America’s Big Agriculture Problem Is Getting Worse

Nitrate from fertilizer and manure befouls countless waterways and kitchen taps across the US. But unlike other big polluters, from petroleum to plastics, Big Agriculture has largely avoided responsibility for its dirty footprint. In no state is this arguably clearer than Iowa, where the multibillion-dollar corn industrial complex of farmers, food processors, tractor makers, chemical companies, ethanol producers and their lobbyists reigns supreme.

THIS. Is why i gave up on environmemtalism and a career in environmental sciences after studying it for 10 years in post secondary institutions. Every part of this is a dagger to my heart again. There is no hope when the government itself is against environmental protection and public health.

Don't worry, Trump is gutting environmental agencies and science and research grants, so you wont know how fast all these corporate profits are killing you.

This should not come as a surprise to anybody. In today's America, greed and corruption have become what makes it "exceptional".

It's funny how we never learn. I remember learning about rotating crop types to reduce agricultural run offs and increase profitability back in high school over a decade ago. It's a win win, but yet people still choose to purposely harm themselves.
@ashishpatel350
Seemed to gloss over the fact that American farmers are heavily subsidized group in the world. And they still keep on asking for more and more handouts

Use of alfalfa to increase nitrogen levels in the soil is well known. Alfalfa is also sold as animal feed. Win win for everyone, except for the fertilizer and natural gas industry
@carterwgtx
I’m tired of so many farmers pretending they grow food and we’d just starve without them. 35% of corn goes to ethanol fuel, 10% goes to industrial products, another 20+% is exported, and majority of the rest goes to animal feed. You couldn’t design an ag system less efficient at producing real calories people actually eat if you tried. We need fundamental change in our ag system.

"I would say this food production system is the envy of the world" No, it certainly is not. We in Germany but also in other European countries are happy with our more sustainable food production which might still be improved but we do not wish to import what the US wants to sell to us and calls food.

Same problem in France in Brittany, the pig farm slurry is used as fertilizer and the rain washes part of it into rivers and the ocean. Causing algea blooms that wash up on shore. Ferment and release SH gas to toxic levels.

It’s hard for me, a person from an Africa country, to believe that this is happening in a country such as the USA; this is just against common sense!
But then I read the comments section and it gets more ridiculous:
People are not discussing the facts and trying to find a solution; instead they’re blaming each other speaking about their political leaders as they were Saints.

A few years ago my husband and took a river tour down the Danube River.After just a few days of eating and drinking meals adhering to the EU regulations several of our chronic issues were gone. The tours took us to a German family farm. It was truly amazing

In the United States, corporate interests often shape environmental policies, leaving ordinary citizens to bear the financial and ecological consequences.
@whateveification
I grew up in an agriculture community and my family were ranchers that dabbled in farming (didn't grow for profit just to feed our own livestock). We went on a tour of various types of ranches around a few different countries in Europe to see how they did things. I remember they had really strict regulations in capturing animal waste and how much fertilizer could be used on a field based on size. We considered it excessive and an overreach of government. Now I'm starting to understand why they had just strict regulations.
I want to clarify though that it's not the small farms that are the problem. It's the large corporate farms that only care about profit rather than protecting the land for future generations. These large farms are driving small farms out of business and preventing the next generation from being able to make a living from farming.
@thegreatxyz
This is a similar problem that have in the Netherlands. It is one of the most problematic problems we have at the moment because of a combination of nature preservation regulations by the EU that were passed to reduce nitrate emissions. Now we are in a nitrate emission deadlock, a lot of construction projects to build homes or businesses trying to expend are stopped if there are any nitrate emissions that could end up in protected nature zones. Those nature zones are rapidly decaying, some native plans and wildlife will likely disappear from these zones. Drink water projects are becoming more expensive, housing is becoming unaffordable, farmers are being pressured to sell their farms or rapidly change.
@TruthHurts-o3j
Can't help comparing this to Australia. In 1992 the Australian government took steps to turn farms and sheep and cattle stations to become organic. The figure today is 92% and companies like Monsanto have been driven out of the market. Australia now exports organic meet and grains all over the world and crop yields are amongst the highest in the world.

Sit on a chainsaw in action and then tell which tooth has scratched you. It's not only Nitrates in the water: It is Glyphosate, PFAS, Phtalates, Hormones, Solvent vapors, Lead paint and residues, Tobacco, Alcohol, Junk Food, Antibiotics, sud particles from diesel exhaust, platicisers, NO², microplastics in the food chain, etcetc. and more to come.
For a little short-sighted profit, the multinationals have poisoned entire genarations. It will take many decades to clean up the mess, and until then: Hundreds of thousands will suffer a lot.

My brother farmed 40 acres of plums in California's San Joaquin Valley. He lived on the property, with his wife and (later) 3 kids. For years the household water that they used came from a well on the property. They drank it, cooked meals with it, and bathed in it. My brother's wife was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer, which she eventually succumbed to. Eventually he developed prostate, bladder, and colorectal cancer, one after another. He 'overcame' each one, with the aid of drugs, treatments, and major surgery, but died fairly young. I always (and still do) suspected that the well water was contaminated with a toxic brew of ag chemicals (pesticides, herbicides) present in the Valley aquifer. After watching this, I wonder if nitrates were actually the problem. Thanks for this sad, illuminating story.

The people who love Iowa and live here want regulation, even family farms, but corporate farms and law makers fight against them.
The people of Iowa want change, but we don’t have the power anymore. Corporate farms, special interests do.

