Why Tariffs Won’t Bring Back Manufacturing Jobs, Krugman Explains

Nobel laureate Paul Krugman argues that tariff “chaos” and Trump's immigration policies are the real drag on growth by raising costs, freezing investment, and ultimately hitting consumers. He says a 1950s-style manufacturing revival is illusory, tariff revenue won’t fix the deficit, and U.S. trade-rule credibility has suffered lasting damage. On New York City politics, he expects only marginal policy shifts if Democratic nominee for mayor Zohran Mamdani wins.

Arresting then roughing up 400+ highly trained engineers from a foreign county who were building factories in US probably isn't the way to bring manufacturing back to USA.

Electing an idiot to the highest office in the land is always a very bad sign. Especially when you did it once already.

Trump has done the amazing - the decoupling of the entire world from the USA.

The forest was shrinking, but the trees continued to vote for the axe. For the axe was clever and convinced the trees that, because its handle was made of wood, it was one of them.

Unfortunately as we are seeing with Canada, Brazil and India they are moving to isolate the US economically. Once trump is gone it will take decades to undo the harm.

It’s getting tiresome to listen to endless experts explain what is going wrong with Trumps administration. It is patently obvious to just about everyone else in the world that America is sliding into a pit that will take decades to rise out of. No one trusts America anymore, no one respects them much anymore and most importantly no one is investing long term anymore. How is he getting away with it!
@mildlyAnnoyed123
Trump’s policies are disastrous, but the fact that he was elected twice and still has the backing of over 40% of Americans is an indictment of the nation itself. America feels broken—and dangerously so.

This started with Reagan. The Reaganites realized they lost the domestic propaganda war that was essential to winning in Vietnam, because of educated Americans' protests. So they started the long process of denying proper public education, and increasing the public propaganda campaign in its' place.

Factory capacities are not there anymore. Factories, equipments, skilled industrial labor, supply chains ... those things have been diminishing for decades. Price alone won't play magic to bring them back.

Why nobody stands up against this adminstration violating what they build up in almost 1 century as the professor mentioned..?
@nancy4366
Tariffs won't bring back manufacturing because manufacturing requires many many different components to any one product and those components come from all over the world and tariffs are shutting down the suppliers for all the components that we would need to manufacture these products. Also Americans aren't going to work for his cheap as overseas so it would cost companies too much money to manufacture these items and products right here in the usa. Also Americans don't want manufacturer type jobs without unx and without Healthcare and without job security. That's why
@ScottyTBoner
I lived in China for over a decade. And I lived in Canton where most of the manufacturing takes place. I hated living there because the air pollution made me sick. I rarely saw a blue sky. Driving at night, it looks like you’re driving through fog. And there was always this sort of rotten egg smell in the air. If we want to bring that to the US for the sake of owning the rest of the world, I’m not for it. And I don’t think Americans will do that kind of work as it is.
@ramospk
The thing about raising tariffs to reduce our budget deficit is that Trump blew up the deficit by granting huge tax breaks to the rich. Now, everybody that buys a T-shirt is helping Trump pay off that portion of the deficit. Where is that fair?
@geoffhead111
americans play a very stupid game with the 'socialist' label. socialism informs many functions of our society. you like a good wage? youre a socialist. you like workplace safety? youre a socialist. you think unxs protect us from rapacious bosses? youre a socialist. etc. socialists have been informing economic, legal and social philosophies since 1840
@rickciaburri2598
Tariffs are simply increasing taxes on regular consumers, and protecting the fortunes of billionaires by reducing their tax obligations . The end user pays for everything.

