Visualizing the Countries With the Most Millionaires in 2025
If the world’s millionaire population were 10 people, four would live in America, one in China, and the rest around the world.
Altogether, this group holds $226 trillion in wealth across 60 million individuals. While wealth has grown meaningfully in emerging markets supported by strong economic growth, America continues to maintain its grip on global wealth.
This graphic shows the countries with the most millionaires in 2025, based on data from the UBS Global Wealth Report 2025.
In 2025, approximately one in 10 American adults are millionaires, reaching an estimated 23.8 million in total.
Overall, New York City, Los Angeles, and the San Francisco Bay area stand as the nation’s wealthiest cities, followed by Chicago and Houston. Interestingly, a separate analysis finds that Scottsdale, Arizona has seen the fastest millionaire growth in the country over the past decade.
With 6.1 million adults in this echelon, China follows in second. Since 2014, millionaire growth has ballooned 124% in Shenzhen, where major tech players like Tencent and Huawei are headquartered.
France follows in third, with about half the number of millionaires as in China. It also is home to the highest number of billionaires in Europe, including one of the world’s richest people, Bernard Arnault.
Meanwhile, Switzerland and Luxembourg have the highest concentration of millionaires, each with one per seven adults. Hong Kong SAR, Australia, and the Netherlands also have a high density of millionaires, where the ratio sits at one in 10 adults.

I feel like people don’t appreciate just how wealthy wealthy Americans are.
Having a few million USD goes a really long way when the USD has been persistently above the PPP equilibrium level with most other countries.

fascism: A system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, a capitalist economy subject to stringent governmental controls, violent suppression of the opposition, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism.
Let's see, there's still 3 axis of government in the US, of which Trump only leads one.
Which means he obviously is not a dictator. See the first point.
Yes, we're in a capitalist economy, so I'll give you that one.
violent suppression of law breakers. I can see how you might twist that one.
Belligerent nationalism. Yes and no. He also has been extremely active in working with other countries to strike deals, and end wars.
Racism... Trump is far less racist than most people I see yelling "racism!"

Just to clarify. Every country, even ones like Sweden, which we laud for their social programs, have poverty. For example, poverty is at 16% in Sweden.
12% on food stamps in the US isn't bad.

I grew up in rural west Texas and, though we had the rare Texas oil billionaires, I didn’t really understand ‘wealth’ until I lived for some time in NYC. The amount of casual wealth around in NYC is pretty intense. I don’t think most of the people I grew up with would quite get it.

Tbf, when the median income is $40,000/year and the average income is $63,000/year, it seems a little bit off. I mean, it doesn’t sound like much, the average is only 56% over the median, but half of people have less than $40,000 a year.
The average wealth is $1.06 million, with the median being under $200,000. The average is 600% over the median. Which is pretty insane, but not as incredible as the wealth inequality.
The top 10% of Americans hold over 2/3rds of all wealth, with the bottom 50% holding 2.5% of wealth.
And the top 1% owns 30% of all wealth in the US.
Over 11% of Americans meanwhile are under the poverty line, which is $15,650 for one adult or $32,150 for a family of 4 in the contiguous US.
So while America as a nation is wealthy, with extremely wealthy individuals and the best paid upper class, middle class and lower class, it also has a high poverty rate.
It’s also worth mentioning that if going by OECD data, the US poverty rate is more like 18%. For comparison, Canada has 12%, Sweden 8%, Finland and the Netherlands are 7%.
South Korea, Turkey, Japan, Spain, Latvia and Estonia have a lower poverty rate than the US. In fact most of the currently considered “Western countries” have a lower poverty rate than the US. Except for Israel.
TL;DR: a large portion of Americans have very little wealth with over 2/3rd of the wealth being concentrated at the top 10% and 30% of the wealth being concentrated into the hands of the top 1%.
Jomax101
Absolutely agree - HOWEVER - this is very skewed due to populations obviously
The U.S. has 23.8million millionaires out of 340million people, Australia has 1.9million out of 28million
That is 7% of the population for both countries
All of my siblings are millionaires in their 30s on paper (in aus) because they’ve owned homes for a number of years at this point, I guarantee they don’t live the lives most people expect from 30 yr old “millionaires” because 95% of their net worth is tied up in house equity, they certainly aren’t struggling day to day, but they also all drive regular cars, maybe go on holiday once a year, don’t have summer homes or beach houses as you might expect when you hear “millionaire”
The truth is being a millionaire isn’t what it used to be when the average house is nearly a million dollars
I wonder what countries actually live the best life on an average income because I just don’t think it’s possible for it to be a country where 40-60% of ur net take home pay goes to rent or a mortgage
$5-10million+ is the new “millionaire” in my opinion

It's probably more useful for populist politicians (from both the right and the left) to keep leveraging dissatisfaction.
That's why the left had "occupy wall street", that's why the right had "biden's egg prices".
The only way to push for fringe extremist policies is to make people feel miserable and preventing them from noticing how great their lives actually are.
If you live a happy, wealthy and healthy life, you don't cry about migrants steeling jobs, or CEOs earning too much.

I really did come here with that exact thought.
Rich people in Europe own yachts and go to car races.
Rich people in America own Europe.
Even on the poor end. Half of the world lives on less than a dollar a day. America doesn't even have homeless people that poor.