I had to stop watching, it was to depressing. We have all the same problems here in New Zealand. Rivers and lakes I swam in as a child, I wouldn't put a toe in now.
@nikitavanhoose405
So what do you want the farmers to do exactly? I swear some of the woke, directionless people in this country, and in this comment section don't even understand how farming, crops, or the very food that you buy and depend on to live in your grocery stores even works, or gets there. All of these crops require nutrients and fertilizers. Many people don't realize this, but a large majority of the vegetable and fruit crops that we grow, and that you love to eat aren't even native to North America. I say that because the natural nutrient amounts in the soil aren't enough.... They're nowhere near enough. The opulation of our country and world has grown, the demand for fruits and vegetables has grown, and then direct correlation the amount of fertilizer and nutrients used has grown. Now there's a lot of liars out there, who will claim that there are fertilizers that are natural and green and safe for the environment that will do the same thing as these man-made fertilizers, but it's just not true. So if you're genuinely so worried about this issue, rather than whining and complaining about, "Mu Environment", then why don't you do something that's actually worthwhile and will actually make a difference. Start working on, and coming up with some true, effective, natural, environmentally safe fertilizers for instance. That, or just give up eating best fruit and vegetables I guess. That's your two choices until someone comes up with something.
@kcludvigson1258
I live not far from Remsen, there's different rules for farmers in this state. There's next to no laws or rules for them regarding their crooked BS & even where there is some, it never gets enforced. And they do nothing but cry about every little thing & how hard & unfair being a farmer is while living in brand new or completely remodeled houses driving brand new 100k trucks.
@Paradox-f2c
I had a conversation with a corn researcher with a major seed company a decade ago, this company had a research project with the intention to develop a corn hybrid that used less nitrogen, the researcher shared that the project was very complex genetically and after a survey of farmers questioning whether or not there would be a demand for such a hybrid (the survey revealed there would not be a demand) the project was scuttled.
The University of Wisconsin is researching a nitrogen fixing corn hybrid that would produce its own nitrogen, a nitrogen fixing corn plant was found in the tropical highlands in Southern Mexico by a Mars researcher It has been awhile since I checked the status of this project.
@georgehadley7863
We have the same problem in New Zealand. Our biggest exports are dairy products and in areas where there is intensive dairy farming the levels of nitrates in the water system is high and as a result pollting the water systems. However the dairy industry body has huge lobbying power and as a result nothing is done to rectify the problem. The industry now has a name "Dirty Dairy".
@denisdufresne5338
Why farmers are not transforming their farm in a regenerative one? Copying the way nature works is the best thing it could happen to farmers. Nature make plants grow without polluting. Besides when you know how nature make plant grow then you know how to boost the nature system to grow plant as fast and big as with chemicals. Chemical companies do not want the farmers to know that otherwise they will not make any money.
@laara1426
America, a nation of amnesiacs. So sad because the corporations who are poisoning you make serious bank when you don't remember, can't recall and forget that the land, the water and the food you eat is filled with cancer causing chemicals. Your markets are crashing. Other countries don't want the chemistry concoctions you call corn. The corporations don't care. You and your families are expendable.
@jaypatel-xz6tr
Real question why don't we change it so that we "pay farmers to use less fertilizer, not companies to sell more." If a farmer reduces nitrogen input (through cover crops, crop rotations, precision application, etc.), they get to capture the dollar value of avoided subsidies. This refrxs fertilizer savings as farmer profit, not fertilizer company revenue.
@timothysands5537
Hopefully this blows up and puts pressure on regulators to correctly focus on balancing the economics and the health of its citizens. I have family in Iowa and they said they didn't even know about this prent issue there.
I knew about the dead zone in the gulf, but I didn't realize it was the size of New Jersey.

I used to work for one of the largest Ag non-profits in the country for a dozen years. I was shocked at how many coworkers died of cancer while I was there. I'm talking about men and mostly women in their early 30s and 40s. It was a clear split between the farm kids and the rest of us from a non-ag background. Everyone who got cancer, grew up on a farm. No one I worked with who didn't grow up on a farm got cancer while I was there. This is all anecdotal, I know. But I have never seen anything like it in any other industry.

What do the cancer incident rates look like in wildlife, livestock, and pets? Yes, different genetics and environments, but useful information. Remember that the NIH budget is less than 5% of the military budget AND probably less than the new ICE budget. What impacts us?

The oil & natural gas corporations are rooted in the commercial farming industry. Fossil fuel powers the combustion engine of mechanized farming vehicles. Natural gas is synthesized under high pressure, through the Haber-Bosch process, to pull nitrogen from the air and combine it with the hydrogen found in natural gas creating the fertilizer ammonia; used to help modern Farmers grow post scarcity yields of commodity crops like corn as feed for animal meat production and bio-fuels. The primary purpose of commercial food production is to grow manufactured food crops for livestock consumption and biofuels; with little, to no, concern for equitable direct human nourishment.

Many countries around the world, who used to buy our crops are now refusing to buy because of the tariffs. However, there was already much agonizing from around the world about the quality of our food exports. This recent antagonism from the U.S. just gave them the incentive to say no more. Other markets have been found. How long will it be to regain their trust? It will not be in my lifetime.

Around 42% of the meat produced in the U.S. ends up going to waste now, yet production continues at full throttle. This cycle persists not out of necessity, but because it allows those at the top to manipulate prices, deepen inequality, and profit while the system strains under the weight of its own inefficiencies.

I feel so sorry for my US friends fed on a diet of overpriced, oversized, under nutrient-rich "food-ish product", it's the inevitable result of big bigger biggest mentality. Real food should be overflowing from the shelves in every corner of the USA. Where are the farmers? I don't see any real food in the country.

Early in this video, water affected by biota is shown as an overwhelming problem. But, this is not a location where I reside, a bay environment where water is piped in. I wish there was a way to include this concern -- affected water supplies in conflict with crops -- in the agenda I must examine each day.
