It's difficult to generalize because the US is so freaking big and there is variation between regions, rural vs. urban. etc. But, in general, we have very safe tap water. There are exceptions, but they are localized. You can find information about local water quality via the EPA, the USGS, or the CDC, among other sources.
For Texas specifically, this looks like your best bet for local information.
Many brands of bottled water are straight from the tap and sold at a massive markup. Spring water is...well...from a spring but not every brand that has "spring" in their name is spring water.

Well, Flint aside, there's a difference between "drinkable" and "water you want to drink".
My parents bought a vacation condo in Florida. The water was totally safe to drink - no heavy metals or parasites, or anything like that. But it tasted pretty bad. Most grocery stores in the area had not one, but two of those 5-gallon water vending machines, 'cos someone was always using one of them.
For the record, our washing machine was a front-loader, and by the end of every summer Mom would have to scrape all the lime (scale? calcium?) off the inside of the washer window, because it was completely opaque.

Drinkable v. Palatable. The treated water that comes out of wastewater plants is drinkable, yes, but you would have to be on the verge of death to want to drink it. Also a lot of rural people are on wells so not much/any regulations.

Look into what chemicals factories near you use. For example fluorinated carbon is often used in manufacturing and that gets dumped into drinking water. Because there are so many types not all of them have been proven to be harmful, especially in your state. Regulations are lax because of it.

They used to have a spring in Poland, Maine. That's where they got the water from. It dried up years ago. They get that "spring" water right from the tap now.
There's another brand of water bottled in Greenwood, Indiana that also comes right from the tap. It's brand is Pure Life.
Both of these brands are owned by Nestlé, which has a terrible corporate reputation. These bottled water companies are destroying our environment and our public drinking sources.
Yes there are some municipalities that don't have good drinking water, but most have decent water.

You are right that Flfor the most part their water comes from private drilled wells or municipal sources that are drawing from the same aquifer as a natural spring so they are legally allowed to call them spring water, even though in many cases is the same exact water they comes out of the tap. You’re not legally allowed to bottle spring water that makes it to the surface due to possible contamination— you need to drill a well to tap the source of the spring.

There is an absolute FUCK ton of information available about the safety of tap water in the US, also about the safety of the chemicals used to treat water here. It depends where in the United States you're talking about. Pretty sure everyone by now has heard what happened in Flint at least once. They're not the only place that has service pipes made of lead. Even in certain parts of Pittsburgh there are still boil water advisory warnings. Whichever treatment plant connects to the town usually has a report indicating what's in the water.

So utilities companies claim that lead pipes are safe, due to years of mineral buildup. I don’t see why this wouldn’t be mostly true. If you ever seen the inside of any kind of pipe that’s been used for decades, there’s a thick layer of buildup. It’s kind of gross looking, but it’s also harmless.
Only issue is, if the water chemistry changes and those service pipes start leeching lead into the water, or if the pipes start to corrode (which they’ll need to be replaced anyway).

Chlorine at the levels it’s present in drinking water will not harm anyone and kills biological stuff to make the water safer. The US has some of the highest standards for drinking water and the enforcement is near 100%.
If you want better taste use a carbon filter, but that’s all you need. All the other terrifying shit the marketing people blather about is at such low level it will never cause an issue.

Depends on the region.
The story I remember is that at some point, in order to make a profit, companies selling bottled water started a smear campaign to make people afraid of tap water, and apparently it worked.
That led to a norm of tap water not being consumed, which in turn took away the incentive to maintain the system. So eventually completely harmless and drinkable tap became a foul undrinkable mess.
What a waste... to have non-salty water come out of your kitchen and not be able to drink it.

In the US, water quality is controlled and mandated by the Clean Water Act to be consumable if it is channeled to your house through public works. Some of it tastes strange but that's just the result of certain types of water treatment. BUT the clean water act doesn't cover private wells which a lot of more rural properties have. Fun fact: the quality of bottled water is actually controlled by the Food and Drug Administration which has lower standards than the Clean Water Act ; so in large cities with a culture of bottled water, the bottled water is in fact dirtier than the slightly odd tasting water from your tap

I wouldn't. Tap water in my area always reeks of either chlorine or fish, is sometimes so hard it looks like watered-down milk, and is also probably radioactive. New Yorkers say their water is safe, but they're all fucked as everyone else I've ever met. That might not be the water's fault though.

Then in flint Michigan the water is contaminated with lead . I now live in Arizona and we have great tap water. It really depends on what city you live in.
