I wanted to make this post because it's honestly been eating at me. I'm from the UK but I actually lived in India for a few months on an exchange program when I was a teenager. I had a great host family and I've always loved the country. Recently I decided to learn Russian. I've gotten good enough to understand comments on YouTube and Telegram and the reality is actually scary.

There is this idea that Russia and India are best friends. When they speak English they keep up this polite diplomatic image. But I've been reading their internal discussions for months and the racism is off the charts. It is not just a few bad apples. It is degrading and ugly.

I think now I have gone numb to the amount of racism I have seen from seemingly normal looking people on social media. There would be a guy with his family as his profile picture on facebook spewing the most hateful shit, and it makes me wonder what could be the education these people got and what sort of media they have been consuming? I feel scared to think people like this are raising families.

This is not even limited to any one country. Just go to any Australian facebook page find any post mentioning Indians and you will see hoardes of such people even if the victim is an Indian. This is the same with any number of posts on social media be it instagram or twitter or anyone of them.

Tribalism in humans is a very real scenario. They will never stop demonising other cultures. It doesn't matter East or west, this or the past generation. This has happened forever but now they have a broader outlet.

I have seen local Chinese saying "we should complain about this to our (their version of municipality)" when they see a few Indian tourists in their place. I've seen them saying "if there are so many willing to come here, how about we disappear some of them lol" (I forgot the exact word to word comment but it broke my heart). And many many more vile rumours like Indians eat while shitting and just what not. Some people keep on commenting about the rich spices but they don't know the very rich aroma and taste we're proud of is what they clown. They hit the core man.

Man, I relate to you, apparently the current worst species of the world is us, we do not deserve this, but let's just take it as a sign from God (or the play of life, whatever you believe in) , that when we're moving forward to progress, tests and trials do come our way. Apparently, that's how I've been coping these days.

I really don't understand the russian dickriding happening, for its all government to government dealings and diplomacy. I speak russian myself, and while yes there is still overall positive image of indians abroad, russians are as racist as the usual west. We had a good relationship with the USSR, and that's gone with its dissolution. Most Indians don't get this to their mind. You can see a sharp difference between Soviet citizens and the current gen russians of their perception of India.

Soviet citizens were absolutely different era people. USSR had actually had people studying Indian history and language. One of my distant relative worked as a professor at Moscow university. Trust me, 1970s Moscow was way more friendly towards Indian than western countries at the same time period.

In general, I’m not surprised to see topics like this on Reddit. I can’t say for sure, but I also wouldn’t be surprised if it’s some bot trying to stir up hostility.

Almost every larger university in the west offers Hindi classes. That is nothing special tbh and just part of a good language department. Just for comparison, I studied in Germany in a medium sized university and for Indian languages they offered Hindi, Sanskrit, Urdu, Tamil and Kannada. Multiple German universities have proper departments for South Asian Studies. If you look at research done on contemporary India in European universities, it will mostly be associated with places like SOAS, Oxford, Göttingen/Max planck Institutes, Humboldt and Science Po Paris

There absolutely is rising racism against Indians in the West but you’ll find many more people that have no problems or like Indian people in the West than you will in Russia. Western countries don’t have a widespread phenomenon like Great Russian Chauvinism which is basically the mainstream view.

Why is this surprising though? It's not like Russians are the most enlightened or progressive people on earth. They are already not a fan of people from the stans who are their neighbors, why would they be fans of Indians? Regardless, the leadership of both countries are allies and that's what counts. At the end of the day, the Chinese are more of a threat to Russia than the Indians.

Indian students flock to Russia for doing their MBBS. If OP's point is true and Russians discuss hate against Indians openly while Indians praise Russians, that spells disaster for the average Indian guy in Russian territory.

Racism against Indians is normalized (and honestly aided and abetted by a certain section of Indians by their misguided assumption that they will somehow be spared of the effect of that racism). The thing you can say openly about India and Indians anywhere in the world would get you cancelled if you said the same thing about any other people of color. Russia, Israel, America, EU, Australia - there is no place where the hate for Indians is absent. Check how Ukranian Officials talked about Indians, yet students have been going there forever. In EU that represents itself as moral beacon for the West, try traveling through less touristy places and see how you get treated. Hating on Indians is cool and you are vulnerable everywhere.

I can't think of any country that is not racist to other ethnicities so this is hardly surprising but yeah Asian countries do tend to top those charts these days, Russia included. I agree that Indians shouldn't be wanking off Russia, especially when they don't even know anything about them other than "they give oil to us".