In the UK, 1 in 4 pensioners are millionaires and there’s 13 million pensioners. So that’s 3.25M before counting the under 65s.
Maybe the graph is cash based/non main home assets millionaire as it’s several million people short for the UK.
And that’s millionaire in pounds, not USD, so the graph is even more wrong.
Edit: A quick google says 2.8 million households have assets over $1.5m in the UK, and a household is on average 2.4 people.

Wealth inequality doesn’t really apply for this stat.
The average American millionaire is in their 60s. Almost anyone can have a net worth over $1 million by that age by just having a 401k or other retirement account and contributing modestly if you start in your early 20s.
From this source: Americans in their 60s have an average retirement savings of $1.2 million. (That’s just retirement savings, that ignores other investments or home ownership or other factors).
If you’re talking broadly about millionaires in America, most of the people you’re talking about are just normal people who have been saving for retirement for their whole lives.
如果你从二十岁出头就开始工作,并定期向401k(译者注:401K计划是美国《国内税收法》第401条k项规定的企业补充养老保险制度,由雇员和雇主共同缴费建立个人账户,适用于私营盈利性公司)或其他退休账户存入适量资金,那么到这个年纪时,净资产超过100万美元对几乎任何人来说都是可以实现的。
ExotiquePlayboy
Maybe a million is a lot in other countries. But in Canada, in Toronto, where any shit box house is $1 million, if you have a house as an asset you’re basically a millionaire. But in reality you’re poor. Meanwhile if you’re worth a million in Texas where a house is $300k, that person has money.
innsertnamehere
It would be 1 million USD - so you would need to own a home $1.4m CAD or above. There are a lot fewer houses in that price range, even in Toronto. Probably less than half of houses would go for that.
Also - far less people own a home in central Toronto than you think. There are 800,000 detached dwellings in Toronto, and a LOT of them are actually worth less than $1.4 million, and even fewer owned outright without a mortgage.
Many of these charts also exclude primary residence from the calculation.
Lets say that even half of the detached homes in Toronto are owned outright and worth more than $1.4 million - that's 400,000 people.
Ultimately most people in Canada live outside of Toronto in lower cost areas.
It's no different than talking about the US and saying that every home owner in the Bay Area is a millionaire.

It's kinda nuts that countries like France, UK or Germany have almost half of China's millionaires, while being around 20 times smaller.
While people ofte talk about how much millionaire's China has and how that shows they aren't left-wing, the amount per capita is actually low.
Boring_Doubt9754
It gets even funnier with countries like Switserland and the Nethetlands.

it fucking kills me we don't have more charts that break the US down by state when making comparisons like this.

Why does it matter?

A chain retail manager from outside NYC accepted a Cleveland transfer, only if they kept his salary. He has a better quality of life (and larger house vs NY apartment) living off one paycheck a month.
If you haven't lived in different regions, you don't get how wildly different the costs of daily expenses are in different parts of the US.

They wanna see CA pounding KY’s balls in stats like these, then compare with states voting red vs blue.

Its basically like doing an average wealth with Poland, Portugal, Romania and Luxembourg then assuming they are all wealthy. Meanwhile it's Luxembourg fucking over the average.
Eravier
I know what you mean but Luxembourg wouldn’t change that average. It’s too small.

And states can be divided further. What's your point? It makes more sense to compare the USA to all of Europe than it does to any individual countries in Europe which are roughly the size of our states.
wannabe-physicist
You could say this for legitimately any country. Move away from Paris and London and see what happens to the numbers for France and the UK.

This is why housing is so expensive. People are parking their wealth in America. Tod for Americans already owning assets, not good for kids starting out

How many of those millionaires are professional sport athletes?
And for Canada, how many of those are just home owners?

The NFL is by far the biggest league in terms of active players and even then 53 active players and 32 teams means at most 1696 players that’s a rounding error for 23.8 million people.

1 in 9 Swiss citizens are millionaires. I’m pretty sure that’s #1 per capita on this infographic.

What is a millionaire ? Anyone with 1M$ in cash ? And stocks ? Do propeties count too ?

As a Finn I always laugh at this list.
Other Nordics have 300-500 thousand millionaires.
Finland has like two people with a million euros.

If there are 340m people in the usa, at 23.8m there are much more than 1 in 15 (6%) millionaires. Is this saying there are 23.8m households with a net worth of $1m or more? Not individuals?

The justification for lowered tax rates for the rich ,"Trickle Down Economics" is that the investors at the top are "Job Creators". Currently the rise in the Stock Markets is driven almost exclusively by investments in AI, a technology that will eventually drastically reduce jobs. Remind me again why we're extending tax breaks for the rich.

This is not a good thing. Having a ton of millionaires while at the same time having unsafe schools, starving kids, homeless veterans, people going bankrupt over medical expenses means that your backwards ass society has collapsed.

I'm curious what their definition of millionaire is. According to the Dutch statistics bureau, there are 452k 'millionaire households' (2024) in the Netherlands. Would that translate as 1.3M millionaires in the infographic? Or do they take into account the broader welfare and future pension claims?

My takeaway would be that everywhere I’d want to live has a healthy amount of rich people. Almost like ‘eating the rich’ is an abominable policy that improves no one’s lives.

Considering how lightly populated Canada and Australia are, they are doing pretty good on millionaire count. Especially considering how many of those other countries have much larger populations.
