The United States is a society built around the automobile. If cars aren’t affordable, we need to make sure that public transportation is safe, fast, affordable, and reliable. At the current moment, owning a car is both a luxury and a necessity for American society. That doesn’t make any sense to me and that looks like a bubble that will burst.

The wealth gap in our country is really starting to get concerning. Maybe the Auto Manufacturers will start paying attention to the lower priced (and features) vehicles down the road. Might be lower margins for them but they can move some additional volume targeting this segment, especially below $25k. Solid research CNBC.

When we became empty nesters and downsized, we gave our son our 2015 Kia Sorento. He does all the basic maintenance himself, if he needs tires he goes to Costco, and for major work he has an honest mechanic three miles away. And even when the work is extensive, parts are easy to find and relatively cheap. It’s not a hard formula: get a solid, reliable pre-COVID vehicle and take care of it. Don’t play this ridiculous game just to keep up with people who don’t give a damn about you.

Our household income is almost $200k and we own a single car: a base model 2017 Outback.
The priority isn't to waste money on overpriced cars that get us from point A to point B, but rather to maintain our paid off house/car and invest the excess for early retirement so that we can own our time and not be slave to a lender.

I bought a brand new chevy suv in 2014. All in I was like $35k and it had all the bells and whistles.
At that time I was nervous and worried I did something silly.
It runs perfect still, and I can't even get anywhere near the same amount of car today for that price.
It would cost be 2x to get the same amount of car.
I recoil at the idea of a new car - and I have more than enough money to buy a brand new car - I just can't stomach it.

People have wised up and realized used cars especially ones from the 2000s are far more reliable, cheaper, and easier to maintain than new cars despite potentially having to pay out of pocket for everything. But even then, it's cheap to fix.

I'm a blue collar worker, never made over $95K/yr my entire life. Own a million dollar home, mortgage free. Bought it in the 2000's. Paid the mortgage off in 16 years by allocating more than half of my income towards principal. Been driving the same car for the last 17 years. Moral of the history, car payments will keep you poor, use that money to invest in high yield accounts, you will get at least 4%-5.5% interest every year.

It's not just auto companies that are catering to just the wealthy! In Nevada the casinos are catering to the big spenders from international countries like Dubai and China and abandoning the locals and the "average" US citizen in favor of the 10% of the wealthiest individuals.

What is concerning is that American Average incomes is $39K and the house hold income is around $78K That isn't enough to pay a mortgage.

I'm technically part of the rich category of people in this video, but I love my Honda hybrid. Cheap to buy, cheap to fuel, cheap to maintain. I drove my last one for 10 years before giving it to my sister, and I'll probably drive this one for at least 10 years too. If you offered to swap it for a porsche or BMW, the only reason I'd say yes is to sell that expensive car and buy another Honda hybrid.

Not sure about the situation across all states here, however there might be parallels to this phenomena from other countries. Cars are usually the second most expensive thing to buy after a house. If buying a house becomes unaffordable, unachievable, then those folks may prefer to burn through their cash (buy in expensive consumables; from cars to avocado toasts) instead of saving for a downpayment. Adding to this, all that FOMO none-sense, making cars more about tech than mobility, normalizing disposable tech (e.g. phones needing to be replaced every few years); this becomes inevitable. I truly believe personal finance principles should be taught at high school level to create better informed consumers.

So pretty much what they're saying is that automakers realized that they could make less cars for more money & make the same or close to the same amount in profit because making cheaper cars was too much of a headache thus making cars across the board more expensive & with costs of living raising with stagnant salaries making matters worse for the average joe.

Because it’s becoming an economy that only works for the rich. That’s not a “healthy” economy if middling incomes are priced out.
Also, I’d say that people who purchased in 2025 did so early trying to grab something before tariffs hit.
And I think the car industry is going to see a decline. I don’t see a lot of people who are cycling through cars right now. It just doesn’t make sense in the current climate. So anything rolling on the lot now will likely sit longer.

