economically.

The answer is complicated, a lot of things would happen, that we could not know until the day it happens, but just for the record, I being a mexican, would rather die fighting than letting any country to occupy my country, is in my blood, in my genes, and I am very sure that more than half of the 120 millions of mexicans think and feel the same way, I know that fighting the United States is suicide, but death is the only way when my nation is being invaded! The mexicans would fight for our children and our land, the United States would fight for the interests of a few men of the elite, period.

I answered an identical question not too long ago. Here we go: In broad overview, the military phase will succeed rapidly. That’s a given. Mexico will fall and we will occupy every square inch of it. Then the insurgency will start.
What Mexico has—in addition to its surviving military—in terms of insurgency capabilities are the narcotraficantes. They are very capable of extreme scientifically applied violence. We will be bled dry, and not just inside Mexico. Unlike our losses to the Viet Cong and the Mujaheddin, we will have an enemy right next door. Insurgents will bypass any Great Wall with next to no difficulty due to their long experience with smuggling, and they will conduct terror operations on U.S. turf.
Mexican freedom fighters will hit any soft target they can, from railway stations to power distribution hubs to sporting arenas. Destruction of infrastructure will be first priority—hit us where it costs—followed by targets of mass civilian casualties—hit us where it feels.
Short version, we will win the war and lose the insurgency. Even after Viet Nam, Somalia, Afghanistan, and Iraq, our military is not set up to deal with it at all. Expensive stealth fighters and next-generation main battle tanks are meaningless against a determined, organized, properly planned insurgent network.

I’m throwing a curve ball that’s sure to fire some people up….Mexico has already been attacked and overrun, the United States has not only turned a blind eye politically to this, we directly fund and support the occupying enemy.
The United States ever increasing demand for black market commodities has made a very lucrative business for our neighbors to the south. The political and economic climate for a majority of those nations has created a perfect environment for organized crime.
We helped create the “Cartels” that really control Mexico and most of Central and South America. The amount of wealth they have created from human trafficking, drugs, weapons and much more rivals Mexico and many other nations GDP. That’s just part of the issue, these “Cartels” rule with an iron fist. They took the methods for control from leaders like Stalin or Pol Pot and combined it with the savvy of old Italian mobsters family model. Then bought, exploited and terrorized the Mexican people and used United States politics and laws to their advantage.
The “Cartels” proximity and virtual unfettered access to the U.S has attracted the attention of nation states who desire that access for economic and military gain. The control “Cartels” have over the Mexican government is so obvious by the ineffective actions of law enforcement and failed military operations, then the response from Mexican leadership when deadly altercations happen from said “Cartels”. If you apply logic to this situation “Cartels” are in a position to receive assistance from foreign governments and influence decisions of the Mexican government.
Why is there an argument for border security or immigration laws that allows and encourages people to enter the US any way possible? Why do we give anyone attempting to enter this nation constitutional rights and tax entitlements without a commitment and responsibility to become a citizen? Why do we allow and encourage illegal immigrants to risk their life coming to the US, working in sub-standard conditions, with low-wages and technically no rights as a citizen? Why are taxpaying citizens shamed and ridiculed when they ask these questions or disagree with open borders and stricter policies?
The United States has encouraged “Cartels” to over-throw the Mexican government. Without enforcing border security and immigration we continue to encourage this enemy and others to exploit this weakness and fortify their position. History shows us how most powerful nations has fallen. Weaken them first from the inside, attempt to divide and turn them against each other. So my answer is we allowed Mexico to be attacked and overrun now America is vulnerable to that same style of attack. Just as long as our slaves and drugs continue to get here at the cheapest price.

There really is nothing to gain, if the United States militarily invaded Mexico. The rest of the world would just see it as, the U.S. being an aggressor nation attacking one of its neighbors. Of course the rest of Latin America would condemn the invasion, the United Nations would most likely condemn it, though to be honest most other nations would only verbally condemn the attack, I highly doubt any other nation would try to intervene militarily, to them it just wouldn’t be worth it.
Now with all of that out of the way, here’s what would the American Occupational Forces would be in for: the majority of the populace would be most uncooperative with Occupational Soldiers, even so much as attacking them outright, guerrilla hit and run tactics, IED’s, sabotage, and assassinations of Officers and other key figures, an organized resistance would appear and the carnage that is happening to our soldiers right now in the Middle East, would repeat itself in the Occupied Territories.
There would be some factions that would cooperate with the Occupational Forces such as the Mexican Upper Class, but they would be getting some sort of compensation for doing so, and would be seen as Traitors by the Resistance and targeted for assassination.
As with The Vietnam War, the Occupation of Mexico would take on a toll on the Occupational Troops, from PTSD to maiming and killing, and it would also take its toll on the Home Front, as horror stories from Troops and The Media would begin to show the U.S. what a Meat Grinder we have just gotten ourselves into. The American People, sick and tired of War, would call for a withdrawal from The Occupied Territories, an end to hostilities from a War that should have never have happened.
And, there will be long lasting consequences in the entire Western Hemisphere for the United States: what little trust we had with ALL of Latin America would be gone for good, every nation south of the border, whether that be Texas or The Occupied Territories, would become much more militaristic, it could even lead to the rise of a faction from Latin America that would seek the destruction of the United States once and for all.

That is a really funny question, perfectly absurd, however. They would never do that even when asked by Mexico! Why? It would change the U.S. to an extent that it would be hard to recognize as the country it is today. There are something like 110 million Mexicans, most of them younger than the average U.S. citizen. The many issues present in Mexico would break the possibilities of the U.S. to handle it reasonably. Chaos would be the result.
Just remember German reunification. That cost western Germany a fortune, and they were unifying with their own kind. After 26 years, there are still countless mentality and economic issues. Mexico as a society is waaaay different than the U.S. It could be argued, that mexican society is not even truly "western". It is something different, unique.

I lived for a lengthy period in Mexico, my in-laws are all people with a rural, farming and ranching background. To give you an idea: Mexican families are often organized strikingly resembling matriarchy! My wife uses to say that I am worse of a macho than most Mexicans. Why? Not because of infidelity, but I do not allow her to boss me around inside the house! Final decisions in her family were taken by the grandmother. This sort of setup is very prent in poorer strata of society, actually a majority. This often stems from the fact, that fathers are absent, usually because they were "let go"!
Conclusion. Maybe the U.S. should take over Canada. Less trouble, less people. Maybe in several generations cultures will grow together, or at least learn, to leave each other alone. A great mexican cultural trait: Don't be "metiche"! (nosy, getting into affairs of your neighbors, etc.) I miss that a lot here in Switzerland. Too many unofficial deputies around here.

Theoretically any country could attempt to invade another. The U.S. is extremely unlikely to invade Mexico as both countries have intertwined economies. An invasion would cost far, far more than it could possibly gain, and the United States hasn’t made a land grab in well over a century.
Canada doesn’t have an expeditionary capable military, and even if it did they would have even less to gain from an invasion of Mexico than would the United States.
Another country could certainly attempt an invasion, but the United States would probably intervene, as it is American doctrine to consider any foreign attack on North America as an attack on the United States. As of today, there is currently no military on the planet, or even combined militaries, that could mount a seaborne invasion of Mexico and fight off the U.S. Navy and Air Force.
