Waste. I’ve never been anywhere where people seemed to care so little about their immediate environment, about cleanliness.
I have three young children. A lot of the time, when they hold something and don’t want it anymore, they simply let it fall from their hands without a thought. Slowly, they are learning that there are waste bins for that. They are learning that if everyone threw the waste down on the floor, our environment would become dirty, unpleasant, almost unliveable.
When we visited India recently, my eldest son, who was born there, asked me, “Why is it so dirty here?”
I said, “Because people don’t throw things in the bin.”
“Why?” he said.
“I don’t know. Maybe because they don’t care enough…?”
He thought for a moment, “But why wouldn’t they care enough?” he said. “They’re the ones living here….”

I don't intend to hurt the religious sentiments of anybody. I saw something which I personally found very strange and it was a shocker to me! But that's my personal opinion and I am not humiliating or making fun of any believers. If you are a hardcore Hindu who cannot stand people questioning their beliefs, you can skip this.
I saw a vlog on YouTube where the vlogger visited a temple. I guess it was somewhere in South India; perhaps Udupi. After visiting the main deity, they came out and were offered the Prasad. Everybody sat down on the ground and food/prasad was offered in front of them. The weird thing was that the prasad was not served on a plate but directly on the floor! The same floor that these people have walked on with their bare feet a few seconds ago.
I understand that it is the belief of devotees that the food isn't dirty but divine but it's basic common sense, right? We don't eat anything that falls on the ground and here, so many people have walked on that floor and still people are eating from it. The food is mixed with all the dirt and dust gathered on the floor and that is being eaten as blessings from God. I respect their beliefs but this was quite shocking for me!

You are presenting the incomplete truth. Plates are provided but some people whose wish has come true choose to eat from the floor..

Harake

Still, they're compromising their health and hygiene. That's the cultural shock.
Task Noir
Nobody forced them to do it and nobody can force anyone from not doing the same. Some ppl roll on the floor too it’s extremely bad health wise but it’s their belief like some ppl nail themselves to the cross like Jesus.

Does it mentioned anywhere in any of your holy book to harm ourselves just to please god.? Or does your God says this to you people to harm yourself so that your prayers can be heard
Pank
It's aastha, don't question them, as long as they don't force you or harm you. Further, some wierd looking things are mentioned in every holybooks where in devotee harm or test themselves

Can you quote with examples in which holy book it is written and what exactly it is written.??

Bro, hinduism is not islam. It is not based on any books. People pray to god for their work to be successful and in return they offer their bhakti.
Sujal Ghorse
Hindu community combines people from different regions with different cultures, traditions. All these regions have their own deities who protect their region and people. In return people offer them goat meat, chicken and whatsoever.
You need to open your brains to understand hinduism. You will not be able to understand it from any book.
Task Noir
It’s better not to go there you know everything yet acting ignorant. Since the topic is Hinduism there is no where it’s mentioned in holy book to harm oneself. You do what you do based on your beliefs. Even eating specific food nowhere it says if you eat beef you are not Hindu or if you don’t you are Hindu. It’s just belief yes there are elements everywhere that radically impose stuff but that is almost everywhere civilized ppl don’t care.
Ankit Krishnankutty
Hinduism is not a scxture-based religion; each person can have his/her own set of beliefs regarding the ,divine and each person can have his/her own journey towards the devine.
It might be more appropriate to ask such questions to a Muslim or a Christian, they will quote the exact verse, sentence and paragraph.

Poonam Joshi
Its better than to kill or explode others chanting alla-hoo-akbar in order to make their wish of 72 hoors come true!

Why do you care? It’s their wish!

Pedophile followers do not have a say in this.
Aswad Sayed
That means you do not have a say in this after what Ram did to 6 year old Seeta, what Krishna did to 8 year old Rukmani, after Lakshman forced on 3 year old Urmilla, and let's forget bramma lusting over his own daughter Saraswati or even Krishna and forcing himself on his own cousin Mitravinda, wow such hypocrisy. Go read manusmriti pundit while you at it.
Sharanya Narayanan
What are people so obsessed with manusmriti I don't know
Because literally no one reads or cares about it
We are not expected to follow it

Does that matter to what he said? Either way it is shocking to know people would eat from the floor they and hundreds of others have just waked on.
Ananthapadmanabhan Raghavendran
No. It is not in a place where eveyone walks. Food is eaten from a paved stone which is cleaned with loads of water before food is served. It usually is in the service hall where annadanam happens.
Nirman More
That’s a much better response. You clarified the point that people do not walk on the floor on which the food is served. Other’s are simply saying that they are fulfilling their part of their vows.
Ananthapadmanabhan Raghavendran
Yes. Their answer is also correct. It is usually only people who made certain promise to their diety who do this.
However clean it is maintained, it is still not a plate so its not easy to fulfill such a vow.