We don’t have a housing shortage. We have a population that wants or needs to live where minimal housing exists. There are millions of empty homes in parts of the country have seen the decline in manufacturing. With gutting of Medicaid and rural hospitals you will see further housing weakness in those areas.

I think why high end cars have been selling in the first half of 2025 is that the high income/high net worth group is buying out of fear of upcoming tariffs, and to get in and buy a new vehicle before tariffs go into place,. I suspect the high end sales will sharply decline in another 6 months to a year.

If this is true, it's a great news for sensible people. In the next 3 to 5 years from now there will be lots of used luxury cars enter the market. Most of which will have take major depreciation. Save your money now, and purchase these used car in thr next 3 to 5 years, when these cars are still in good shape with more reasonable prices.

New and used car prices are increasing at an unsustainable rate, but not only this, because the cost of cars are going up its muting rising repo rates. Banks dont care about repos if they can resell the repos for even more money then the original loan. This is just a massive hot potato bubble of how long the American public can stretch out their credit until mass layoffs clear the field while people are simultaneously deep into burrito debt. When everyone who is driving a 90k g82 bmw m4 is a person under 40 making less than 70k, something is up.

I wouldn’t bet on the rich keeping the market propped up forever. What happens when all the rich people stop buying new cars? Well, in size-able volumes. Sure, sales were up, but I think that was driven by tariff scares. Eventually the lower priced buyers will be the largest group of car buyers. Manufacturers who have options for these buyers will be the ones with sales volume.

I recently bought a new small crossover for less than $14000 after all fees and taxes, a 2025 Chery Tiggo 2 Pro which is about the same size as a Nissan Kicks or Chevrolet Trax. So glad I left the US, now I can keep more of my money instead of being forced to buy overpriced cars.

Wealth compounds. A career professional could drive a sh!tbox in their 20s and save most of what they make and they can comfortably afford a $40k to $50k car in their 30s, $60k to $70k car in their 40s, and approach 6-figure territory in their 50s and beyond. On the other hand, if you're still flipping burgers in your 30s and pushing carts in your 40s then anything above $20k would be seen forever out of reach.

According to a recent news article, people who are in the top 10-20% income bracket do 75% of the spending, whereas people in the bottom 80% income range spend only 25% on goods, services etc.
This is why inflation and prices will continue to remain high or increase further, because these private corporations, car companies etc. need to show unlimited growth and infinite profit to their investors, share holders etc. every quarter and year over year.
Anyone who believes car prices will crash or come down is gullible. The car dealerships, car manufacturers (especially the big ones) are doing just fine. There are enough high networth customers to buy their products, these car dealers/companies don’t need the average people (the majority) to float their boat anymore

This is such a half-assed report. Completely ignores cars lasting longer, a huge used car market that props up the lease market, and the value lost immediately after driving a new car off the lot. Low to mid income people would rather buy a used car with features for $25k than a new barebones compact car, and the car is lasting much longer than ever before. Also, why am I going to pay insane interest with all the fed rate hikes for an asset that depreciates like crazy? It does not make financial sense for more than half of America to buy a new car given the massive quality used car supply.

To me, this just means that the rich people become the used car salesman. I've saved & purchased 10 cars over the years & all were used private sale. Each owner was very happy to sell me (Average Joe) their well taken care of car as long as it was going to a good home. I've never had payments & never got a bad car.. but I am familiar with investigating & buying cars.

Cars in Ireland cost 37 to 40% more than America. I usually like to buy my car outright instead of borrowing but it's getting more and more difficult to save up enough to buy a pretty modest car like a Corolla. 2nd hand car prices are gone through the roof since Brexit also.

the problem with the auto industry is that we are solely dependent on personal transportation since there's so much distance between where you want to go vs where you are
public transportation is no where near developed to compete and if auto industry tanks then we have multi trillion infrastructure that is SOL
