Roland Bartetzko former German Army Paratrooper, Croatian Defense Council, Kosovo Liberation Army Upvoted by Allen Bruce, 4 yrs Active Army Military Police, 4 yrs Army NG Infantry & Cav Scout 6y
The first step is to join your country’s military and serve a few years, most preferably in an infantry or a Special Operations Forces unit. You need a solid military background.
Second, go and fight in a war. You don’t need to spend years on the battlefield, but some combat experience is a must for future mercenaries. Just being deployed with your home country’s military to places like Iraq and Afghanistan is not enough for a real ‘merc’.
Third: A mercenary needs to have a lot of private initiative and also some business sense as he is practically his own free military enterprise.
Last point and very important: Connections, connections, connections! You need to know the guys who are in contact with potential employers so that in case someone is looking for a military specialist, your name pops up: “I know this guy from Sierra Leone/Yemen/ Ukraine, etc. who might be just the right guy for this job, let’s give him a call!”
Mercenaries are extremely good at networking. They offer a very rare and exquisite skillset and to get the right guy for the right job is often very difficult, especially because it’s a field of work where you can’t openly advertise job opportunities.
There are maybe a couple of hundred “real” mercenaries in the world who have these qualifications. Unlike what many people may think, being a soldier for hire has become a niche profession for experts.
On the other hand, if you don’t have what it takes, you can always become a Private Military Contractor.

Agree with Danny. Some PMCs like to refer to themselves as "mercenaries," but "douchebag" would probably be more fitting. Those aren't the kinds of professionals you want to be around. The US military doesn't want a bunch of yahoos running around their AOR screwing everything up, and most PMC outfits don't have the backup or QRF capability to save you if you get hit by a couple dozen fighters who know what they're doing (which means you need to be careful!!)
That said, when you find yourself working with South Africans and the like, you will run into a lot of no-shit mercs who were paid in conflict diamonds etc etc..I digress.
If you want to work for a PMC, you need military or police experience almost without exception, one notable exception being that you know someone high up who can get you a job. I wouldn't recommend that though because (a) everyone will know and (b) you'll be all insecure and act like a dummy.
I digress again.
So now that you've done a stint in the military, preferably in some special or specialized unit, think about what schools and quals might be valuable downrange and acquire them like Mario acquires coins. EMT training? CLS? Radio stuff? CQB? Get it all for your resume. Make sure you save a good chunk of money so you can send yourself through training at any number of organizations catering to PMCs. I think even through Blackwater's training cycle. From there you'll find yourself wildly marketable and assuming you're not a total spaz and with a good reputation which is (literally?!) worth its weight in gold.

Congrats! You're a mercenary already !!
Just convince someone to hire u to do mercenary work.
You'll need things like job experience to get an edge above the rest, so serving in ur native army for 5 years would be superb. If its like Indian army, you'd have an edge compared to Danish army cos you'd have MUCH more combat experience in IA. US army / Marines is the best place for Merc experience.
Being multi lingual, especially in French, would give u a big boost given most conflicts ***that pay big bucks*** happen in the Francophone world.
But to realistically get noticed and approached for jobs, its good to network in the relevant field. It's a good idea to know a contractor for a company like DeBeers.
Karl von Wolff Former Commanding Officer at United States Navy (USN) (1998–2013)

In the modern age, these people are most often employed by private security companies who hold contracts with government agencies. The most well known of these was “Blackwater Security” (now known as “Academi”) which provided contracted security forces to the U.S. government in Iraq.
On the opposite side of the spectrum, the “Wagner Group” is a Russian paramilitary security firm that provides various services to the highest bidder, most often the Russian government itself (although the Kremlin frequently denies this).
The people who comprise the manpower of these various groups are often special forces operators in the national militaries which now contract them to do the same type of missions. Former Navy Seals, Green Berets, and ex-Spetsnaz are prime candidates for recruitment into these organizations.

If you mean Private Military Contractors, I would advise applying to one of the companies from your country. they aren't top secret, they do have websites you know! but it isn't any use unless you've served in the armed forces, preferably in the special forces, with a good conduct record. there are much more comprehensive guides than this, but please feel free to inbox me if you need more help.

Your best bet is to start by volunteering for military service in a regular army that you are eligible for. Ideally you manage to get in to some sort of special forces, and ideally you get deployed to a war and get combat experience. If you do all this, you will probably have enough relevant experience to get hired into a mercenary company - formally, “private military contractor” (PMC) - like the Russian Wagner Group or the American Academi (formerly Blackwater).
As of early to mid 2022, If you are a military veteran but don’t have combat experience, you could consider volunteering for the Ukraine foreign legion to get the combat experience. They prefer people with combat experience, but might take people with military experience but no combat experience.

First, some sort of high level military training is required. This suggests a tour in a national military along with special forces experience such as US Navy Seals, Delta Force or others.
Armed with that experience, there are organizations that have a handle on where mercenaries, for hire, are "needed."