Noone eats on a floor that people have walked on
You are supposed to walk in the center and the place to eat is on the sides of the path
And it is washed thoroughly

I’ve been in India for one-and-half month in 2016, was mainly in Ahmedabad (Gujarat) but had a tour around few states. It is difficult to pick out just one thing as a cultural shock. But these are some of the things that surprised me:
The variety of vegetarian food. Very tasty, colorful, and aromatic…my mouth is watering now..hehe
Very few female waitresses. Where I live in the vast majority of waitresses in cafes, restaurants, bars, hotels are female. But in all the restaurants/hotels I’ve been to in India almost all are male.
Highly sociable & welcoming people. Everywhere I go there, it feels like home. Indians accept foreigners just as their own.Am not sure why this is the case; it may be due to the diversity of Indians themselves. This comes as quite a contrast from the behavior of Indian expats here who hang out mostly with their fellow citizens only.
Thankful, humble people. I noted that most people are happy about their life irrespective of their economic status. I saw that warm smiles even on poor people on the streets.
Driving on the left. In Ethiopia, the left side of the road is for pedestrians. and the right side is for motor vehicles. It is the opposite in India…I think is same is true for most countries with historical influence of the British. I once escaped narrowly from being crushed by a car while crossing the road after checking that no car was coming from my left side.
Very beautiful and old architecture, especially castles and temples…I just don’t have the capability to express how I am impressed by the beauty of the ancient castles and temples, especially how Indians master to manipulate marble. I was lucky to see Amer Fort and Hawa Mahal in Jaipur, Mehangarh Fort, Blue City, and Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur , City Palace in Udaipur, Dilwara Jain Temples in Mount Abu (here you see miraculous art work on marbles…loveeeeeeeeed it!!!), Swaminarayan Akshardam in Gandhinagar, the Taj Mahal in Agra….all are extremely beautiful

I visited India last week. I crammed a lot into eight days - I spent time in Agra, New Delhi, Bengaluru, and Mumbai.
The thing that hit me the hardest was the sheer disregard every person and animal displayed for their well-being.
I saw people walk across roads, barely checking for traffic, stopping between two lanes of freely-flowing traffic, and pulling manoeuvres that would, in the UK, invite a barrage of comments that can be summed up as “Are you trying to fucking kill yourself?!”
And the animals? Man, Indian dogs and cows don’t have a shit left to give. I saw a cow walking between two lanes of traffic doing about seventy kilometres-per-hour. I saw a pack of stray dogs lazing about in the road. I saw six or seven cows sat doing the same, closing one of the road’s three lanes down.
But I don’t want anyone to think I didn’t love every second I spent in India; I had the time of my life, and I’ve already drawn a list up of things I want to do and see when I go back.
I took this photo while I waited for a gap in the traffic before deciding I’d just have to run across and hope for the best.
This one depicts eight or so guys clambering into the back of moving lorry. I was shocked. And impressed. And a little confused as to whether or not the truck’s driver knew he had passengers.

As a citizen from a Southeast Asian country, India is full of surprises:
Positive side of India:
Delhi subway system, wow, I didn’t expected it. It felt like it was 5th floors below the ground.
Some Kashmiris and Punjabis look like Bollywood stars.
Bus ride with free water, blanket and a movie screen, wow!
Friendly / Kind people encountered - Nagaland, Kashmiri, Rajasthani, Delhi, Tibetan-Himachali
Politics aside, Kashmir is truly a paradise
Toilet seat with cleaning water jet on cheap hostel in Agra
I fell in love with the countryside view of Punjab
Rajasthan state is very lovely, palaces in the desert, temples.
Modern Airports in Kolkata, Delhi and Hyderabad
Crows and fair-haired monkeys I only see in National Geographic
I did not see slum areas or very poor people lol, at least in North India
Negative side of India:
Delhi girls are liberal with Delhi boys but cold-hearted, barely smiles and talk to foreign strangers like me
There were too many dogs, these are large dogs roaming around marketplaces and streets. Though they don’t look dangerous/agressive, just scavenging for food on the rubbish tin. I was expecting to see cows but rarely seen them.
Kolkata - this city is full of historical places but has the worst traffic jam in India. Beggars and homeless people lined up on the streets.
Rude people encountered - Punjabi, Delhi, Bengali
Shocking stone pelting people encountered in Kashmir
Indigo Air flight was the worst. People are spitting everywhere, stewardess barely smiles due to rowdy passengers, people standing on the center aisles checking out their luggages.
Delhi belly is real, though in my case I call it Srinagar belly lol!
Neutral view of India:
Dirt and garbage is tolerable. I have seen worse in other places/countries.
Hyderabad is surprisingly looks like a mini-Arabian city with lots of burqa clad women while Kashmir though muslim majority, women wears colorful and less extreme hijabs.
I will add some more soon.
