The United States, of course.

The American soldier may not be among the very best in the world, but taking all factors into account, the U.S. military is by far the deadliest fighting force on the planet.
The U.S. Air Force alone can turn a small country into a moonscape.

And let’s not even start talking about all those fancy (and super expensive) missiles, cruise missiles, and artillery rockets in their arsenal. Before U.S. infantry even enters the battle zone, most adversaries will have already surrendered (if they’re smart).

Russians and North Koreans are more ruthless, so I definitely wouldn’t want to be taken prisoner by them. In this regard, the Americans treat their prisoners of war fairly well.
The only problem is that once the battle is over, there probably won’t be many people left alive on your side to take prisoner.
So, fighting against the United States? No, thank you!

Not a veteran, but reservist NCO.
I am going to go another direction than the other answers:
I would absolutely not want to face any of the other Nordic nations in combat. Not Finland, not Norway, not Denmark. Or for that matter any of the Baltic nations.

The reason for that is that I really do not want to go into war with our nice (but slightly odd) neighbours. And if we end up in combat with each other, something higher up in command or the political sphere must have really, really went downhill. Our countries have too good of a relation to think that there would be any acceptable reasons to go to war.

If we were ordered into combat against any of those, I hope that soldiers on both sides rise the white flags of parley and then have a coffee and cinnamon bun until we can figure out what is going on.
And if we have to shoot at each other, I might not be very inclined to aim that well.

Not a veteran, but a reservist, and my answer is any Islamic.

They are goddamn fanatical, they never give up, they do not fear death (actually them death is merely a quick access to Paradise), they follow absolutely no rules and no human rights and other similar Western balderdash, and they are experts on waging the guerrilla war.

Warfare is essentially human will versus human will struggle, and no matter how many times the US military might did beat the Taliban army on the field, they merely fled, recovered, and came back. The US military may have all the clocks, but Taliban had all the time. In the end the will of the Islamic fanatics proves always stronger than any secular military, no matter how well armed it might be or how well trained it might be.

The only way to win against an Islamic army is to wage a war of extermination, or to have a religion which is as fanatical as Islam itself.
The weakness of all Islamic armies is that they are very much tribal, and very much prone to corruption. It is said it is impossible to buy an Islamic army, but it is easy to rent one - especially against a tribal enemy.

It is not a matter of wanting or not wanting to face a nation in combat.
It is a matter of willing or not willing.

Which nation would I not want to face?
All of them.

Russia or communist China. If either of those two engaged in combat with the United States, the inevitable result would be global thermonuclear war. It wouldn't mean the end of the human race, but it would be the destruction of human civilization. Most people on the planet would die, and the few hundred million human survivors would be in scattered bands across the present “Third World.” Most of the Northern Hemisphere would be depopulated, including where I live. I'm not sure I would welcome that.

I am a Cold War veteran. When I was in the Marines no country was stupid enough to try anything against the United States. Nowadays any asshat thinks they can take on MAGAs chickenshit “’murica”.
