Yes you can do that. But there's only so many times you can read the same books. Besides if you hide in your cell all the time people will think you're hiding something (most likely the rumor will be that you're a undercover chimo or cop). This is a dangerous situation that potentially could get you killed. Best way to avoid that get a job, play cards at a non gambling table (make sure it's the right one for your crew or race). Go to religious services try all that prison politics allow you to. Some are restricted by inmate rules to a particular ethnicity. You would need an invite from the key holder for that ethnicity to attend if you don't look like them and permission from your own key holder. Mandatory workouts with your crew if you know something ask if you can show the rest of your crew. Also most require yard attendance in case of riot.

In Florida you have to have a job assignment (For which you do not get paid anything at all). Even if it's just a houseman, and your specific job only takes you 15 minutes. After that, you can do whatever. I was an avid reader. I estimate that I read over 2500 books during my 27 year stretch. You can check out up to 3 books per week from the general library, but you can also have books sent to you. I did that a bunch of times. Especially when I was trying to read a whole series.

I read 1–3 books a week and I read everything I could get my hands on, fiction, non-fiction, historical fiction, biographies, series, humor, fantasy… You see, at a young age I was taught the incredible pleasure of immersing yourself in a good book. My body might have been imprisoned but my mind was thousands of miles away. I made it out of prison pretty much unscathed and, actually a better person than when I went in and the power of reading was my best friend throughout. I figure I read close to 400 books in that period of time.

Not “all” day but prisoners have an amazing amount of freedoms in prison. The prisons in which I have worked had the convicts locked in their cells from 2100 to 0600 in which they could do what they wished, within reason. From 0600 2100, they were largely “free” inside the prison to do as they wished. Watch TV, read, eat, exercise, play cards and games with their peers, go to the Law Library, listen to music, have a job and even sit in their open cell if they wished, allowing plenty of time to read.

While I was in the county jail I averaged a book a day for 5 years, 8 months, 21 days. Once I got to prison I averaged 2 to 3 books per week for the next 13 years. I am not counting all of the law books I read while fighting my wrongful conviction. I read every single case from 53 S.Ct. Reporter to 111 S.Ct. Plus more Federal Reporter and State cases than I can recall.

For Texas some of the limitations on reading are due to having an assigned (non-paying) job which can take up a lot of time. If you are a bookworm and stay in your cell all day you will get a jacket (reputation) of being afraid and are more likely to become a victim of extortion or worse. I was in the craft shop (a privilege I earned) and that took up most of my free time so I only read a few hours each night). Also, it can be hard to get books to read. There are restrictions on having books mailed in, there are restrictions on how what books you can have (serious censorship), and the library didn’t have much of a sextion for the 2 books at a time you could check out.

It would depend on the prison. Some require them to bathe, do work, leave the cells for meals, attend classes or counseling and spend a certain amount of time outside of the cells. If the prison provides am ample amount of reading materials, they can spend a lot of time reading.

In Texas your given access to the library and only 2 books per visit in solitary 2 books when every they allow the library access to solitary. In solitary you can get legal law books from the library every week. It's not the same but if you only get case law and appeals you can read nearly everything like watching crime t.v.. You read all the statements and facts presented even some that was withheld from the public. It kills the time.

In British prisons you could. There was usually a large well stocked library that each wing had a timetable to visit. It was ran by volunteers from the local council's library and you could order books from them. Even in segregation you had access to library books but couldn't visit the actual library, they had a little book shelf in a corner and you could grab a few after exercise or whatever. Reading was the only way I could have coped with my last sentence.
