The number of reports by nurses of racist incidents at work has risen by 55% over three years, according to analysis by the nursing unx.
The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) expects to receive more than 1,000 calls this year from nurses seeking advice and support after racist incidents in the workplace, compared with almost 700 cases in 2022.
Examples of racist abuse reported to its helpline include a nurse whose annual leave was denied being told by their manager that they should not have come to the UK, and another RCN member being told by a colleague: “I want to remind you that you’re not one of us.”
Other racist incidents reported to the unx include a patient and their family repeatedly refusing care from a nurse because they said they didn’t want “people like her” treating them and referring to the nurse as a “slave”. Another member was subjected to racist remarks including being told that you could only see black people’s teeth “when it’s dark”.
Prof Nicola Ranger, the RCN general secretary and chief executive, said it was a “mark of shame” that racist incidents were rising across health and care services.

The nursing unx has urged the government to stop using anti-migrant rhetoric, which it said was putting staff at risk.
Ranger said: “The reality is that our health and social care system only functions because nursing staff of every ethnicity, nationality and faith make it so. The RCN also called on employers to prioritise tackling racism and to work with trade unxs to establish stronger mechanisms to protect staff.
A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Social Care said: “These stark figures are shocking and our thoughts are with the victims of this vile abuse.

And there are politicians who want to normalise racism.

The United Kingdom is becoming quickly inhospitable to a variety of minority groups. The end goal of this hostility is they’ll leave. Of course, to people like Reform and their voters, this is part and parcel for their ideology, this racism is the method they use to obtain a “pure” Britain.
But when these minorities are gone, we won’t have anyone to replace them in their fields or the lives of their friends.

It's a shame they try this tactic, because I can't even go anywhere if I wanted to. Lived here since I was 9 months old and im 17 now, I have about enough arabic to talk to my family and thats it, couldn't make a life back in Iraq if I wanted to.

Anyone who racially abuses healthcare professionals - or indeed abuses anyone on ward in any way - should automatically go right to the back of the care queue. And be made to wait until there is anyone on duty willing to help them.

Reading some stories, that does happen to a degree - if you piss off the triage nurse or nurse in charge don't be surprised if (as long as medically stable) you end up 'forgotten about' if everyone else is arguably just as unwell as you and they are spending their energy prioritising the patients who are being patient and kind.
I'm not sure it's supposed to happen but these systems have ways for people to exert that influence so it pays dividends for you to be courteous and polite to whomever you're relying on to help you.
I would say the only thing to balance is if someone is ill, sick, or suffering, them lashing out and being frustrated shouldn't be penalised harshly as it's not a fun place to be. There have to be boundaries of course and racist abuse is far past those, but if someone starts effing and blinding because they've been waiting in A&E for 12 hours I think staff/leaders should understand the root cause there is the frustration with the wait and heavily penalising patients is not moving things in the right direction.

Effing and jeffing from frustration is understandable. Though frontline staff who have to face this often can't do much to change the poor infrastructural conditions leading to said frustration.
But racist, sexist, homophobic, generally hateful effing and jeffing that targets specific individuals is not ever acceptable, and should come with consequences.

I think that you would be surprised what most nurses will tolerate in terms of abuse tbh. We know people who are in pain will not be themselves, and we know that someone who is mentally ill might have in ways that would mortify them when well.
I don't think racial abuse is the same. Being in pain or frustration doesn't make anyone shout racial slurs, and there is a consequence to this.
Nurses use discretionary time and resources (staying late, missing breaks, going the extra mile to chase something etc). Will I keep doing my job to provide safe care to someone who has just called my colleague a slur? Yep. Am I going to do anything beyond than what's acceptable, expected and safe? Absolutely not.

So this is how far down the road to outright racism and xenophobia in the media and certain political ideology has taken many people. Some actually now feel that is acceptable to racially insult and slur the very people that are trying to made them better, fix broken bones and stitch them up.
There needs to be legislation that if such things happen, the doctor or nurse administering treatment can just walk away from that person - even if they will bleed out or die from a heart attack. It goes against the hippocratic oath that they have pledged to when becoming doctors. Nursing staff shouldn't have to put up with such racism in the workplace.

I feel like it'd be much much better if they just get prosecuted after treatment. They became doctors to help and they're such good souls that 9 times out of 10 they don't have it in themselves to turn away a critical condition patient, racist or not.

It’s only going to get worse before it gets better I’m afraid. And not just in the UK. Once again the far right rises. This happens as a consequence of austerity, poor economies, and displaced migration. It’s easier to blame a group of people rather than look at themselves. I look around at Britain and it’s crumbling. Services are breaking, mistakes are happening. There is more cheer in a graveyard than a town centre. Immigration is a factor sure, but so is the amount of people who are healthy and of working age wanting benefits, huge amounts going on strike wanting more pay. We are SKINT as a country and underground tube workers want a pay increase. They earn more than some professionals in the country lol. It’s so pathetic. They have 3 buttons. Forward, brake, and mind the gap.

My mom works in a care home and everyday she's called slurs, was punched by an old man in the nose once and came home with blood all over her shirt, I hate seeing it but she loves her job. I feel so bad for her having to deal with these people.
She bathes them, feeds them, gives them medication, wipes their backside, all whilst being racist to her. It's disgusting. She was so happy when she achieved her qualifications that allowed her to work this job but I know deep down it affects her.

I ended up in hospital last month for a few days, on the first night there was a few older people on my ward who said a few horrible things however they had no idea where they were or what was wrong with them. The nursing staff were so patient and good with them.
The second night I was on a different ward and there were people who were fully aware of where they were saying even worse things to the nurses including racial abuse. Just because they weren’t getting all the attention at once or treating it like a hotel with first class service.
One Nurse was being given a lot of abuse from one guy in the middle of the night and she came to my bed to check something and I was amazed at how well she was able to present herself just seconds after hearing that stuff.

Racist abuse, and in fact any abuse, of healthcare workers (or any other worker, for example retail) is utterly unacceptable and needs zero tolerance and to be legally prosecuted. I have also witnessed patients swear at and threaten medical staff and it appeared that nothing was done, which is unacceptable.
However, I would have one concern regarding this.
I once had a medical situation while in hospital. Unfortunately, the two staff on hand, who were both from different minority backgrounds, were unable to speak or understand English well enough to understand what I needed to tell them.
I had to cope with the fear of being unable to communicate to get medical help or understanding.
I stayed calm and polite, but I could imagine someone in a medical emergency being extremely frightened if staff could not understand them. I would not want someone who, during a medical emergency, ended up saying 'I need to speak to someone who speaks English properly!' to be punished for this.

Totally nothing to do with Reform/Brexit/Ukip campaigning on barely disguised racism and rabid nationalism for the last 20+ years. Farage and his ilk have made it ok to be publicly racist again

And more to the point, that is all they have to offer. They're demonstrably incompetent, incapable of any kind of organisation and led by a lazy conman. All that they have to offer is making Britain worse in every way except making it normal to be racist. And that's enough for a lot of British people. All that they want out of life is to be racist. Nothing else matters. Pretty disgusting.
