Will I face discrimination in rural China if I pass through as a tourist? I'm an American, as well as of half-Indian descent. I've heard of the China/India border clashes but I'm unsure if there's any racial animosity as a result of it.

Nope.
No one cares about the border clashes. They happened in this extremely remote, inhospitable area where nobody lives, and nobody goes except for the soldiers themselves. (The place is very mountainous; very cold; very high altitude; very undeveloped; and just naturally very dangerous).
Probably 99.999% of the 1.4 billion people in China cannot remember the name of that place, if they ever knew it at all.
(The place is called Galwan Valley, in case you’re interested).
Another fun fact for you - the total number of casualties in the Galwan Valley clash was less than one Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting in the USA.

You did specify rural China. My experience with people in rural areas in countries where I have travelled has been the opposite. They are more helpful, polite, and considerate.
As other answers have said, be polite and considerate, and you are unlikely to go wrong.
Your question brought to mind an incident at Shanghai Pudong airport last week when I visited China.
An American tourist, I could tell from his accent and his passport, was having difficulty at the immigration counter. He looked like a first-time visitor and was having trouble with his immigration form, and left parts unfilled.
The immigration officer, who spoke some English, was patient and helpful. And while it held up the queue a little, the visitor was soon on his way.
Many years ago, I witnessed a similar situation at the Los Angeles International Airport. A trio of elderly Chinese in front of me were having problems at Border Control (US border agents are armed by the way; why?). The agent was angry, impatient, and rude. Why? Because the Chinese visitors did not speak English. She did not talk to them; she shouted at them. She finished by telling them to step aside while she dealt with an easier arrival.
After I had been processed, I turned around and the three Chinese travellers were still standing there in a huddle, waiting.
This was not an isolated incident. The only places where I have encountered “nice” US border control agents were Honolulu and Boston. New York’s Border Control agents are as rude and their TSA employees are worse.
In China, most signs are in Chinese and English. Public announcements in the metro, trains, at airports and train stations are often in English. It is similar in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea.

China is quite safe, and the common people are not as irrational as those in India.
In generalization, IMHO, there is more hatred by Indians against Chinese than the other way around. Remember, China and India have peacefully co-existed for centuries, before the rabble-rousting, shit-stirring Brits came around. The border clashes are a result of the British border maps.

Indian leaders are elected through western style “democracy”, hence the usefulness of a boogeyman.
China, Pakistan serves as suitable boogeyman at opportune time.

No. But rural China is not set up to welcome foreigners yet. Plan your trip, especially accomodations.
Just follow the same lonely planet rules of travel and personal security. China is generally safe but depending on where you go, there can be significant difference in attitudes, especially towards different genders.
Respect everyone and don't be flashy.

As long as you are polite and don't break the law, you will receive the same polite response.
Think about it: the Sino-Indian conflict is far less serious than the Sino-Japanese War; polite Japanese people received the same polite treatment.
Don't bring the ideas of India's caste system to China.
Not long ago, two Indian Brahmins went to a Chinese bar and demanded that the Chinese waitstaff treat them the way people of lower castes treat Brahmins—specifically, holding the wine above their heads before serving it to them. As a result, they were kicked out of the bar.

in Malaysia we have a few Indian customer meet 1–2 very good people one, the rest 50 people are very demanding & cheat our things after buy & demand refund most of it, its really a headaches.
we’re trying & keep trusting they’re not all of that bad but most of it makes them destroyed their good name, we stop trying & doesn’t want selling anything specially to them, along with Filipino customer specially that foreign spouses one.
Some human race doesn’t teach their kids well & become too late to realising when adult coming.
We’re not hating them thou, still buying & eat indian food once a while, its just this idea selling or do businesses with them i think is a NO

In China's international trade:
For German customers, production can begin with a 30% deposit;
for American customers, production can begin with a 50% deposit;
for Indian customers, production can begin only after 100% payment is received.

why so far different like that? For indian
Seriously why

In trade with India, there have been numerous cases like this:
Indian customer A places an order with you for a custom-made product, costing $8, with a selling price of $10 per unit, for a total of 10,000 units.
After receiving 30% of the payment, you begin production. Once production is complete, A cancels the order. Because it's a custom-made product, you can't sell it to anyone else. You're left staring at the inventory in your warehouse.
Three months later, Indian customer B appears, saying he needs the product but demands a unit price of $3. You have no choice but to sell it to him at that price to minimize your losses.
In reality, A and B are partners. Ultimately, they acquire the product for $6, while you lose $2.

You are right. Generally I will ask for confirmed ILC. So even if they cheat, they are no able to cancel the order as long as you ship within the timefrx and negotiate the ILC with the local banker. Note I usually ask my banker to confirm the ILC although it costs money too - however I will normally add the cost of confirmation into my selling price.

Unlike the average Indian, the average Chinese knows very little of India and Indians. How you are treated depends very much on yourself. Nobody cares whether you are a Brahmin or a Dalit.
I am from Singapore where we have many different races. Recent Indian immigrants have created resentment not only from non Indians but even more so from people of Indian origin. I understand that this is because of arrogance and castist attitude from the new immigrants towards the local Indians who are mostly of lower caste and economic backgrounds.

No, you will be stared at as an oddity - there are relatively few non-Chinese in China and more or less none in rural areas. (I lived in China with my family for 8 years 2012–2020)

I hope it didn't make you uncomfortable!
Being Chinese I will never have your experience in China!
Closest I can approximate are the staring squads in Vietnam decades ago.
The children will just stare at you, as they have never seen a plus size person, as Vietnamese in general are built much smaller.
They just stand there and stare .
The friendliest are malay children in southern part of rural Malaysia, they will wave at you as you cycles past them.
