Some thoughts:
Our families are not important to us
Just because we see independence rather than co-dependence as a positive thing in the West, doesn't mean we don't spend time with and love our families. I showed an Indian family pictures of my grandfather's birthday where 15 of us got together in their living room for a small celebration. They were very surprised that we spent any time together at all.
We only eat a particular type of food
One of the more common questions I was asked was "..and what do you eat over there?" Urrmmm... Well, everything, I guess.
Some people found it hard to comprehend that we might eat out at different styles of restaurants a couple of times a week, and that the food would vary so much. If you ask the average Indian this question, it is likely they will be able to answer it very quickly and the answer will include dal and roti.
We are very promiscuous
I was asked by some unmarried Indian twenty-something males what my "score" was. Once they'd explained, and I'd got to know them a bit better, I thought it might be an interesting sociological experiment to tell them and see their reaction. At first they were shocked to find that my number was higher than theirs combined (which was one) but mentioned that they had heard that marriage doesn't matter when it comes to sex outside of India because everyone is sleeping with everyone. Just look at the movies!
We are very formal (Brits only)
I found the opposite to be true, i.e. that Indians are more formal than Brits, but most Indians seemed to think that we are very formal. I found Indian traditions, such as touching an older relative on the knee or feet, to be extremely formal in comparison with British politeness.
We are as fanatical about our favourite sport as Indians are about cricket
No one is as fanatical as the average Indian is about any other sport. Period.
I might know your cousin in Southall or Birmingham
Sorry, no.

There are lots of misconceptions Indians have about people from foreign countries. Some of the most funny ones which I believe have been cultivated inside our minds( yes! I'm an Indian myself) for ages due to ignorance are
Foreigners are very rich
The grass on the other side is always greener. Indians think foreigners are very rich and the ones who manage to visit India are definitely rich since they can afford taking a plane and have a vacation. The thought is mostly prent among the less educated class and is one of the reasons most of the lower class labors tries to cheat foreigners coming to India and misguide them. Though, it isn't true. Many foreigners travel to India on a shoe string budget and are mostly from middle class families.
Foreigners are white and those who aren't aren't rich
This one is funny. It is believed here that only white people are rich. It again adds to our ignorance. The misconception has been carried through words since the times of the days of slavery. Black foreigners are not that rich, they just cannot be because they are black and most black people are from Africa. ( 12.6% of America's population are African Americans). We don't bother to ask you if you are American or from Africa if you are black because you are supposed to be from Africa no matter what you do. Being black also has an advantage here that you are going to be less vulnerable to frauds compared to your White counterparts.
There is no poverty elsewhere in the world
We believe we are the only country to have a poor population. The truth is we are not. Poverty exists even in the developed countries.
We respect our families and they don't
Indians touch the feet of their elders to show respect. Our society is build on family centric values and we live with our parents even after we turn 20+. We Indians believe we are the only country to be concerned about our families and foreigners don't. Though it's partially true but it doesn't mean foreigners don't have family values. It's just that they have a different kind of society where being independent and moving out is believed to be more respectful which is very contradictory to what Indians believe especially the elderly ones.
Sex is what matters
Indians think that foreigners don't really have emotional bonding with their partners and all that matters to them is sex. We shy away from talking sex but this has done no good to our country. Sex related crimes here out number any other criminal activity.
Foreigners don't believe in the institution of marriage and this makes foreign women sluts. They sleep with whoever they feel like. Indians think marriage is above anything and everything and once a woman gets married she is bound to life time of suppression and adjustment even if she wants to break out. It is considered an social outrage and there is whole lot of unnecessary hype around divorce in India.
The truth is, over the years the idea of marriage has become more sensible. People around the world get married only when they are sure of their life partner. Dating isn't a disgrace and it's okay to kiss thousand frogs to find that one prince charming where as in India you have to marry that one frog and stay with him for a life time.
These are some of the grass root facts about Indians and their conception towards foreigners. There are too many. Most of them are silly and stupid based on no sensible facts.
P.S - No country is perfect. We agree that we are light years away from being even close to good. But we are growing, learning and evolving rapidly. Things are changing in India. Beyond all the imperfections there is a beautiful side to us which you should try and explore yourself.

Indians think that only they have the best culture and tradition among all countries while this is not true as stated in 'Swades'. Every country has its own culture and values and they should not be undermined. For e.g. In Germany, If any driver sees you walking towards the road, doesn't matter light is red or green, he/ she will make way for you first. That is the thing I haven't seen in India even once.
P.S. : Never try to do this when it is red. Guy driving might be drunk.
