You ask if NATO and Europe have forgotten what happened in WW2? No, they haven’t. Russia did not sacrifice millions of soldiers "for a free, prosperous Europe." At the time, the Soviet unx—together with Nazi Germany—signed the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact to divide and conquer Europe. They jointly invaded and occupied Poland, even holding a joint victory parade with the Nazis.

NATO countries have not forgotten the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact and that in September 1939 the Soviets invaded Poland to support their military allies the Nazis and to divide up Poland with their military allies.