We have not even concluded his first year and this is already a mess! I can't imagine what other horrible things can happen within the rest of his term.
@aperson5062
As someone with a degree in economics, Trump policy is terrible. It is lowering the standard of living by raising the cost of goods. At the same time, it is ruining our export market for the products we do export as they are boycotted in retaliation. The lost of trust in the USA as a dependable partner is causing Canada, our closest friend to buy new fighter jets from Europe because they can't trust America not to hold parts hostage. This is not a short term dispute, this is long term reputational damage as well as economic damage.
@geohhoeg8630
63% of working PHDs in medicine and engineering are immigrants. Not complimentary. That makes it so that we don’t tax enough to pay for a good educational system and companies still get cheap high skill labor.
@gautamganguli1221
Cheap and abundant labor,mostly imported(think slavery in US) has always been a cornerstone of advanced civilizations.Till a year back US had cheap gadgets from China,cheap farm workers from Mexico and cheap IT workers from India. Trump saw the long term danger in this for US- but tried to force his model(seriously flawed) on the world. He- and his supporters- are realizing the serious limits to US power- and US consumers will pay.
@LautrectheGuilty
I mean in the US the law counts for nothing now so, you'd have to be nuts to be looking to America as a reliable partner again. We might work with them for now because of momentum but are absolutely seeking viable alternatives.
@sbjchef
American warlord capitalism wouldn't work without a poor underclass working to survive, read your own history, indentured servitude, slavery, share cropping, convict labour and poor immigrants, so who is next? because without the gross input of this labour the underlying engine of growth will collapse, innovators and entrepreneurs require that labour pool to service the people who run their enterprises and create the innovations.
@xsliquidity
The purpose of tarrifs is to make foreign goods more expensive in order to discourage buying them. It encourages buying domestic goods, which require domestic jobs to produce. It increases economic growth in the domestic economy.
@disco7128
Nothing pisses me off more than listening to Donald Trump brag about how much money he's robbed from us and our families. News flash: that money don't just come out of thin air. You are bleeding the people of your nation, dry and for what? What is he going to do with the tariff money? Cut more social programs? On our way to laissez faire capitalism where all of the social contracts with the government and the people are broken and everything becomes violent. The more they make, the less we make, this is just not sustainable. It's bound to go up in a blaze of Glory at some point and there's a whole lot of us and a very small amount of them.
@rgrifferon
Americans can’t compete with the labor cost of other countries, it’s an impossibility. Those tariffs are taxes on the things we purchase, stop being stupid.
@DerekDAngel
American manufacturing will NEVER compete against foreign manufacturing when our competition has less regulation, taxation, oversight, and restriction to raw materials.
We’re reducing domestic manufacturing by using tariffs & sanctions to isolate ourselves from international free trade & the global market. If you start a business in the U.S, you’re closed in on by parasitic “vulture” policies designed to restrict your ability to produce product at an efficient and profitable rate.
@ericwhite5333
One obvious point I never hear regarding the claim foreign companies will drop prices to cover the tariffs. For this to be plausible, one has to accept as a given that major corporate US purchasing departments have been ineffective at negotiating the lowest possible prices for wholesale imported goods.
Let that sink in; Walmart, GM, Home Depot etc can’t effectively negotiate the lowest prices. Sure.
@stefanr5430
Trust in the US is being broken down in months. It'll take years to restore that.
And even now many americans think they're in the best country that ever was or will be...
@Anonymous-ic3db
Just say the real reason. Wall Street sold the American Dream to China, got used to the shareholder-value subscxtion industries that followed, and have absolutely NO desire to bring back the American middle class. These people sold us out, broke the law, and they got away with it for nearly 50 years.
@960john
That's an insult to Denmark. And Krugman knows very well tariffs aren't the same as VAT tax. Tariffs also work as a subsidy for local companies relative to foreign exporters, distorting the value chain. VAT tax is neutral in that sense, it only discourages consumption.
@FeebleAntelope
Aside from the ineffectiveness, these tariffs keep getting ruled illegal.
So many things the administration keeps doing are being ruled illegal. But no one is holding them accountable.
@leemcclelland2618
Even after Trump is gone, foreign nations and companies will be wary of investing in America because they never know what creature we will elect next. We are now untrustworthy and they have real lives to protect.
@quadcom
The statement that international markets would lose trust in the US if the next president reversed course is laughable. The global markets have already lost trust because trump broke the trust that was already there. Reversing course would help correct the damage done, as the US would admit to the world that it made a massive mistake in international relations. (ps. Yes, I purposefully did not capitalize trump because I don't feel he deserves it.)
@science_and_facts_please
Tariffs are a tax on American businesses that import goods from foreign nations, collected by the U.S. government, with the revenue going to the U.S. Treasury. The cost of tariffs are passed on to the American consumer in the form of inflation. Over the past 50 years, U.S. corporations (including Trump corporate entities) have outsourced production to countries with lower labor costs. As a result, the U.S. now has limited manufacturing ability and increased dependence on foreign supply chains.
@Dave-zl2ky
Bringing back manufacturing is a slow cooperative endeavor that requires a win-win for both parties. Biden had some successes in that area. Trump will be a big loser in that area by the end of four years. Trump tariffs for my company mean customers don't buy. That is 15-18% of revenue. My prices have not changed. The hostile rhetoric, especially toward Canada, has changed.
@robertboudreau5956
Tarifs are taxes. If prices go up consumers will turn to cheaper alternatives or simply pull out from buying. Higher prices, higher inflation, possibly with less jobs opportunities. If organization fell the pinch they will probably not only alt recruiting but will start reducing their labor. These tarifs are not the solutions to bring jobs back in America.
@1lwtcasl
The US government since January 2025 is unreliable, undependable and untrustworthy. This reflects trump's reputation as a NYC businessman. Like the 6 businesses of his that he bankrupted and the failed university and foundation that were forced to close due to unethical business practices, trump is now bankrupting the US. He is doing what he knows: break things and create chaos. The GOP and his supporters fully embrace this in every way they can. Now we all live with the consequences.

Trump and his tariffs are a cancer on America. We live in an interconnected world and his ignorance and insistence on pursuing this policy is destructive to the country. But all that aside, the founders did not give the president that authority and for good reason. They did not want that power in the hands of one man opening him up to corruption and cronyism. They saw Trump before he existed.
@Mtnmanmike62
I've been in manufacturing for most of my life. We have lost most of our trained manufacturing talent over the last twenty years. Specifically, tool and die makers. These people are the backbone of manufacturing. They also take years to become proficient. We cannot get them back very quickly. If we want to bring back manufacturing in the USA, we need an aggressive push for trade schools, where people can learn the prerequisite skills to make accurate goods. In short, we kinda have to go through the process of building our country up, in very short order.
Also, there's the investment in new equipment that matches the times. That costs billions of dollars. Who would want to pony up that kind of money with an untrustworthy president. Nobody knows what he will do next except for him. Investing in a new automated plant at this time could prove to be very risky. I don't see our government creating any incentive programs, so you can be assured that it will not get done. So the end result will be a collapse of our economy, all because a bunch of suits who don't know a thing about manufacturing are in control of it. Strap on your helmets!

@guru47pi
It is infuriating how often it needs to be repeated that raising the cost of things by adding a direct tax increases the cost of things. It's mind boggling to me that anyone would believe that a plan based on tariffs would reduce the cost of living.

The most important thing that he said was about trust . The world does not TRUST the USA .

@jackieYang-u6q
It's not the first time they've done this — again trying to shift the crisis onto others. The U.S. Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930 not only failed to save the American economy, but also triggered a global tariff war, severely damaged world trade, deepened the Great Depression, and laid the groundwork for the turmoil preceding World War II.
